Whatever the weather, the Madonna Foundation wishes our friends and supporters a blessed Easter Season and a safe spring break for our scholars. The Community Benefits of Investing in Youth Donor’s Forum recently released a report measuring the social impact of youth development programs. The study focused on youth development programs in Illinois that offer homework help, educational field trips and outings, group volunteering, and leadership opportunities, and found that the benefits reached beyond the participating children and families to the larger community. Societal benefits include increased economic security, stronger communities, improved health, and reduced correctional system involvement. Measured as a social return on investment, this study found that for every dollar invested in the youth development sector, $45 is generated in social economic value. May is also considered the beginning of a new season and new life. Catholics often honor a statue of Mary by placing a crown of flowers on her head to indicate her virtues. How will you honor Mary in the month of May? Take time to thank some of the strong, influential women who have made a difference in your life, whether it be your mother, grandmother, aunt, teacher, or friend. Look for our online appeal in May for a chance to pay tribute to these women and help form the next generation of phenomenal women by supporting our Madonna Scholars. 2 PAGE 3 St. Xavier Field Trip Fifteen Junior year Madonna Scholars took a trip to St. Xavier University on President’s Day. Undergraduate students from the Chemistry department lead the girls through hands-on science experiments at the University’s science lab. We also listened to a panelist of women with careers in science, and students had the opportunity to ask questions about their experiences. Undergraduate student ambassadors led a tour of the campus, showing the girls campus highlights and a dormitory. The Madonna Foundation treated the Madonna Scholars and volunteers to lunch at St. Xavier’s Student Center. We attended mass with the Sisters, learned more about their heritage and the beginning of the Madonna Foundation, participated in some workshops and activities, and took time in the gardens for spiritual reflection. Thank you to the Franciscan Sisters for all of their hospitality and support. “I am so thankful to have been invited to the convent today; it really gives me a different view of religious life.” – Tiffany, Trinity High School Class of 2017 THE MADONNARY VOLUME 2, ISSUE Delia Montoya Trinity High School Class of 2015 3 Scholar Spotlight PAGE 5 The Spring 2014-2015 Madonna Scholar Spotlight is on Delia Montoya, a senior at Trinity High School. She is enrolled in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program, a globally recognized honors curriculum. She is on the school’s honor roll and is a Spanish National Honor Society member. She also served on the Track & Field Team and Spanish in Action Club. This past summer, she had the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica on a community service trip. While there, she fell in love with the business of coffee, agriculture, and global economics. Currently, Delia lives on the northwest side of Chicago with her mom, dad, and her cats. Being an animal lover, she also volunteers at her local cat shelter where she helps socialize rescued cats to help get them ready for adoption. Delia is thankful to the Madonna Foundation for giving her the financial opportunity to attend a single-gender high school. She whole-heartedly believes it has allowed her to focus on her academics and has helped her become a confident young woman. She also credits the Foundation with teaching her service and leadership through the many different events and trips available to Madonna scholars. Delia is currently waiting on her college acceptance letters, but in the meantime, she is dreaming of a future in international business, with the goal of perhaps becoming a green coffee buyer and traveling back to Costa Rica, as well as traveling the rest of the world. “The Madonna Scholarship Program has enabled me to receive a great education which is the base of a meaningful and successful life.” Foundation Contact Information Annie Ginzkey, Madonna Foundation Manager Email: [email protected] Cell:(708)269-3149 4021 W.
