Fall 2010 A Newsletter from Northboro Oil Co., Inc. President’s Letter Stop Ignoring Your Heating System! For better or for worse, it’s the American Way: These days we need the latest and the greatest in everything. You’ve got to have the most up-to-date computer technology or the hottest mobile device. You might trade in your car sooner than you need to just to have the newest model. And your children have their eyes on this fall’s sneakers or toys, because anything else is “so last year.” And throughout all these upgrades, stands your poor oil boiler or furnace! It may be performing at 75% … 70% … or even 60% efficiency, burning oil like there’s no tomorrow. Stop ignoring your heating system, and call us for an upgrade! We’re talking about your home comfort … your family’s warmth … one of the basic necessities of life! If your current heating system is more than 20 years old, call Northboro Oil now for a FREE, no-obligation, in-home heating system consultation. Today’s boilers and furnaces are super-efficient, cleaner, quieter and smaller – and can save you up to 30% in energy costs. A home that used 1,000 gallons last year could reduce consumption to 700 gallons with an upgrade, for a one-year savings of $900 (assuming a price of $3/gallon). With savings like that, your new heating system is paid for in just a few years. While you’re at it, why not consider upgrading your cooling equipment too? If you install a qualifying model by the December 31 deadline, you’re eligible for the $1,500 federal tax credit. By the way, if you’re not ready to upgrade your boiler, furnace or air conditioner, we also offer affordable energy-saving devices, such as programmable thermostats and burner controls that respond to the outside temperature. Give us a call and learn how you can conserve for just pennies a day! From our family to yours, we wish you a happy, safe, cozy and comfortable fall. Common Home Heating Myths SHATTERED! Throughout our many years in business, we’ve advised customers who thought they were doing the right thing in regard to their home heating, but were actually doing the opposite. Here are a few examples. Is Your Water Heater in Hot Water? Maybe your long, hot shower isn’t as long or as hot as it used to be. Maybe you’ve just installed a dishwasher. Or maybe your family has expanded and you’re taking more baths and washing more clothes than ever before. If so, it may be time to replace or upgrade your water heater. Northboro can help! We have the finest energyefficient models on the market today … and, of course, the finest technicians who can install your equipment in a jiffy! Our customers with new water heaters have told us how impressed they are with having low-cost access to virtually unlimited amounts of hot water. The latest units produce a reliable, inexpensive supply of domestic hot water and have high recovery rates, meaning they can heat large amounts of water quickly. We have several types of water heaters to choose from – indirect-fired, direct-fired, aqua booster and tankless coil. Forbes.com lists tankless water heaters as one of its “Nine EarthFriendly Fixes for Your Home,” citing that these on-demand water heaters use 25% to 35% less energy than conventional tanks. Call us today at (508) 393-6200 to find out which water heater is best for your needs and budget. 2 Myth #1: If you turn the thermostat to its highest setting, the heat will go on faster. We’ve heard this story from plenty of customers: They come home to a cold house and, wanting immediate heat, turn the thermostat up … and then higher … and higher still. Fact: Most boilers and furnaces deliver heat at the same rate no matter how high they’re set. So the best thing to do is to just set your system at the temperature you’d like, and your unit will heat your home as fast as it can. Of course, if your system simply doesn’t seem to be giving you heat, give us a call. Myth #2: If you want to upgrade for more heat, you should buy the biggest heating system possible. This is a common myth that our service manager encounters when speaking with customers who feel that bigger is better. Fact: When it’s time to upgrade your boiler or furnace, choosing one of the correct size (we’re talking about heating output, not inches) is critical. Oversized heating systems are more inefficient and expensive to operate. During your free in-home heating system consultation, our service manager will look at your home, review your family’s needs, and figure out exactly which size system to install. Myth #3: If you go away on vacation, you should turn your heat off completely. We don’t want our customers to learn the truth the hard way – read on. Fact: Never turn your boiler or furnace off when you go away during the winter. Your pipes could freeze and burst – not a pleasant discovery when you return home! Instead, turn your thermostat to 55 degrees, which saves money, keeps water pipes warm and prevents condensation on walls and windows. You should also arrange for your home to be checked while you are away – or ask us about a remote sensing device, which lets Northboro Oil check it for you. PHIL, THE FILL PIPE SAYS, “THANKS FOR CLEARING THE WAY FOR DELIVERIES!” “Pssst … it’s me, Phil, your oil fill pipe! When the leaves fall this autumn and the snow falls this winter, I can surprise your Northboro Oil deliveryman with a disappearing act. He may be searching to find me from memory or a general description of the location on the delivery ticket. I wouldn’t want you to miss a delivery! Please help me out by simply removing the leaves or snow that might block the path to yours truly. You might also consider placing a marker or flag next to me to signal ‘here I am!’ You’ll be assured of a full tank of oil when you need it and the Northboro delivery people – and I – will appreciate your help!” Your fill pipe, Phil P.S. Northboro Oil and I really care about your safety, so if you are a senior citizen or have medical issues, please don’t do anything that might put your health at risk. Oilheat Is One Little Thing We Get from Crude Oil When you stop and think about it, it’s amazing how many things get their start from crude oil. From comfy synthetic fabrics to the medicines that make us feel better, from fertilizers that help our gardens grow to the toys our kids play with – none of these would be around without oil. Source: U.S. Energy Information Agency What if your heating system needed an important part that you could not afford? Emergencies do occur – and we’ve seen customers pay a week’s salary or more for a boiler part that could have been covered under our Complete Comfort Plan. Our plan covers over 30 essential system parts. If any of these parts requires repair or replacement due to normal wear and tear, we’ll replace it at no cost. Our plan also includes an annual tune-up and inspection, which spares you from a potentially expensive repair. Here is how a barrel (42 gallons) of crude oil breaks down: Diesel – 10.31 Other Distillates (heating oil) – 1.38 Jet Fuel – 4.07 Other Products – 7.01 Heavy Fuel Oil (residual) – 1.68 Liquefied Petroleum Gases – 1.72 Gasoline – 18.56 What if you just extended your equipment warranty? An extended warranty provides repairs or equipment replacement in the event that your heating system fails to perform properly, but does not include any preventive maintenance. Our Complete Comfort Plan, on the other hand, proactively delivers the preventive care that your equipment needs to perform efficiently and reliably throughout the cold months.
