Invaders and Settlers! - St Helen`s Primary School Alveston

Literacy
First we will be looking at a story called ‘The Lost Happy
Endings’ by Carol Ann Duffy and Jane Ray. It contains some
excellent figures of speech, some fantastic descriptive
vocabulary and some beautiful pictures.
Next we will be reading the Anglo Saxon myth of Beowulf.
For our non-fiction work, we will be looking at and then
writing a journalistic report about one of the significant
events during the time of the invaders!
Numeracy
We will be covering the objectives from the new numeracy
curriculum looking at multiplication and division, shape and
space and measures as well as the following, which will be topic
based:
- Roman numerals
- How the names for the months of the year have come from
Roman words
- How names for shapes have Latin origins
ICT
We will be familiarising ourselves with the updated computers (how to
save things in their right folders and how to find their work again the
next time they log on).
We will also be learning all about the features of Word (Microsoft
Office) and practicing our typing skills.
Music
We will also be finding out that a lot of the words that we
use today have Latin origin and investigating some of these.
PE
Monday will be outside games and Tuesday will be
inside games. This term we will practicing the skills
involved in and then learning to play netball.
The children will do music with Mrs Joliffe and will be
learning to play the recorder (they will be provided but if
your child has one they are welcome to bring in their
own!)
They will also be receiving sessions with STOMP, who are a
percussion group that uses the body and ordinary objects
to create a physical theatre performance.
Invaders and Settlers!
Science
We will be conducting lots of experiments this term to so with floating
and sinking, forces and experimenting with the catapults, which we will be
making in Design Technology.
We will also find out how many of the words for parts of the body have
Latin origin.
History
- The Roman Empire and its impact on Britain
- Britain’s settlement by Anglo-Saxons and Scots
- The Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle for the Kingdom of England to the
time of Edward the Confessor
We will also be looking at a timeline of key historical events and finding
out where the invaders came on it.
DT
We will be researching, designing, making and then evaluating a Roman
catapult!
Art
We will be looking at different ways of using and applying paint; learning
about primary and secondary colours and mixing colours to form other
shades of colour.

Geography
LOCATIONAL KNOWLEDGE:

- use maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate countries and describe features studied
- use the eight points of a compass, four and six-figure grid references, symbols and key (including the use of Ordnance Survey
maps) to build their knowledge of the United Kingdom and the wider world
- use fieldwork to observe, measure, record and present the human and physical features in the local area using a range of
methods, including sketch maps, plans and graphs, and digital technologies.
PHSE and RE
In PHSE, our topic for the first term will be
‘Getting On and Falling Out’ and ‘Say no to
Bullying’
In RE we will be looking at the use of sacred
texts by different religions.
WOW events:
We will be re-enacting the invasions by the Romans, Anglo Saxons and
Vikings using the knowledge we have gained about the events and the
armour that we have made.
We will be going to on a trip to Carleon Castle!
