ST Pretest 3.1 SOLUTIONS
1. Fill in the blanks:
tundra
Aquatic Biomes
boreal forest
Temperate forest
tropical forest
Terrestrial Biomes
desert
grassland
chaparral
Marine
savannah
Freshwater
bog
Ocean
coral
estuary
Lake
river
wetland
swamp
marsh
2. What two factors determine the type of terrestrial plants that will grow in a certain region?
Temperature and amount of precipitation
3. Explain how these two factors limit chaparral to the Mediterranean, California and western Australia.
Chaparral needs high temperatures and low precipitation in the summer but rainy winters
4. What two factors, aside from temperature and turbidity, determine what kind of marine biome is possible in a certain area?
Amount of nutrients and salinity (salt concentration)
5. How does global warming affect coral biomes?
It increases the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere which dissolves in water and makes the oceans more acidic(H2CO3). It is the
pH drop that kills the sensitive algae that live among the corals.
6. Why is it important not to turn an entire lake shoreline into a beach?
The shoreline is needed to filter water and to shelter animals.
7. If a river flows into a lake, how can runoff into the river affect the lake’s vegetation?
It will carry phosphates and nitrates into the lake which will make the wrong kind of algae bloom.
8. What biome is associated with stonecrops, ground-based plants that can survive with very little moisture?
deserts
9. A)
b)
10. A)
What’s the difference between a marsh and a swamp?
A swamp has trees and shrubs. Marshes have no trees and mostly grass.
What do they have in common?
Both are wetlands.
What soil layer is not shown?
The R layer
b)
Why do roots avoid layer C but not always B?
c)
C has no useful minerals and a lot more clay; B has minerals that plants need.
If you buy topsoil at Rona, which layer does it come from?
A
d)
What do you find in the organic (O)layer?
Leaf litter and humus(pronounced “youmiss, not HUM-miss like the delicious Arab chickpea food). Humus is ripe compost.
11. 50 foxes are captured from Bif Island and are all tagged. When 40 foxes are recaptured, only 4 are tagged. What is the size of the fox
population on Bif Island?
= 40/4*50 = 500 foxes
12. Five 2m2 samples randomly chosen reveal the following counts of dandelions:
8, 12, 11 ,15, and 7. Use an average to estimate the number of dandelions in a 100m2 plot.
(8+12+11+15+7)/5 = 10.6 dandelions = avg per 2m2.
(10.6 dandelions/2m2)(100 m2 ) = 530 dandelions
