Habitat for Humanity in the Roanoke Valley
Spring 2014
Thank you to our
Platinum Hammer Sponsors
Habitat for Humanity depends on partnerships with
corporate sponsors to achieve the vision of a world
where everyone has a decent place to live. Thanks to
the full sponsorship of Roanoke College, Thrivent
Financial and LeClair Ryan, three families will achieve
the dream of homeownership in 2014. Corporate
sponsorship programs are available at the Platinum
level ($50,000 or more), Gold level ($25,000), Silver
level ($12,500) and Bronze level ($7,500). Through the
sponsorship program, corporations benefit from
volunteer and team building experiences on the
worksite with the homeowner families, marketing
through signage onsite and on the website and
contributing to the growth of the community one
house at a time.
Spring Has Sprung
After a long, cold winter we are thankful that
spring is here. Spring is one of our favorite
seasons at Habitat for Humanity in the
Roanoke Valley because the weather lends itself
to productivity. Thank you to all of our
volunteers who help on build sites and in the
ReStore, rain or shine. Habitat’s success is
possible due to the dedication of each and
every volunteer and we are grateful for your
help. If you would like to partner with Habitat
as

Spotlight: Jim McCarthy
Jim McCarthy is a seasoned veteran when it comes to
building homes for those in need. In fact, he has been
building homes with Habitat’s Builder’s Club for
seventeen years and also plays an instrumental role
in the Blue Ridge Chapter of Thrivent Financial.
McCarthy’s involvement with Habitat began when
his friend invited him to the worksite. McCarthy
found an immediate connection with the Habitat
volunteers and mission. Now he works year round
on homes with Habitat.

Welcome Home
In 2013, Habitat for Humanity
partnered with families to complete
9 homes in the Roanoke Valley.
Since January 2014, HFHV has
celebrated the dedication of two
homes and currently has four
homes under construction.
Habitat assesses families based on need for better
housing, ability to repay the mortgage loan and
willingness to partner with Habitat in its mission of
improving both lives and communities. We build for
the size and particular requirements of the family
who will purchase the house, and have provided 6
accessible houses for family members with special
needs.
Our next dedication will be May 3 for Delbria and her
two children, ages 14 and 4. Delbria’s home will
provide a safe place for her children to grow and
enjoy reading, drawing and playing outside. When
asked about her experience working with Habitat for
Humanity, Delbria shared, “We are excited and
happy to be approved and a part of this wonderful
opportunity, amongst people who care about me and
my family.”
Thrivent Financial developed a partnership with
Habitat for Humanity in 2005. As a result, Thrivent
Financial has sponsored 9 homes with Habitat for
Humanity in the Roanoke Valley. Currently,
Thrivent’s contributions to Habitat for Humanity
International have surpassed $180 million and more
than 2,900 homes have been built throughout the
United States.
“Nine years ago we got it,” McCarthy recalls about
the funding that Habitat for Humanity in the
Roanoke Valley received from Thrivent Financial.
McCarthy helps to facilitate the ten Lutheran
Churches to volunteer and provide lunches at the
worksite. He states, “We are grateful that this year
Habitat for Humanity in the Roanoke Valley is the
only one in the state of Virginia to receive funding
from Thrivent. What keeps us in good standing is
that all ten churches continue to participate every
year.”
As a dedicated member of the Habitat Builder’s Club,
McCarthy invites everyone to build, no matter your
skill level. “Come out and volunteer. You’ll get
hooked, like I did.”
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, Christian
housing ministry partnering with families to build
homes, community and hope.

“What brings you to Habitat?”
We want to give a big thank you to our friends at Firefli Media
who are in the process of designing our new website. The website
is designed to be user friendly and highly informative. We hope
that you will be able to utilize many of its features such as the
events calendar, volunteer page and the donation links.
Building Green Houses
Through our partnerships with Energy Star and
Earthcraft, we constructed 6 certified homes in 2013.
This is equivalent to eliminating emissions from 2
vehicles on the road, saving 10,890 lbs. of coal,
planting 8 acres of trees and saving homeowners
$1,800 on utility bills. The partnership promotes our
commitment to the community by building houses
that save energy and help to protect our environment
one home at a time.
