6b Students employ technology in the development of strategies for solving problems in the real
world.
Purpose: Students will learn how to setup a new worksheet, enter content into cells, and
create simple formulas.
Read over these directions BEFORE you begin working on this activity.
Part 1. This is what a spreadsheet worksheet looks like.
 When you look at a spreadsheet screen, you see columns, rows and
cells.
 Columns are labeled with letters, beginning with the letter A. The
Excel spreadsheet we will be using has over 200 columns – column A
through column IV.
 Rows are labeled with numbers beginning with the number 1. The
spreadsheet we will be using has 1,000 rows – row 1 through row
500.
 These columns and rows intersect forming a grid. Each cell in this
grid has a name based on its location. The first cell in this grid is
called A1.
 Can you find C12? What about F6?

Part 2.
The Spreadsheet
1. Create a spreadsheet that uses formulas.
 Open a new Microsoft Excel spreadsheet worksheet.
 Save As SS1YourName
 Enter your header and footer
 Insert Tab: Header/Footer or
 View Tab: Page Layout
o Name Date Hour right aligned in header
o Your log-in number left aligned and Project Name center
aligned in footer
 Make your worksheet look EXACTLY like the sample below.
Notice the blank rows

2. Format your spreadsheet this way.
 Highlight cells A1 through E22. Simply click and drag from A1 to
E22. Change your Font to one you choose, size 14. Even though
the cells are empty, your formatting will still apply to future data.
Put a border around your data.
 Center and BOLD the four titles.
 Color the cells that will hold the formulas as shown above. Use
the paint bucket icon to color these cells yellow.
 While still highlighting cells A1-E22, click Format: RowHeight.
Choose AutoFit
 Click Format: ColumnWidth. Choose AutoFit Click OK.
Part 3 - The Formulas
A Formula always begins with an equal sign (=).
This is a typical formula:
=(B2+B3)
The addition sign tells you that this formula adds the contents of cell
B2 to the contents of cell B3 and displays the answer in the cell
containing the formula. It could also be =(B2+C2) or any cell name.

Let’s




figure out the formula that belongs in cell B6.
Click your cursor into cell B6.
Type in this formula:
=(B4-B5)
Notice the Subtraction Sign.
Repeat this type of formula in cells B9, B12, & B15.
Let’s figure out the formula that belongs in cell C6.
 Click your cursor into cell C6.
 Type in this formula:
=(C4*C5)
 Notice the Multiplication Sign.
 Repeat this type of formula in cells C9, C12, & C15.
Let’s figure out the formula that belongs in cell D6.
 Click your cursor into cell D6.
 Type in this formula:
=(D4/D5)
 Notice the Division Sign.
 Repeat this type of formula in cells D9, D12, & D15.
A Formula may have a set of parentheses. The sum function formula
uses parentheses to include the cells that you want to add. Your sum
function may use different cell names
Example: =sum(E6:E12)
This formula will ADD the contents of the cells E6 through E12.
Use the sum function for cells E8 & E13 in your own worksheet.
