Stage 3 – Regional Competition 5. Stage 4 – National Competition 6. Links and contacts 1 Devised by Jane Driver, 2010 www.flsb.co.uk Project Overview Aim The aim of the Spelling Bee is for students in Year 7 who are beginners in a foreign language to practise and improve their vocabulary, spelling, pronunciation and memory skills in the target language (French, Spanish and German). Native or bilingual students as well as those who communicate in the language on a regular basis at home (speaking and/or listening) are not eligible to compete. It is the classroom teacher’s responsibility, with careful consideration of the ethos of the competition, to decide whether or not a student falls into this category. We are delighted to enjoy the continuing generous sponsorship of the European Commission and Vocab Express. The European Commission pays for all trophies for the year’s competition and for the refreshments at the National Final. Vocab Express host the Spelling Bee website, and competitors’ schools have free access to their online vocabulary learning platform for the duration of the Spelling Bee, for the words included in the competition. So students will be able to practise spelling the competition words through the site’s interactive learning mechanism both from school and at home. They will also be able to perfect their listening skills, using the site’s ever-growing database of audio files. The national winner’s school in each language will also be awarded a free KS3 subscription to Vocab Express for 2015/6. Process v The competition consists of four stages over the three terms: o Autumn end of Term – Individual Class o Spring Half Term - Whole School Competition o Spring end of Term – Regional Competition o Summer Term – National Competition v Students will be given 50 words to learn at the first stage of the competition and a further 50 words will be added at each subsequent stage. Vocabulary will be relevant to the curriculum. v The competition should be launched at the beginning of the autumn term and time should be spent in the first few lessons of the year teaching and practising the alphabet in the foreign language (paying attention to describing letters with accents, etc). v Students will be given the word in English. In contrast to a monolingual Spelling Bee, they will first have to translate it into the Target Language and then spell it out correctly using the alphabet in the Target Language. 2 Devised by Jane Driver, 2010 www.flsb.co.uk v When participating, students will be given one minute to correctly spell as many words as possible Students must translate the word with the correct article (this includes l’), but they only need to spell the noun. v Pronunciation must be accurate and spelling clearly enunciated. If the word and letters are not clearly and accurately pronounced, a point cannot be awarded. v If they are spelling a colour that begins with ‘de color ……’, they need to say that in the translation, but only need spell the colour. v They should be allowed to finish a word that they started before the time was up. v Students can pass at any time, but must say pass in the TL. Accents and other punctuation (note: not question marks) must be spelt in the following way: o French What does the accent look like ? â ê î ô û ë ï What is its name ? circumflex accent accent circonflexe /si kɔ̃fleks/ ç cedilla é acute accent accent aigu /egu/ è grave accent accent grave /g av/ ö ü diaeresis cédille /sedij/ tréma /t ema/ § Space - blanc § Pass – je passe § Hyphen – trait d’union § Apostrophe – apostrophe 3 Devised by Jane Driver, 2010 www.flsb.co.uk o Spanish § Accent – tilde / acento § Space – espacio § Pass – paso § Hyphen – guión NB New Spanish spelling rules: there have been numerous questions over the years of the competition concerning the new rules, so here is the updated list: El alfabeto espanõl A B C D E F G H I - ah J jota R erreh beh K ka S esseh theh L elleh T teh deh M emeh U oo eh N eneh V oobeh effeh Ñ eñeh W oobeh dobleh jeh O o X ekees asheh P peh Y yeh ee Q koo Z theta ch = Separately ‘theh’ and ‘asheh’ ll = eyeh ñ = enyeh rr = doble erreh Note: there are correct alternatives to some of them – but those listed here are the shorter options and therefore quicker to say! 4 Devised by Jane Driver, 2010 www.flsb.co.uk o German § § Umlaut – Umlaut § ß - S-Zett / scharfes S § Space – Leerzeichen / Abstand § Pass – ich passe Hyphen – Bindestrich v Words should be allocated in random order. v The names of the winners at each stage of the competition should be submitted to the Spelling Bee website, www.flsb.co.uk (On the dashboard: Stage 1 winners) so that they can receive a certificate in recognition of their achievements. 5 Devised by Jane Driver, 2010 www.flsb.co.uk Stage 1 – Class Competition v Teachers should: a. launch the competition to the students at the very beginning of the term. b. teach the alphabet in the Target Language as early as possible in the term, ensuring that students can name letters with accents, etc.. c. allocate the stage’s 50 words to their students so that they can begin memorising them and practising (the words for each stage are attached to this document). d. test students on a weekly basis. It is suggested that this be done as a starter or a plenary at least once a week and that students test each other either in pairs or as a whole class. e. hold a class competition at the end of the first term. i. Students should be tested individually and not use any prompts. ii. Students should have one minute to correctly spell as many words as possible in the Target Language. iii. The teacher should choose words in random order and should say the words in English, the student should then say the word in the Target Language and then spell it using the Target Language alphabet. iv. Students receive one point per word correctly translated and spelt within the time. If students begin a word when the timer goes, they should be able to finish. v. In the event of a tie, students with equal scores should participate in an additional one-minute round in which the number of passes should be counted. In the event of a tie in this additional round, the student with the least number of passes will be the winner of the tie-breaker. If they are still tied, a sudden-death round should be played: • Students should take it in turns to correctly spell a word. • If a student spells a word incorrectly, they are out. • This should continue until there is one winner and a runner-up. NB Smaller schools may like to put 4 winners per class through at this stage v Deadline: 19th December 2014. 6 Devised by Jane Driver, 2010 www.flsb.co.uk Stage 1: Class Competition (for class use) School Co-ordinator Class Name Class Winners Forename(s) Comments 7 Devised by Jane Driver, 2010 Email Surname www.flsb.co.uk Stage 2: School Competition v Teachers should allocate the extra 50 words to the stage 1 class winners (word lists are attached). v Class winners should meet weekly to test each other: this could be done at break or lunchtime. Additionally, the class could test their winners each week as a starter or plenary. v A School Competition should be held at the end of the Spring Half Term. The same rules apply as for Stage One, the only difference being that students will be tested on 100 words rather than 50 words. v The names of four winners* should be submitted. *Please note that only 4 pupils per school qualify for the Regional Final. Therefore, if you are doing more than 1 language you might like to tell pupils from the start that only the school winner goes through to the Regional Final, and perhaps the strongest runner-up. v Deadline – 14th February 2015 8 Devised by Jane Driver, 2010 www.flsb.co.uk Stage 2: School Competition (for class use) School Name & Address Co-ordinator Forename(s) Name Email School Winners Surname Comments 9 Devised by Jane Driver, 2010 www.flsb.co.uk Stage 3 – Regional Competition v Teachers should allocate the extra 50 words to the stage 2 school winners (word lists are attached). v School winners should meet weekly to test each other: this could be done at break or lunchtime. Additionally, the relevant classes could test the winners each week as a starter or plenary. v A Regional Competition will be held at the end of the Spring term (location TBC). The same rules apply as for Stages One and Two, the only difference being that students will be tested on 150 words rather than 50 or 100 words. Each school can send a total of 4 pupils to compete in the regional competition. v The Regional Winners will be announced on the day and there will be a prize-giving ceremony. 10 Devised by Jane Driver, 2010 www.flsb.co.uk Stage 4 – National Competition v Teachers should allocate the extra 50 words to the stage 3 regional winners (word lists are attached). v Regional winners should practise weekly: this could be done at break or lunchtime with other students. Additionally, the relevant class(es) could test the winner(s) each week as a starter or plenary. v A National Competition will be held at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge on 3rd July, 12.00 – 4.30. The same rules apply as for Stages One, Two and Three, the only difference being that students will be tested on 200 words rather than 50, 100 or 150 words. v The National Winners will be announced on the day and there will be a prize-giving ceremony. v In a change to previous years, the winners of the semi-final rounds will be announced at the start of the final. National competitors must therefore ensure that suitable transport arrangements are made such that all can attend the final round, which will finish no later than 5.00pm. 11 Devised by Jane Driver, 2010 www.flsb.co.uk LINKS & CONTACTS Routes into Languages East ([email protected]) Sarah Schechter ([email protected]) Jane Driver ([email protected]) Rachel Hawkes ([email protected]) SPONSORS European Commission (http://ec.europa.eu/unitedkingdom) Vocab Express is an engaging, web-based vocabulary learning application for schools which motivates students into learning foreign languages independently.
