Pop Art - Edmonton County School

Year 8 Painting (Pop Art) Project; Autumn Term 2012
My Project is due in on .................................. (Project duration 24th September – 12th November)
My project must be presented neatly as a separate bound project (presentation is essential). Please complete the following
tasks in the correct order:
1. Title page – include: Your name and form, Project Title: ‘Pop Art’. Decorate the page with
images/sketches of Pop Art.
2. Research the work and spirit (1960s) of Pop art. Compare and
contrast the work of TWO different Pop artists, with each other
from the selection of names list below:
Julian Opie (Simple portraits/flat colour)
Claes Oldenburg (large/‘soft’ sculptures of every day objects)
Roy Lichtenstein (cartoon imagery blown up big)
Andy Warhol (prints of Campbell soup cans/famous people)
Wayne Thiebaud (paintings of cakes)
When discussing their work, make sure you include the following
(write in paragraphs and present neatly): Write a paragraph on the
background of the artist and about the Pop Art movement (in your own words), Add images of the
work (title and date) in colour, Add sketches of the artist’s work. Discuss the following about the works
of art – composition, shapes, colours, textures, patterns, line, tone etc. What do you think the artist
intended with their works of art? What do you like about the works of art? Describe the emotions these
images provoke.
3. Look at food packaging that you have at home. Make a drawing in colour of an item in the style of
Andy Warhol’s soup cans (so this means the packaging, lettering and information is drawn and
coloured neatly). You could draw the packaging of a soup can, cereal packet, or any packaging that is
colourful and stands out visually. Stick the packaging next to your drawing or take a photograph
and stick this in next to your sketch (as evidence).
4. Design a portrait in the style of Andy Warhol or Julian Opie. Use different materials such as
fabric, paint, collage, coloured pencils and use similar colours to your artist. This should fill an A4
page and should be Portrait Layout. The best portraits will be entered for The Face Britain
Portrait Project and we will try to break a Guinness World Record. The portraits will be online as
part of The Face Britain Online Gallery.
5. Communication Medium: Write a letter to your artist; your letter should include: questions
about the art works; what was their inspiration; what you like/dislike about the work. If you were
to make a similar art work, how would you do it differently?
Extension Tasks: (Optional)
Make your own 3D packaging (Andy Warhol) of food items (e.g. soup cans and other food packaging)
or a sculpture (Claes Oldenburg) of an everyday object (i.e. ice-cream, peg etc.)
6. Explain how you made your packaging or sculpture. Which Pop Artist influenced your ideas?
How successful do you think your piece is? What improvements could be made?
