EDUCATION IN FAITH:
This Sunday we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. This marks the end
of the liturgical year with Advent being the start of the year.
We pray that the commercial side of Christmas does not overshadow the
true meaning of the birth of Christ and the hope that it provides to all.
We remember in our prayers Olivia, a student from St. Peter’s in East Keilor who passed
away last week. Our sincere thoughts and prayers are with her family and the St. Peter’s school community.
Typhoon Haiyan
Thank you to our school community for their generosity in supporting those whose lives have been devastated as a result of Typhoon Haiyan. We are pleased to advise that we will be sending
$830 to Caritas to assist with their emergency work.
LEADERSHIP AND MANAGMENT:
Building Fund:
As you will be aware, St. Margaret’s school has grown steadily over the last few years,
and in 2014 we will have between 335 and 340 children enrolled across 14 classes.
The biggest problem we face is educating our children in modern classrooms. The
school has consistently applied for Capital and Supplementary Grants for new buildings, but to no avail. The response is that funds are directed to new schools in the
growth corridors! In order to build new classrooms we need to borrow funds from the
Catholic Development Fund, and we are required to repay the loan. To this end it has
been decided to instigate in 2014 a building levy of $150 per family. The school is
awaiting a council planning permit and will then borrow $700,000 for the building of a
double story building, housing four new classrooms. A building levy is the only way forward for St. Margaret’s school.
Prep Orientation:
The first Prep Orientation Morning is being held on Thursday 28th November between 9.30am-10.30am. We require some volunteers to
welcome our new families to the school, and to assist with morning tea.
Please let the office know if you are able to assist.
2
Helper Thank You Function:
All families have received an invitation to our annual “Thank you” evening. To assist
with catering would you please advise the office if your will be attending ASAP. We
look forward to thanking you for your efforts in supporting your children / grandchildren and the staff of the school. We have been lucky to secure some door prizes to
be awarded on the night.
Orientation:
On Thursday 5th December the children from Prep to Year 5 will meet their new teachers and classmates. The Prep classes for 2014 will have their orientation on Thursday
28th November and Thursday 5th December.
This week’s winners:
Ella, Natasha, Isabel, Poppy, Ava, Liam, Odessa, Chiara, Alannah,
Daniel, Jade, Sebastien, Charlotte R, Michaela and Alexia. There will
be more winners announced next week. Congratulations to our winners for keeping fit and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Thank you to
Year 6AO for coordinating this important initiative.
St. Mary’s and St. Margaret’s Parish Picnic:
Sunday 24th November from 12.30pm
To be held at St. Margaret’s
Every year the parish picnic is held on the Feast of Christ the
King. This event is paid for by the Parish and will be held in the
grounds of St. Margaret’s this Sunday. All you have to do is
bring along your own drinks and seats as the food will be provided by the Parish. Please reply to the office if you would like
to attend.

advise if your daughter will be attending.
Classes—2014:
In organising class placements for 2014 we take into consideration the intellectual, social and emotional factors that make up your children. It is a complex process which
involves all staff. If your child is not in Year 6, and you do not intend to return to St.
Margaret’s in 2014, would you please advise the office as soon as possible. We have
a number of families on our waiting list across all year levels.

Allergies:
We have a number of children at our school who have food allergies. These allergies
range from minor, through to life threatening. It is not only nuts that these children are
allergic to, we need to be cautious of all foods. To ensure we maintain a safe environment for these children it is essential that the rules listed below are followed. Also, if
your child has a friend who has food allergies try to ensure your child is educated
about this and if they have the food that causes the allergic reaction in their lunch
box that they tell their friend and teacher.



No sharing of food

More information on food allergies and their potential danger can be found at:

Lollies are not to be provided to celebrate birthdays, however water icypoles are acceptable. They should be placed in the freezer in the canteen, please remember to
collect any leftover icypoles at the end of the day.

Numeracy News – Worded Problems
Many children have great number sense and are very accurate mathematicians
when asked to solve equations. However, some have difficulty when asked to solve
worded maths problems. These require another level of understanding and processing. The more often a child deals with worded problems, the better they get at identifying which operation (+, -, x etc) they need to do with which numbers. Here are
some examples to do with your child.
1) What do I need to subtract from 22 to get 15?
2) Peter has 26 marbles. Simon has half as many. How many does Simon have?
3) A school has 84 pupils. One day 17 are away. How many are left in the school?
4) The Maths Rats had a party. Divvy ate twelve sausages, Multi ate five, Addy ate
nine and Subby ate six. How many did they eat altogether?
5) A girl cycled forty-eight kilometres before lunch and twelve kilometres after lunch.
How much did she cycle altogether? How much further did she cycle before lunch
than after lunch?
6) Peter runs eighty metres. Joanne runs one hundred and sixty metres. How much further does Joanne run than Peter?
7) Mrs Ahmed has a piece of ribbon 180m long. She cuts off a piece twenty eight
centimetres long. How much is left?
8) Mary can stay underwater for 53 seconds, Omee for 35 seconds and Joan for 42
seconds. How much is that altogether?
9) How much longer can Mary stay underwater than Omee?
10) What number is fifty three greater than one hundred and seventy?
