Semester 1
Learning Objective #1
Students will know and understand the purpose and design of the AVID program/class. *AVID
mission statement.* AVID yearly contracts.
Target(s) to Meet Learning Objective #1
 Target 1: Students and parents will evaluate the AVID mission statement.
 Target 2: Students will know and understand that the acronym AVID stands for
Advancement Via Individual Determination
 Target 3: AVID students and parents will read, discuss, and sign the AVID contract
which establishes their commitment to the requirements and philosophies of the
AVID program.
Timeline
 Students will complete activities that address the mission of AVID within the two
weeks, but various themes that are covered in AVID will address/relate to the
mission statement.
Learning Objective #2
Students will see the binder is a tool for academic success and understand the process of
refining the academic tools in the binder.
Target(s) to Meet Learning Objective #2
 Target 1: Students and parents will have a clear understanding of the purpose and
materials necessary for an AVID binder
 Target 2: Within the first two weeks of school students will have the necessary
materials to organize their binders effectively
 Target 3: Students will become familiar with bi—weekly binder checks and work to
maintain a well—refined, transparent, and organized collection of their academic
learning

Learning Objective #3
Students will understand and use the Cornell note—taking method as a way to establish the
learning cycle and the writing—to—learn process
Target(s) to Meet Learning Objective #3
 Target 1: Students will know and understand the Cornell note—taking method
 Target 2: Students will be able to assess the strengths and weaknesses in sample
notes
 Target 3: Students will know and understand when to take notes and how to record
information through a variety of class activities.

 Notes will be evaluated during every binder check
Learning Objective #4
Students will learn how to complete a learning log as an alternative to taking notes.

 Target 1: Students will learn additional methods of retaining lecture/class
information via learning logs as part of the writing—to—learn process
 Target 2: Students will be able to assess the strengths and weaknesses in sample
notes Target 3: Students will know and understand when to take notes and how to
record information through a variety of class activities.

Learning Objective #5
Students will work to build safe classroom environments and explore ways they can take
responsibility in all classrooms to engage and be more successful.

 Target 1: Fridays will be used to promote team building and collaboration
 Target 2: All team building activities will be followed by a reflective writing/activity
to stress the lessons learned

Learning Objective #6
Students will know and understand that tutorials are collaborative learning groups, that use a
text of inquiry and a dialogue of inquiry that support students coming to an understanding of
the material.
Target(s) to Meet Learning Objective #6
 Target 1: Students will complete a pre—work Tutorial Request Form (TRF) prior to
entering the classroom on “tutorial” days.
 Target 2: Students will present their initial question, what they understand about
their question, and their point of confusion to their tutorial group.
 Target 3: Students will reflect on what they learned through presenting and
questioning to answering about their tutorial questions as well as other studnets’
questions.

Ongoing Activities:
 Mock tutorial sessions are held in week 3—4 to help students become familiar with
the tutorial format.
 Currently tutorials are held every Wednesday or Thursday, depending on what day
their AVID class falls.
Learning Objective #7
Students will identify the main concepts of AVID and WICR, writing, inquiry, collaboration, and
reading.
Target(s) to Meet Learning Objective #7
 Target 1: Quickwrites,”post—it,“ Cornell Notes, Learning Logs and other similar
activities will are introduced and used to elaborate their importance of a mastery
level of writing.
 Target 2: Group Projects, jigsaw activities, and tutorials are a few of the activities
used in the classroom to elaborate the importance of collaboration.
 Target 3: Costas’ higher level question method will elaborate on the importance of
inquiry and higher level thinking.
 Target 4: AVID students will learn critical reading strategies, such as scanning the
text, numbering the paragraphs, and text annotating in order to elaborate on the
importance of good reading strategies.

Ongoing Activities:
 The WICR strategies are discussed in detail in the 3 month of school, but the
strategies are used throughout.

Learning Objective #8
Students will prepare for post—secondary education through a variety of writing tasks:
reflective, creative, descriptive, evaluative, definitive, narrative, summary, analytical,
comparative, and cause/effect.* freshmen will do this via the Mandala project.

 Target 1: Self—discovery
 Target 2: Learning how to organize personal writing
 Target 3: Students will know the stages of the writing process, planning, pre—
writing, revising, editing, and publishing.

Learning Objective #9
Students will know and understand that developing time management skills requires them to
analyze how they spend their time, decide what their priorities are, and learn to plan ahead.

 Target 1: Students will analyze how they spend their time via Time Logs
 Target 2: Students will reflect on how time was spent and strategize ways they can
modify time use it more effectively.
Learning Objective #10
Introduce students to the Socratic method which enables students to understand that to think
for themselves is more important than filling their minds with the “right” answers.

 Target 1: Students will know and understand who Socrates was and the purpose
for the Socratic Method
 Target2: Students will complete several Socratic discussions over high interest
topics to topics they are likely discuss in core classes.

Students will create a four (six) year plan that where they track their progression toward four—
year college readiness.

of study for the next four years.
