Thursday 8:30 AM—4:00 PM Saturday 8:30 AM—Noon Friday 8:30 AM—3:00 PM Sunday 9:00 AM—12:30 PM (In Narthex) (Signed for the hearing impaired) (Signed for the hearing impaired) December 18, 2016 Fourth Sunday of Advent Page 2 From the desk of Sister Mary Barbara Hassler, OSF—Director of Ministry of Care and Bereavement “What good is it that our dear Mother Mary gave birth to Jesus in her flesh 2,000 years ago if I do not give birth to Jesus in my life today?” --Meister Eckhart (paraphrased) This quotation is one of my favorites to reflect upon during the Advent and Christmas season because it really calls forth from me and challenges me to live the Christian life in the here and now, in the circumstances of my life. The readings for this Fourth Sunday of Advent focus on Mary and Joseph and the announcement by an angel that Mary was to give birth to Emmanuel, “God is with us.” There are times when we experience darkness, fear, doubt or pain in our lives and we wonder if “God is with us” can possibly be true. How often Mary and Joseph must have reflected on this as they struggled to believe that God was with them in their confusion. Whether it be the death of a loved one, a loss of a job, a serious illness, or the misunderstanding of a friend, we, too, can encounter doubt and fear. “Is God really there for me?” One of the difficulties I have in my own life is letting go of trying to control all that happens in my life. I do not consider myself a control freak but I am a planner and organizer and when those plans ‘go south’ I can become impatient. The unknown can be very frightening for us and trust is hard to come by when we are experiencing difficult times. That is when I look to Mary and Joseph and the trust they must have had: Mary saying yes to God despite her unknown future and Joseph’s willingness to take on the responsibility of fatherhood despite the circumstances he found himself in. *** Mary gave birth to Jesus in the flesh 2,000 years ago. We give birth to Jesus in our world today when we bring comfort to those in grief, when we share food & clothing with those who have very little, when we let the driver in despite being in a hurry to get someplace, when we give a listening ear to someone who has just heard they are seriously ill. God finds ways to break through in the seemingly mundane happenings of our lives. With trust, hope and faith, we can say like Mary, “Let it be done to me as you say” or respond like Joseph who “did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him.” My prayer is that you have many experiences of “God is with us” during this Advent and Christmas season. ***Sculpture in Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Wichita, KS December 18, 2016 Fourth Sunday of Advent Page 3 A Prayer from Pope Francis on Advent and its sense of hope: Jesus, in you I am never alone, even at difficult moments, even when my life’s journey comes up against problems and obstacles that seem insurmountable. I accompany you, I follow you, but above all I know that you accompany me and carry me on your shoulders. This is my joy, this is the hope that I must bring to this world. Teach me to see with your eyes, to live life as you lived, to understand life as you understood it. Help me be ready for an encounter with you, which means being able to see the signs of your presence, keeping my faith alive with prayer and the sacraments, and taking care not to forget about God. - A Prayer for Our Advent Journey with Christ, Pope Francis HELP DECORATE THE CHURCH FOR CHRISTMAS If you would like to help decorate for Christmas, we will be putting up trees after the 11:15 Mass today, Sunday, December 18th. December 18, 2016 Fourth Sunday of Advent Page 7 WhatisaBellarmineJesuitweekend retreat, andwhywouldyouwanttomakeone? It is a brief chance on a Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday morning to step away from your busy, sometimes unproductive routines, to be in a quiet setting where God appreciates your presence, and listens to your personal needs. You feel His love for you, then He sends you off with the extra help He will give you in your daily life. It’s not a big commitment – it goes by quickly. You don’t have to be religious – God loves sinners, sometimes more than saints. It isn’t scary – it’s mostly just relaxing. And when you pull away on Sunday at noon, you think, “Really glad I went!” We would be very pleased to answer any questions you might have, or you can call the Bellarmine of ice (847-3811261). Dan Moore & Jerry Nora, Deacons of St. Mary of Vernon [email protected] | [email protected] THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR CHISTMAS & NEW YEAR’S GENEROSITY! DON’T FORGET THE SUNDAY OFFERINGS TOO! Your past generosity to your parish for Christmas and New Year’s has always been awesome. We have come to count on your faithfulness to cover our operating expenses in our yearly budget, so we know you will continue to be as generous this year (and perhaps even more so). Because Christmas & New Year’s both fall on Sundays this year, we also rely on your using the additional regular “Sunday envelope” that is in your packet for those same two days as well. As you and your fellow parishioners appreciate our various ministries, services and opportunities provided on your behalf and on that of so many others, we encourage you to use both envelopes in order to help us fulfill our budget for this fiscal year. Thank you so much. December 18, 2016 Fourth Sunday of Advent Page 8 2016 MEN’S CLUB CHRISTMAS PARTY The Saint Mary of Vernon Men’s Club would like to invite all men of the parish to their annual Christmas Party. The party will be preceded by a brief meeting which will start at 7:00pm this Monday, December 19th in the Rev. John P. Finnegan Parish Center North Hall. Bring your appetite! Enjoy the many home prepared dinner items and snacks that will be presented along with refreshments and the camaraderie of your fellow parishioners. For additional information, call Bob at 847367-8057. PADS SEEKS DONATIONS BRIGHT SPACE NEEDS VOLUNTEERS During the hours our Sharing Hands Food Pantry is open, we provide “Bright Space”, a learning and fun facility for the children who accompany their parents to the pantry. The children are generally ages 1 to 8. We currently need some adult volunteers to supervise this group. Sharing Hands hours are Tuesday evenings from 6:20 to 8:20 p.m. and Saturday mornings from 9-11 a.m. If you would consider helping out, please call Mary Mazza at 847-404-9231. Thank you! As our PADS volunteers say farewell to our Thursday night homeless guests on Friday mornings, they send them off with a bagged lunch to get them through the day. They are currently in need of juice boxes and bottled water to include in these lunches. If you can supply either of these, please bring them to the Church Narthex on Sunday, or call the parish office during the week for the code to the PADS donation door on the side of the Parish Center. SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR ELECTRONIC GIVERS St. Mary of Vernon church would like to thank the 250 families who are currently giving electronically. You may not see these fellow parishioners place an envelope in the basket every week, but their consistent giving does not go unnoticed in our parish office. Each month our parish receives a steady and predictable stream of income from those donors who have made the commitment to give to God first by having a designated contribution automatically transferred to our parish through GiveCentral. If you would like to learn more about this easy, safe and secure way of giving, please contact our Business Manager, Susan Gray, at 847-362-1005 or [email protected]. Or check out our website www.maryofvernon.org and click on the Donate link on the bottom of our homepage. SMV Christmas Pageant 2016 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION By now, the first Christmas carols are heard in the home, but usually not yet in church. What is a “carol” anyway? Originally, a carol was any kind of communal song sung at a festival such as a harvest. By the thirteenth century or so, carols were associated with household celebrations. “Carol” comes from the Old French carula, meaning a circular dance. Carols weren’t for church, since the language of liturgy was Latin and the carols were in the common language. Their characteristic sound comes from medieval chord patterns, and they often have strong refrains for everyone to sing. Even in the churches of the Reformation, carols didn’t make it into church services until the 1870s or so, since there was a preference for psalms. Anglicans resisted popular carols; most of our beloved carols came via the Methodists, an offshoot of the Church of England. The Catholic Church generally didn’t admit carols to liturgy either, but we didn’t make laws against them. We are told that the beloved carol “Silent Night” comes from Catholic Austria and a harried parish music director. Joseph Mohr, the priest of St. Nicholas in Oberndorf, had written the words in 1816, but offered them to his music director, Franz Gruber, when the church’s organ broke. Mohr asked him to write a melody that could be played on guitar as a prelude to Mass. Gruber finished the tune just hours before midnight Mass in 1818. The people were shocked to hear a guitar in church, but were charmed by the sweet lullaby. The church was swept away by a flood in the 1990s and the village later relocated, but the townspeople have set up the “Silent Night Memorial Chapel” at the site. Today the carol is in print in some three hundred languages. How wonderful that the pipe organ broke on that night! —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. WERC Job Search Tip of the Week Donʹt always follow your passion. ʺFollow your passionʺ is one of the most common pieces of career wisdom, says Cal Newport (author of So Good They Canʹt Ignore You: Why Skills Trump Passion in the Quest for Work You Love). “Itʹs also wrong.” If you study people who end up loving their work, most of them did not follow a pre-existing passion, he says. “Instead, their passion for the work developed over time as they got be er at what they did and took more control over their career.” Isa Adney (author of Community College Success and the blog FirstJobOutofCollege.com) agrees to some extent. She doesnʹt think job seekers should completely disregard their passions--but does believe that “challenging this conventional wisdom is vital, especially since studies still show most Americans are unhappy in their jobs.ʺ Upcoming WERC Support Group Meetings – 7:30 PM, Rooms 110-112 of the Parish Center Look for some changes in our meeting schedule, beginning in January. Our support group will meet on January 23; all are welcome. Registration Deadline: January 14, 2017 December 18, 2016 Fourth Sunday of Advent Page 11 SUMMONED BY GOD As Christmas draws near, Advent’s scriptures lure us into a world of dreams, signs, wonders, and the miracle of the virgin birth. Too often we allow the great stories of our faith, the ones that are most familiar, simply to wash over us. Today’s Gospel account of the events leading up to the birth of the Lord reads like a present-day soap opera. Yet Joseph’s courage, even in the midst of what must have been an incredibly confusing time, provides a model for us. Each week, we are summoned by God to embrace the way of goodness and truth through the proclamation of God’s holy word. Like Joseph, we are called to do as the Lord commands us. As we stand at the threshold of Christmas, let us have the courage to be open to whatever it is that the Lord will require of us as we celebrate the miracle of Bethlehem. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. REQUESTS FOR PRAYER Our parish welcomes the opportunity to include the loved ones of parishioners in prayer. We do respect people’s privacy, however; and restrict the list in the bulletin to names that have been given to us by the ailing persons themselves, or by a spouse or immediate family member. The prayers included in the Sunday liturgy petitions are for parishioners facing imminent serious surgery or death (also requested by themselves, or immediate family). We also have a Prayer Ministry, people dedicated to praying for specific intentions. To have your intention put on the prayer list, please fill out a form by the box under the Mother Theresa picture in the narthex. These intentions are sent out weekly to our “prayer warriors”, and first-names only are included.
