Disaster Preparedness
Emergencies come in many forms, and they may require anything
from a brief absence from your home to permanent evacuation. Each
type of disaster requires different measures to keep you safe, so the
best thing you can do for yourself is to be prepared because emergency responders may be overwhelmed and unable to assist for days
and/or even weeks.
Your preparation does not need to be all at once or expensive, but
you need to at least begin. Set a goal to create a kit and add just
one thing a month.
Start with having a backpack or carry bag that you could easily take
with you in the event of evacuation. Include an extra week or two
supply of medications. As with all perishable items in the kit, rotate
them out into your normal use twice per year with the time change.
Look around your apartment for what you already have to add, but
be certain you keep the contents of your kit separate from your normal supplies. You most likely already have bottled water, snack
bars, a large plastic bag, cotton, and band aids. Place a few into a
Ziploc and toss it in. When you get about 2/3 through your roll of
toilet paper, toss that into the kit as well.
Many of the things to add could be bought at a dollar store or at yard
sales. If you never use it, then what a lucky life and it could easily
be passed down to a family member who would appreciate
having a kit themselves.
With Social Security Online Services,
You Don’t Need to Stretch the Day
It’s the summer solstice, longest day of the year. You have more time to accomplish all
the things on your to-do list. Unfortunately, you can’t say the same for the days to
follow.
With busy schedules and constant multi-tasking, it seems like everyone is juggling the
multiple chores and obligations of everyday life. That’s why Social Security created a
suite of online services.
The best way to accomplish your business with Social Security online is by creating a
personal my Social Security account. Easy, convenient and secure, a personal my Social
Security account gives you immediate access to your individual Social Security information. During your working years, you can use my Social Security to view your Social Security Statement to check your earnings record. Are you already receiving benefits? You
can use my Social Security to get a proof of benefits letter, change your address or
phone number on our records, start or change your direct deposit, and check your
benefit and payment information.
From getting the skinny on how to get a replacement Social Security card to an online
application for disability benefits, using Social Security online services allows you time
for other things. Now you can use the extra hours to go grab some ice cream and
enjoy the beautiful summer sunset.
