NEVADA CHALLENGE

Dear Parents:
In fourth grade your child will participate in the Nevada Challenge which requires them
to recite the Nevada Preamble, State Song, State Facts, and Counties & Seats by
memory. Your child will receive a social studies grade for each portion. Following is a list
of dates they should complete the four requirements:

Counties and Seats
Your child has received a packet that includes information on the Nevada Challenge requirements. This is always a
fun and informative learning task for them to complete as they will receive a special acknowledgement at the end
of the year. We encourage you to help them master this information at home!
This packet includes examples of how your child is assessed on the written portions of the Nevada Challenge.
You may want to make photocopies of these tests for them to practice at home. We will test on Fridays
beginning in September. Students who are ready to test on any portion of the challenge may do so on a
Friday. Students must go in the order listed above but are free to move on to the next challenge as soon
as they have completed the previous challenge. Students not completing the challenge by the due date will
have a letter grade drop for each week they continue not to pass that portion. For example, if a student
completes a challenge within one week after its due date, the best they can receive is a ‘B’ in the grade
book for that assignment. It is suggested that students listen to the state song on a web-site while reading
the words to learn the song in its entirety. They may sing that portion of the challenge.
Please sign & detach the bottom portion of this page to acknowledge your receipt of the NV Challenge Packet
and the important due dates.
Thank you for your support!

“Home Means Nevada”
Written & Music by Bertha Raffetto
Verse 1
Way out in the land of the setting sun,
Where the wind blows wild and free,
There’s a lovely spot, just the only one
That means home sweet home to me.
If you follow the old Kit Carson trail,
Until desert meets the hills,
Oh you certainly will agree with me,
It’s the place of a thousand thrills.
Chorus
Home means Nevada
Home means the hills,
Home means the sage and the pine.
Out by the Truckee, silvery rills,
Out where the sun always shines,
Here is the land which I love the best,
Fairer than all I can see.
Deep in the heart of the golden west
Home means Nevada to me.
Verse 2
Whenever the sun at the close of day,
Colors all the western sky,
Oh my heart returns to the desert grey
And the mountains tow’ring high.
Where the moon beams play in shadowed glen,
With the spotted fawn and doe,
All the live long night until morning light,
Is the loveliest place I know.
Chorus
Home means Nevada
Home means the hills,
Home means the sage and the pines.
Out by the Truckee’s silvery rills,
Out where the sun always shines,
There is the land that I love the best,
Fairer than all I can see.
Right in the heart of the golden west
Home means Nevada to me.
