SRC Graduates Remember Classmate, Teacher
By ELLEN EMERY
FORT COVINGTON - Graduation ceremonies at Salmon River
Central were both solemn and
joyful as classmates remembered
a former classmate and teacher
before celebrating their own
achievements.
One hundred-four members of
the Class of 1988 at Salmon River
Central School received their
diplomas at graduation ceremonies
|jeld in the school arena Friday
'evening.
; Senior Class President Daniel
Salgado said he had planned to
make his welcoming address
"humorous-filled with puns and
jokes," but he explained with the
loss of "two close members of our
school" this year, he chose to open
the ceremony with "a moment of
contemplation" in memory of
music instructor Lyle Crofoot and
fellow classmate Raymond Tuper,
who had been killed in a car accident only a few weeks before"
graduation.
"We lost two very close members
Of our school; Mr. Lyle Crofoot, a
distinguished and well respected
m e m b e r of our t e a c h i n g
staff...whose musical and teaching
abilites-will be missed,..and Raymond Tuper a friend and member
of our senior class...whose friendship and smile warmed our
hearts."
"With remembrances concluded
in silence, Class President Salgado
stated to jubilant cheers and
shoots, "Let the festivities begin.
DANIEL SALGADO
Aaa-ru-ba!"
The instrumental arrangement,
p r e s e n t e d by senior band
members, was dedicated to the
"memory of the man (Crofoot) who
dedicated himself to us," Senior
Bob Alpi said. Selections were also
presented/during the ceremony by
the senior highxhoirararthe choral
seniors.
As Salutatorian, Salgado commended the e f f o r t s and
achievements of the SRC senior
class in the field of athletics, community support and the cooperation exhibited by the members of
the cl&ss
Salgado said that 63 percent of
the SRC seniors planned to attend
college, "with 10 percent entering
the military and 25 percent planning to enter the work force following graduation.
"I feel we are capable of facing
the challenges^ that lie ahead,"
Salgado said; [expressing his appreciation to "parents, teachers,
Mr. Perkins (the high school principal) and especially to Mr. Bissell
(the class advisor) who made our
senior year an outstanding one."
Salmon River Valedictorian
Robert Rubadeau began his address to cheers and shouts of approval by his classmates.
"The Class of '88 is at a point
where they have a foot In the door
of life," Rubadeau said. "Can the
Class of '88 handle what is beyond
high school? I think so."
He said he thought the class was
ready to face the world, because he
felt they had achieved the maturation necessary to do so and had attained a positive personal image.
He attributed the development of
a good self image to the
"friendliness of the teachers at
Salmon."
"The Class of '88 is a special
breedF,'rRubadeau"said'. "Wenave '
serious .ambitions...and a hunger '
for- success," he said adding emphatically that he was confident
they could achieve their goals and
would be able to handle what lies
ahead.
Before,diplomas were awarded,
academic and community service
awards were presented. .
High School Principal William H.
Perkins then commended the class
for their "cooperation." He said
"their help through this year has
been outstanding." Board President Marion Elliott
urged the class to diligently pursue
their goals, expressing her hope
