Be careful not to forget the covenant of the LORD your God that he made with you; do not make for
yourselves an idol in the form of anything the LORD your God has forbidden. 24 For the LORD your God
is a consuming fire, a jealous God.
Deuteronomy 4: 23-24
Peter’s miraculous
escape from prison
SO PETER was kept in prison, but the
church was earnestly praying to God for
him.
The night before Herod was to bring
him to trial, Peter was sleeping between
two soldiers, bound with two chains, and
sentries stood guard at the
entrance. Suddenly an angel of the Lord
appeared and a light shone in the cell. He
struck Peter on the side and woke him up.
‘Quick, get up!’ he said, and the chains
fell off Peter’s wrists.
Then the angel said to him, ‘Put on
your clothes and sandals.’ And Peter did
so. ‘Wrap your cloak round you and
follow me,’ the angel told him.
Acts 12: 5-8
Even Peter had to put his own clothes
and sandals on, and wrap is cloak around
himself.

Why do I feel so special and always accepted for who I am, at St. Wilfrid’s Church
Canon Michael
Walters
Our Assistant
Minister writes:
The humble will see their
God at work and be glad.
Let all who seek God’s help
be encouraged.
Psalm 69:32 (New Living Translation)
IT IS very easy to get ‘down’ at the present
time. The media constantly remind us about the
unemployment figures, the effect of
Government cut-backs, the threat of terrorism
and revelations of child abuse.
On a personal level we may be finding it
hard to make ends meet and some fear for their
jobs and livelihood.
Add to that illness or
frailty in many families and it’s hardly
surprising that there’s not a little gloom around.
And the weather doesn’t help!
“To believe that ultimately God is
in control does not mean that we do
nothing. ”
so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him, my Saviour and my
God.’
(Psalm 42:5-6, 11; Psalm 43:5)
Here is someone reminding himself that
there is more to reality than what we can see and
touch – certainly there is far more than the
things which get us down. He makes it clear to
himself that ultimately God is in control, God
knows all that is going on and God cares.
Furthermore the Psalmist is convinced that God
can be known and trusted – indeed God is my
Saviour and my God. So he is determined to
praise God and get everything into proportion.
To believe that ultimately God is in
control does not mean that we do nothing. In a
democracy like ours we will write to our MP
about the things that trouble us, we will seek to
bring practical help to those who are in trouble,
but above all we will pray and praise God who
lifts up the downcast.
I know of no better cure for being ‘down’.
Michael Walters
Christians have further concerns. For
example, the Government’s plans to re-define
marriage constitute a challenge to what most
regard as the proper Biblical and moral
understanding of what marriage is about. It
appears that Christian teaching and Christian
morality is being marginalised in the nation.
One of the Psalm writers knew what it
was to be ‘down’. But he also knew how to deal
with it. Three times he writes:
“Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why

‘Men and Women
in Marriage’
– new document from Faith and
Order Commission
THE CHURCH of England’s view of the long
-established meaning of marriage has been
outlined in a new report – ‘Men and Women in
Marriage’ - published this Spring by the
Church’s Faith and Order Commission.
The report sets out the continued
importance and rationale for the Church’s
understanding of marriage, as reflected in the
1,000 marriage services conducted by the
Church of England every week.
The document also seeks to provide “a
more positive background on how Christians
have understood and valued marriage” arguing
that marriage “continues to provide the best
context for the raising of children”.
The report begins with the Church’s
basic premise that “marriage is a creation
ordinance, a gift of God in creation and means
of His grace”. It seeks to enlarge the
understanding of marriage defined as “a
faithful, committed, permanent and legally
sanctioned relationship between a man and a
woman, central to the stability and health of
human society.”
Recognising the ongoing debate around
marriage in society, the report acknowledges
that
marriage,
“like
most
important
undertakings in life, can be lived more
successfully or less successfully... Public
discussion at this juncture needs a clear view of
why Christians believe and act in relation to
marriage as they do and this document is
offered as a resource for that.”
The Bishop of Coventry Dr Christopher
Cocksworth, Chair of the Commission said:
“There is a danger in the current debate of
picking apart the institution of marriage which
is part of the social fabric of human society.
2
“This report seeks to celebrate all that is
good about marriage in its ability to bring
together biological difference and the generative
power of marriage to bring forth life. It also
recognises that there are forms of human
relationships which fall short of marriage in the
form God has given us.
“This report also underlines the role of the
Church in seeking to provide care, prayer and
compassion for those who for whatever reason
are unable to receive the gift of marriage in the
form that the Church has understood it and
continues to uphold. Whilst it is right that priests
and church communities continue to seek to
provide and devise pastoral care accommodation
for those in such situations, the document is clear
that public forms of blessing belong to marriage
alone.”
Pray for the youth of
our nation
CHRISTIAN young people in the UK today
tend to be undeterred by denominational
boundaries and theological differences, and so
God is using them to unite the church across our
villages, towns and cities. Please pray for the
many area-wide, cross-church youth initiatives
that have been established in recent years. Pray
that young people will be catalysts in bringing
the whole Body of Christ together in prayer and
mission across your area and across our nation.
Pray for all the youths of Northwich, and
for Youth United. Their next meeting will be on
Friday 12th July, at the Dane Walk Centre,
Northwich, starting at 7.30pm.
Pray that our Lord’s provision will be in
abundance for the group, that the leaders will be
richly blessed in all they are doing to bring the
youth of Northwich and surrounding areas
together.

Rev. Alexander
Lord
Concert by the
Rivendell Singers
ALTHOUGH ALEX has only been in
Davenham for a relatively short time, he very
quickly became a much loved member of the
Church family.
At the age of 99, he could be found reading,
studying and praying, as well as sawing up large
branches, and picking blackberries (in season).
Alex loved to paint and draw his
surroundings, he had just completed his story of
his memorable time in the Conwy Valley, with
his wife Dorothy, which contains a large number
of his paintings and drawings, this booklet he had
printed to commemorate his 100th birthday, (a
copy of this booklet can be purchased from Rob
or Kate Thompson).
Alex also painted some scenes that were
made into Christmas cards, some of which will
be available nearer to the season.
Alex had a lot of favourite quotes and
verses, this is the verse he ended his booklet
with: All the way my saviour leads me;
What have I to ask beside?
Can I doubt his tender mercy,
Who through life has been my guide?
Heav’nly peace, divinest comfort,
Here by faith in Him to dwell!
For I know, whate'ere befall me,
Jesus doeth all things well.

WHEN YOU are connected to your iPhone,
Blackberry, smart phone etc, you are connected
to a negative source of power.
 Cell phones emit radiofrequency energy, a
form of non-ionizing electromagnetic
radiation, which can be absorbed by tissues
closest to where the phone is held.
 The amount of radiofrequency energy a cell
phone user is exposed to depends on the
technology of the phone, the distance
between the phone’s antenna and the user,
the extent and type of use, and the user’s
distance from cell phone towers.
 Studies thus far have not shown a
consistent link between cell phone use and
cancers of the brain, nerves, or other tissues
of the head or neck. More research is
needed because cell phone technology and
how people use cell phones have been
changing rapidly. http://www.cancer.gov/
cancertopics/factsheet/Risk/cellphones
This negativity can also be a detriment
to your family, if you are continually using
your phone your family could suffer due to a
lack of quality time with them.
It is estimated that over 40 million
people use a mobile phone in the UK, and
approximately 1 in 5 of those regularly carry
two phones.

And now for the good news, there is a

has been around for centuries, and is a direct

The Power of Prayer
Are any of you suffering hardships? You
should pray. Are any of you happy? You should
sing praises. Are any of you sick? You should
call for the elders of the church to come and
pray over you, anointing you with oil in the
name of the Lord. Such a prayer offered in faith
will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you
well. And if you have committed any sins, you
will be forgiven.
Confess your sins to each other and pray
for each other so that you may be healed. The
earnest prayer of a righteous person has great
power and produces wonderful results. Elijah
was as human as we are, and yet when he
prayed earnestly that no rain would fall, none
fell for three and a half years! Then, when he
prayed again, the sky sent down rain and the
earth began to yield its crops.

Christian care for families
It will be a sign and

the LORD Almighty
Isaiah 19: 20a
AT THE May meeting Lesley Beeley told
members that Christian Signing is another
way to worship God. Some members already
knew her from Moulton Church and WI. She
had begun signing at All Saints Church
Marple, a group of three to four which grew to
sixteen to twenty seven in the end, using their
hands to praise God. She was running a youth
group there and two toddler groups and she
taught the children to sign.
We sang the alphabet tune to her as she
signed it and together we attempted to sign the
Lord’s Prayer. Even facial expression is
involved, looking adoringly up at God, when
you place him on high but looking with
despise at sin placing that low down.
She has found sign language useful in
her work at school where she is the business
manager, when talking to parents. At All
Saints Church, Marple the signing choir
performed Handle’s Messiah accompanied by
dancers at the side and invited people from the
deaf community. One man said he could hear
the music though his eyes, how amazing is
that!
She played the well known chorus on
CD and signed and we joined in with the
hallelujahs, sending our praise up to God. She
was thanked by Shirley and Sylvia gave her
some roses.
Some members went to the Diocesan
Festival at Chester Cathedral May 14th and
Joan and Linda carried the banner.
Our Strawberry Tea is at the British
Legion on July 31st at 2-4pm. Everyone most
welcome.
Our next meeting is on June 19th in
church “Members precious memories” when
Miriam Gibson and Joyce Saunders will be
speaking, everyone welcome to the talk
starting at 1pm.

Davenham Parish Church Ladies’ Circle
Fashion History
In Exquisite
Miniature
WHEN KAY BASHFORD and her greatnephew from New Zealand first started setting up
her props I wasn’t sure what to expect. Certainly
the splendid hat boxes that spanned the length of
two trestle tables looked tantalising but what she
then pulled out in turn had many of us gasping in
delight for what Kay has been collecting for
many years now is ‘quarter’ copies of hats that
were in vogue from as early as 1780 to the start
of World War 1.
With each replica hat came a potted, and
often hilarious, history of the social mores of the
time – the first being a kind of two-storey bonnet
when women wore panniers that distended their
skirts to such an extent that they had to relax
against leaning boards as sitting down would
have been impossible.
One of many of my own favourites was an
Autumn Capote as depicted in a painting by
Cezanne because we were seeing something from
a great work of art amongst a collection of
replicas that all looked like minor works of art.
Such was the skill and workmanship behind each
and every miniature. These bonnets were the
work of a company known as Pipkin & Bonnet
and Kay’s research was faultless as she talked us
through which great lady, often of royal lineage,
had started a vogue and just what men had
expected of their ladies in every century.
What amazed Kay and probably all of us
present was the fact that, despite there being no
communication between different land masses
like telephones and newspapers, fashions were
replicated everywhere. Today we would give
6
credit to the Internet for spreading new trends
but in the 19th century there were few such
tools for getting the latest crazes from A to B.
So how did the Tsarina of Russia come to
choose a hat that was an immediate ‘hit’ on
other continents?
Kay’s research often uncovered esoteric
and quite bizarre facts that had us amazed and
amused in turn. For instance, the first
permanent wave was developed in the early
1900s and cost an astounding £240 (at today’s
prices). It was also a procedure that took 8
hours and was likely to cost you all your hair
as well as the astronomical fee. The first hot
air balloon flight left London in 1784 when
2000 people paid to see its pilot and a dog, a
cat, a pigeon and a pair of oars float for 20
miles – a HUGE distance in those days. For
those interested, one of the oars fell overboard
and the pigeon shot off when it got the
chance. I cannot say the same for the dog and
cat although I believe the pilot survived.
Marion Watts won the flowers and Jean
Jolley won the raffle prize. Congratulations to
both of them. Next month is, of course, our
much vaunted 70th Anniversary social. This is
going to be a popular event and we know
already that upwards of 40 people will be
there ready to rock and roll. Do you feel like
rocking and rolling with us?

The violence
in Syria
A RECENT Joint statement from The
Archbishops of Canterbury and Westminster,
Justin Welby and Vincent Nichols, concerning
the ongoing violence in Syria:
Since the very first days of the Syrian
conflict in March 2011, we have prayed as we
watched in horror and sorrow the escalating
violence that has rent this country apart. We
have grieved with all Syrians - with the
families of each and every human life lost and
with all communities whose neighbourhoods
and livelihoods have suffered from escalating
and pervasive violence.
And ... our prayers also go with the
ancient communities of our Christian brothers
and sisters in Syria. The (recent) kidnapping of
two Metropolitan bishops of Aleppo, Mar
Gregorios Ibrahim of the Syriac Orthodox
Church and Paul Yazigi of the Greek Orthodox
Church of Antioch, and the killing of their
driver while they were carrying out a
humanitarian mission, is another telling sign
of the terrible circumstances that continue to
engulf all Syrians.
We
unreservedly
support
these
Christian communities, rooted in and attached
to the biblical lands, despite the many
hardships. We respond to the call from the
Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and
all the East, and the Syriac Orthodox
Patriarchate of Antioch and all the East,
urging churches worldwide to remain
steadfast in the face of challenging realities
and to bear witness to their faith in the power
of love in this world.
We both continue to pray for a political
solution to this tragic conflict that would stem
the terrible violence and also empower all
Syrians with their fundamental and
inalienable freedoms. We also call for urgent
humanitarian aid to reach all who are
suffering. We pray that Syria can recapture its
tradition of tolerance, rooted in faith and
respect for faiths living side by side.
+ Justin Welby + Vincent Nichols

Celebration
CLOSE FRIENDS of Barbara Jackson
celebrated with her at the Mill Pool in April on
the occasion of her 80th Birthday. Barbara
was a devoted member of St. Wilfrid's
congregation and a leading light in our Ladies
Circle, until mobility prevented her attendance.
As you can see she had a lovely time on her
Birthday. On behalf of all those present may I
thank Barbara for graciously hosting the lunch.

Spotlight On
Syria
THE
PEOPLE
of
Syria
desperately need our prayers - will
you pledge to pray?
Please stand with us in prayerful support
of the people of Syria. We want to see God
end the conflict and bring peace to the
millions of innocent people caught up in the
violence. We want to see ordinary Syrians
returning to their homes and rebuilding their
lives. The numbers of those effected by the
violence make grim reading:
4 million are in need of humanitarian
assistance in Syria;
2.5 million have been internally displaced;
1 million have been displaced to
neighbouring countries
...and the numbers are rising daily.
The infrastructure of Syria is
failing. Radhouane Nouicer, UN Regional
Humanitarian Co-ordinator, told journalists
recently, “Syrians have lost livelihoods and
20
jobs, their homes, their access to food, water,
fuel and health care, and they are watching the
future of their children being put at risk.”
Syrian Christians are caught up in the
violence too; it is rumoured that some have
been deliberately targeted in an attempt to make
them leave the country. Certainly many are
leaving in search of refuge and safety. The
Syrian Archbishop of Aleppo, Mar Gregorios, is
deeply concerned: "With the current
deterioration of security and employment, no
one can predict when these families will ever
return to their homes and what we are
experiencing is a one way exodus!" Will Syria,
once a country that allowed Christians to
worship freely, become another Iraq?
It is easy to feel powerless to help, yet
there is something we can do - PRAY.
Please join SAT-7's 12 week campaign
of prayer for Syria and let's cry out to God
for His mercy in this desperate situation.
http://www.sat7uk.org/SOS
Once you have signed up we will send
you weekly updates by email with specific
prayer points and news of how SAT-7 is
supporting Syrian Christians. We will also send
you a free campaign keyring that will remind
you to pray for Syria - all you need to do is
complete the form with your postal details
(unfortunately the campaign keyring can only
be sent out to addresses in the UK).
“The effective, fervent prayer of a
righteous man avails much.” James 5: 16
(NKJV) Let’s lean on this promise and look to
God to bring peace back to Syria.
Pray now for:
Humanitarian aid to reach those who
desperately need it;
Christians and church leaders to have courage
and be able to stand strong in their faith;
Wisdom for all those involved in trying to
negotiate peace for Syria.
Why do I feel so special and always accepted for who I am, at St. Wilfrid’s Church
‘Grace be unto When I Got to
you, and peace, Heaven
from God…’
SEVERAL OF Paul’s epistles open with the
words, ‘Grace be unto you, and peace, from
God.’ That’s because you cannot experience
God’s peace unless you first know how to
receive His grace and walk in it.
There are three things about grace you
need to understand: a) it cannot be earned; b) it
is God doing for you what you cannot do for
yourself; c) it doesn’t kick in until you stop
struggling and trying to do it in your own
strength. The Bible says, ‘…God opposes the
proud but gives grace to the humble’ (James 4:6
NIV).
The ‘humble’ are those who admit their
total inability to succeed without God’s help, but
the ‘proud’ are always trying to take the credit.
They like to think it’s their ability that gets the
job done, so they’ve difficulty asking God for
grace, and even more difficulty receiving it.
Peter writes, ‘Grow in grace…’ (2 Peter 3:18).
You only learn to trust God—by doing it!
You grow in grace by taking God at His Word,
counting on His gracious provision for each day,
and His intervention in situations that are
difficult or impossible for you. There will never
be a day when you don’t need God’s grace. And
if you are willing to acknowledge you need it
and receive it by faith, there will be no shortage
of it. ‘For out of His fullness (abundance) we
have all received [all had a share and we were all
supplied with] one grace after another and
spiritual blessing upon spiritual blessing and
even favour upon favour and gift [heaped] upon
gift’ (John 1:16 AMP).
I WAS SHOCKED, confused, bewildered
As I entered Heaven's door
Not by the beauty of it all
By the lights or its decor.
But it was the folks in Heaven
Who made me sputter and gasp
The thieves, the liars, the sinners
The alcoholics, the trash.
There stood the kid from seventh grade
Who swiped my lunch money twice
Next to him was my old neighbour
Who never said anything nice.
Uncle Bill, who I always thought
Was rotting away in hell
Was sitting pretty on cloud nine
Looking incredibly well.
I nudged Jesus, "What's the deal?
I would love to hear your take
How'd all these sinners get up here?
God must have made a mistake."
"And why is everyone so quiet
So sombre? Please give me a clue."
"Hush, child," said He. "They're all in shock
No one thought they'd see you!"
Never judge another person leave that up to God!

St Columba
THIS YEAR sees the 1450th anniversary of
the arrival of Columba, and with him,
Christianity, to the UK. This month is the
anniversary of the death of St Columba, on
9th June 597, who founded the monastery on
Iona.
Columba was born in Donegal, Ireland
and entered the monastery of St Finnian as a
young man, with the name Colum (‘the
dove’). He spent 15 years preaching and
teaching in Ireland and founded a number of
monasteries. He was skilled at illuminating
Biblical texts and it was alleged that he made
a copy of the Psalms from the edition
belonging to Finnian. As a result of this
dispute, a clan war broke out leading to a
battle at Cooldrevne in 561.
Consequently Columba was exiled to
Scotland, to where he could no longer see his
homeland. In 563, aged 42, he travelled to
Scotland with 12 monks landing on the
Kintyre Peninsula. He was granted land on the
island of Iona to establish his monastery,
which became the centre of his evangelising
mission.
‘The Iona community was characterised
by their purity of life, love of God and loyalty
to the monastic rules’. (Venerable Bede). The
monastery on Iona was fairly typical of the
time; the monks lived in separate cells and
spent time in worship and contemplation.
They produced copies of the Gospels and
worked on the land to support themselves and
in providing hospitality to visitors. However,
they also went out from Iona and evangelised
much of the Scottish Highlands and Islands.
Columba’s model for reaching people
has a lot to say to us today. In contrast to our
one-to-one evangelism, he used a team
approach to reach people in a settlement. He
would establish a community by inviting
seekers to join, or by bringing them into a
community of faith. Within this fellowship,
those seeking faith could engage in
22
conversation, ministry, prayer, and worship. In
time, they would be invited to commit their
lives to Christ. This approach is similar to
courses like Alpha or Christianity Explored,
which have proved very effective today.
When Columba died in 597 AD at 76 he
left behind a flourishing network of
monasteries, giving Iona a central place in the
Celtic Church, which continues today.
‘Be a bright flame before me, O God, a
guiding star above me. Be a smooth path
below me, a kindly shepherd behind me today,
tonight, and for ever. Alone with none but you,
my God I journey on my way; what need I fear
when you are near, O Lord of night and day?
More secure am I within your hand than if a
multitude did round me stand. Amen.’ (St
Columba).

The Lord is
my Shepherd
A SUNDAY SCHOOL teacher decided to
have her young class memorize one of the
most quoted passages in the Bible; Psalm 23.
She gave the youngsters a month to learn the
verse. Little Rick was excited about the task - but, he just couldn't remember the Psalm.
After much practice, he could barely get past
the first line. On the day that the kids were
scheduled to recite Psalm 23 in front of the
congregation, Ricky was so nervous. When it
was his turn, he stepped up to the
microphone and said proudly, 'The Lord is
my Shepherd, and that's all I need to know.'

THANK YOU BILL for all that you have
contributed to the care and upkeep of St.
Wilfrid’s Church over the years.
A few month’s after Bill had celebrated
his 90th birthday with his family, it was
announced that Bill had gone to be with our
Lord.
A year ago (June 2012) I published
details of some of his outstanding work
around Church, and with his family.
Bill’s life will be remembered with
fondness for all his achievements at St.
Wilfrid’s, especially, with his lasting
memorial of the New Garden of
Remembrance, which was inspired by him
and a small group of dedicated church
members.
Hopefully there will be a memorial
Service held for Bill, at St. Wilfrid’s, in the
near future.
