Novel Project #1 - Elements of a Novel
PROJECT DUE DATE:
As you have learned, there are several elements of a novel: The five stages of plot-exposition, rising action,
climax, falling action, and resolution-setting, theme, and conflict.
Five Stages of Plot:
1. Exposition: introduces the setting
and the characters; sets up or hints
at the conflict
2. Rising Action: shows how the
conflict unfolds and becomes more
complicated; builds suspense
3. Climax: is the most exciting moment
and the turning point in the story;
often results in a change for the
main character
4. Falling Action: eases our suspense;
reveals how the main character
begins to resolve their conflict
5. Resolution: ties up loose ends;
sometimes offers an unexpected
twist or surprise before the story
ends
•
•
Types of Conflict:
1. Man vs. Man – two people are pitted
against each other
2. Man vs. Nature – a person is forced
to face a powerful natural force such as
a tornado or the ocean
3. Man vs. Society – a person
confronting their society; can present
itself as a person trying to change
society for the better
4. Man vs. the Supernatural – a person
is faced with battling a supernatural
force that seems much more powerful
than themselves
5. Man vs. Machine – a person is faced
with trying to beat a machine
6. Man vs. Himself – a mental conflict
between a character and his or her mind;
usually a fatal flaw leads to their
downfall
Setting is the time and place in which a story happens
o Time can include time of day , historical period, or year
o Place can include a school, library, the moon etc.
