Reflexive pronoun 之運用:
1. When the subject and object of a sentence refer to the same person or thing, we use a reflexive
pronoun as the object rather than a personal pernoun.
e.g. He bought himself a new tie. (‘He’ and ‘himself’ refer to the same person)
VS He bought him a new tie. (‘He’ and ‘him’ refer to different people)
2. To avoid saying whether the subject is male or female, ‘themselves’ or ‘themself’ can be used to
refer to the subject of the sentence.
e.g. It is a situation that no doctor wants to find themselves/themself in.
3. Reflexive pronoun can be for emphasis.
e.g. She made the cake herself. (=nobody helped her)
e.g. He got himself arrested. (= he did something to cause it) VS He got arrested.
4. “By…self” = 獨自
e.g. I go to America by myself.﹝我獨自去美國。﹞
VS I go to America myself.﹝我親自去美國。﹞
5. “of…self”有「並非安排」之意。
e.g. The light went out of itself.﹝燈自行熄滅。﹞
6. A personal pronoun, instead of reflexive pronoun, should be used after a preposition of place or
position.
e.g. She put her handbag next to her.
e.g. John had the money with him.
