After delivering countless educational programs without a dedicated classVisitor at opening of A Kiowa’s Odyssey room, the museum’s Outreach Program began its 24th season offering classes in the newly opened Mumper-Stuart Education Center. Through the creation of this ideal teaching space, the outreach staff expands the nature and scope of its programs to members of the Dickinson College and central Pennsylvania community. The Trout Gallery is most thankful for the generous donation that made this new programming space possible. To inaugurate the new educational classroom, The Trout Gallery opened its exhibition series with A Kiowa’s Odyssey: A Sketchbook from Fort Marion. Similar to Writing on Hands: Memory and Knowledge in Early Modern Europe before it, this exhibition, curated and organized by The Trout Gallery, brings to light innovative scholarship through an important exhibition catalogue, a national tour, and an interactive educational Web site. The project also brings together local institutions as part of a multi-site exhibition and programming cycle among Carlisle’s three museums. The Trout Gallery continues to build its collections, particularly through the acquisition of more than 200 vintage World War II posters, through the generous gift of Robert and Francisca Kan. The museum’s ethnographic holdings were also enhanced with the addition of a remarkable series of carved wooden house posts from an ancestral lodge in New Guinea, the gift of long-time Friend of The Trout Gallery and supporters, Karina and David Rilling ’62. As The Trout Gallery continues to mount major exhibitions and acquire key works for its collections, it also continues to improve its exhibition facilities by replacing all of the museum’s lighting in the lower gallery. This completes the third in a series of four such upgrades which will enhance the viewer’s experience while providing the most conservation-sensitive lighting possible. Such advances position The Trout Gallery as a leader among its peer institutions and prepares the way for another wave of major strides as it approaches its 25th Anniversary in 2008–2009. The Trout Gallery promises another year of exciting and important exhibitions and related events. If you have not already joined the Friends of The Trout Gallery, I invite you to become a member and share more fully in the museum’s continued and ever increasing success. Sincerely, Phillip Earenfight THE Exhibitions 2007–2008 A Kiowa’s Odyssey: A Sketchbook from Fort Marion September 7–January 23 O n September 7, The Trout Gallery opened its doors to the much anticipated A Kiowa’s Odyssey: A Sketchbook from Fort Marion. This major touring exhibition reunites parts of a sketchbook that were made in 1877 by Etahdleuh Doanmoe, a Kiowa who was among the 72 Indians captured during the Red River Wars and incarcerated for three years at Fort Marion in the coastal town of St. Augustine, Florida. The sketchbook contains drawings that chronicle the Indians’ surrender at Fort Sill (Indian Territory), their traumatic journey by train to Fort Marion, and their time at the fort, where, under the direction of Lt. Richard Henry Pratt, Etahdleuh and his fellow captives were “educated” and “civilized” according to Western models. Pratt’s efforts at Fort Marion became the basis for his work at the Carlisle Indian School, which he founded in 1879. This exhibition is organized in cooperation with the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Yale University. EXHIBITION ITINERARY The exhibition will travel to sites associated with the lives of Etahdleuh Doanmoe and Richard Henry Pratt. After opening in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, home to the Carlisle Indian School, which was founded by Pratt and where Etahdleuh spent considerable time, the exhibition travels to Jacksonville, Florida, which is near Fort Marion and was one of the principal transfer points along the journey to the coast. The third venue will be in Canyon, Texas, where Etahdleuh and his fellow Kiowa camped during the winter of 1875 prior to their arrest and transfer to Fort Sill, nearby. The exhibition closes at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, home of the Richard Henry Pratt Papers. The objects gathered here were originally made and used in Asia. Many were dedicated to the practice of religious belief in homes or temples or other sacred places. Others provided entertainment to villagers or townspeople, enabled merchants to weigh goods for sale in the marketplace, educated people about great events of the moment, or brought to mind bygone and better days. The exhibition is curated by Samuel Parker, from the University of Washington, in conjunction with David Strand, James Bowman ’92, and Jennifer Huang ’08. Exhibitions 2008–2009 To celebrate The Trout Gallery’s 25th Anniversary, the museum is planning a number of special exhibitions and events. Watch for announcements and invitations. Gordon Parks: Crossroads September 5–October 18, 2008 Opening Reception: Friday, September 5, 5–7 p.m. T he Trout Gallery is proud to host a retrospective exhibition of the photographs of Gordon Parks (1912–2006), one of the nation’s most important chroniclers of the 20th century. Photographer, poet, novelist, composer, musician, and filmmaker, Parks spent a lifetime shattering barriers in the pursuit of truth, beauty, social justice, and artistic expression. Parks became the first black photographer to join the Farm Security Administration (FSA), shortly after which he made his signature image American Gothic. In 1949, he became the first black staff photographer at Life magazine, where he continued to work on assignment for the next quarter of the century. He documented the gang wars of Harlem and the nascent Black Muslim movement, worked in fashion and commercial as well as fine art photography. He helped found Essence magazine and directed the film Shaft. He received numerous awards including the Jackie Robinson Lifetime Achievement Award, the NAACP Hall of Fame Award, the National Medal of the Arts, as well as an honorary doctorate from Dickinson College. All photographs are courtesy of the Gordon Parks Foundation and the Howard Greenberg Gallery. The show is organized by art2art Circulating Exhibitions. American Gothic, gelatin silver print, 1942 Joyce Kozloff October 31–January 10, 2009 Opening Reception: Friday, October 31, 5–7 p.m. I Targets, acrylic on canvas with wood frame, 108 in. dia. n this selection of works, Joyce Kozloff considers relationships of power and global politics through the imagery of maps and cartography. Her paintings, some of which cover spherical surfaces and globes, often resemble maps from antiquity as well as from the age of exploration and examine issues of territorial conquest, identity, and the topography of power. Although her works trace physical boundaries and recognizable geographic borders, such territorial references act as metaphors for people, culture, body, and mind. Kozloff has been active in the women artists’ movement since the 1970s, is a peace activist, and is a member of the New York-based collective Artists Against the War and a founding member of the Heresies publishing collective. Her awards include the Jules Guerin Fellowship and the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome. She has works in the Brooklyn Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Jewish Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Fogg Art Museum, Yale University Art Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, M.H. de Young Memorial Museum, among many others. She shows widely in the United States and Europe, most recently at the Galleria Michela Rizzo, Venice. 7 Outreach Program Highlights of the 2006–2007 Season D Outreach ickinson College professors from the Religion, History, Spanish, German, Art, English, and Theatre & Dance departments brought their students to programs created specifically for their individual courses. Collaborating with each professor, Wendy Pires, Curator of Education, designed multi-disciplinary sessions involving student participation and hands-on activities. In further service to Dickinson and the community, Outreach efforts include offsite and one-of-a-kind events. This past year saw architectural walks for high school Latin classes, a walking tour through “Old Mooreland” for a Dickinson first-year seminar, a three-day workshop with visiting Cameroonian artist Max Lyonga for the YWCA after-school program at Hope Station, a credit-earning workshop for area art teachers, kite-making at the Amani Festival, the induction ceremony program for the Carlisle High School National Art Honor Society, a printmaking workshop for the Women’s Symposium, and the study of hex signs by school groups, culminating in chalk designs that graced the Dickinson sidewalks. 8 Dickinson students analyze the religious meaning in the prints of Albrecht Dürer and Rembrandt van Rijn as they relate to their course Visions of the Apocalypse. Students from Michelle Shupp’s Latin class at Mechanicsburg High School practice writing cuneiform. Children from the Hamilton Elementary School in Harrisburg made cityscapes as a final art project for Images of Industry and Urban Life. Students from St. Patrick’s School study key concepts associated with religious imagery in prints from the age of Albrecht Dürer and Rembrandt van Rijn. Area school children tackled concepts of mass production and the casting process in programs for the exhibition Anthony Cervino: Sculpture. Outreach Program The Mumper-Stuart Education Center opens at The Trout Gallery Michael and Laura Mumper cut the ribbon with assistance from Wendy Pires. On September 7, 2007, Laura and Michael Mumper cut the ribbon at the entrance to the Mumper-Stuart Education Center and opened the door to the next phase in the museum’s award-winning Outreach Program. For the past 23 years, the Outreach Program has operated without a designated site, conducting many art activities and educational programs outside of the museum’s entrance, in the lobby of the Weiss Center. Although the absence of proper classroom facilities did not prevent the Outreach Program from providing superior quality programs to area school children, it certainly did not make matters easy. With the new center, the Outreach Program can better serve the needs of its visitors, offer a wider range of educational experiences, and provide Outreach Program student interns with a professional working environment where they can develop and refine their skills as they work toward a career in museum education. The new center represents a major step forward in The Trout Gallery’s ability to serve the Dickinson College and central Pennsylvania communities. The MumperStuart Education Center is funded by a gift in memory of Evalyn Mumper Stuart, Harvey M. Stuart ’34, and George B. Mumper, class of 1884. Mary Stuart Smith ’69, Wendy Pires, and student intern Anabella Atach ’08 Student interns, past and present: Cassie Lynott ’06, Anabella Atach ’08, Selwyn Ramp ’08, Katlin Harker ’07, Danielle Gower ’05, Emma Bennett ’10, Allison Reilly ’08 Harvey and David Smith relate stories about their grandparents, Evalyn M. Stuart and Harvey M. Stuart ’34, and their great-grandfather George B. Mumper, class of 1884. 9 Outreach Program Student Interns E ach year, three to four Dickinson students with varying backgrounds are chosen for internships in the Outreach Program. Interns become familiar with museum education principles and standards—as determined by the American Association of Museums—as well as best practices for museum educators. Within that context, interns are trained to identify learning goals for a variety of age groups, design age-appropriate activities to support the goals, create teaching materials, and lead activities for school groups. An impressive percentage of Outreach Program interns capitalize on the skills acquired during their internships. Carrie Berger Posey ’02, graduate student in museum studies, University of Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma I had an incredible experience during my time as an Outreach Intern. It was while working at The Trout Gallery that my love of teaching children and adults in a museum setting was cemented. I received invaluable on-the-job training as I was able to participate fully in the concept, preparation, and implementation of our education programs, even leading groups myself. This prepared me to work as a museum educator in southern California, Virginia, and central California. I was just accepted into the Master of Museum Studies program at the University of Oklahoma, College of Liberal Studies, and am grateful for the time I spent as an Outreach Intern, as it helped me to discover my passion and skills in museum education. Cassie Lynott ’06, Volunteer and Tour Coordinator in the Education Department, National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, DC As a student at Dickinson College, I spent many mornings and afternoons at The Trout Gallery assisting the Outreach Program. I discovered a passion for curriculum-based arts education and interdisciplinary teaching methods. Museum education became a career goal, and my practical experience working with the staff of The Trout Gallery gave me the skills I needed to become a successful candidate for a position in the Education Department of the National Museum of Women in the Arts. I am currently the Volunteer and Tour Coordinator at NMWA, and work closely with docents responsible for guiding student and adult tours and volunteers who assist with the variety of programs offered by the Education Department. The training I gained from working with The Trout Gallery Outreach Program allowed me to develop teaching skills and strong educational standards that assist me greatly in my current museum education endeavors. 10 Lacey Gilbo ’03, Program Director, Ketchikan Arts, Ketchikan, Alaska As an Art History major, I was frequently asked, “What are you going to do with THAT major?” During my senior year, I was accepted as an Outreach Intern at The Trout Gallery. I fondly recall the Life in the Ancient World exhibit, for which I helped design programs, activities, and materials to draw parallels between modern and ancient culture and to demonstrate the value and relevance of ancient works. At the time, this was one of the most successful outreach programs, reaching record audience numbers. As an Outreach Intern, I gained valuable experience easily applied to the working world, such as program development, interpersonal skills, and basic time-management. I now work in Ketchikan, Alaska (one of “America’s 100 Best Small Art Towns”) as the Program Director for a very active local arts council where I am responsible for gallery outreach, workshop and residency coordination, and a summer arts camp. I am certain that my Trout Gallery experience gave me an advantage in achieving my current position. Lynnéa Sparandero ’04, Assistant to the Director of Development, Washington National Opera, Washington, DC I worked with the Outreach Program from the spring of my freshman year through my senior year. I started doing small jobs and gradually moved up to teaching programs. One of my favorites included the Harold Edgerton photography exhibition where we taught the physics of motion through a strobe light and digital camera activity. Over the course of many exhibitions, I learned how to relate art to other subjects, such as math, science, history, literature, and languages. I incorporated this skill into my English major by researching poetry, plays, and novels and their relationship to art, especially while studying abroad in East Anglia, England. I am now the Assistant to the Director of Development at the Washington National Opera where I find ways of relating the arts, particularly opera—which is one of the most inaccessible art forms today—to our patrons. I credit my “mentors” in the Outreach Program at The Trout Gallery for teaching me how to do this. Collections Management Facilities During the summer of 2007, much needed upgrades to the lower gallery lighting system were completed. This renovation involved removing and replacing the balance of the old track remaining from the previous phase of this multi-year process. The new system will allow for the use of museum-grade lamps and filters that will enhance the installation of future exhibitions. The final phase of these lighting upgrades will take place during the summer of 2008, when all of the lighting systems in the upper gallery and atrium are replaced. The recent addition of large-scale sculptural works, ethnographic material, and pottery have also highlighted the need for a new storage space to house our growing collection. Having focused our recent efforts to expand our storage for two-dimensional works, the 3-D collection now needs to be addressed. Possible locations for a new vault space are under consideration. Collection The Trout Gallery received over 309 gifts during 2006, the largest percentage of those coming from Robert and Francisca Kan. This gift greatly increases our holdings of war-related art and provides Dickinson students and the local community with another excellent resource for research and education. Gifts from Eric Denker ’75, from 2006 and early years, provided the basis of the Art Historical Methods exhibition, Inked Impressions: Ellen Day Hale and the Painter-Etcher Movement. The inclusion of one of Hale’s plates and her etching needle, both gifts from Eric Denker this past year, augmented the museum’s holdings by this noted American artist. Work continues on preparing the Asian collection for the upcoming exhibition in spring 2008. Samuel Parker returned to campus this past semester to meet with faculty about how to use the exhibition in classes and how to select objects for inclusion in the show and accompanying catalogue. A major supporter of Dickinson College, Walter served as member and president of the Alumni Council, an alumni trustee, a member of the Board of Trustees, a lifetime member of the Friends of the Library, and a board member of the Friends of The Trout Gallery. Throughout his life, Walter recognized the importance of historic materials and worked to build the college’s collections of rare books, art, and artifacts. From his longtime residence in Washington, DC, Walter worked tirelessly on behalf of the college, always striving to grace the institution with colonial-era manuscripts and letters and to promote the accomplishments of his alma mater among his wide network of friends and associates. While the most visible reminder of Walter’s support for the college is the bronze statue of Benjamin Rush, which he helped acquire, Walter also bequeathed to The Trout Gallery a pair of early American colonial portraits by John Hesselius and Adolf Wertmuller. The Trout Gallery is most fortunate to have received Walter’s support and guidance over the years. 1934–2006 Friends Bus Trip to the Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery O n November 5, 2006, the Friends of The Trout Gallery hosted a bus trip to the newly renovated Smithsonian American Art Museum and the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. Visitors were welcomed to the newly installed collections by Eleanor Harvey, Chief Curator of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, who provided a warm introduction to the museum. Among the highlights in the museum are portraits of Benjamin Rush, Benjamin Franklin, and John Dickinson. Plans are under way for a bus trip this spring, so watch your mail for further notice and join us at our next event. Friends 19 Friends of The Trout Gallery The Trout Gallery gratefully recognizes individuals and organizations who support the museum through contributions of service, funds, or works of art during the 2006-2007 fiscal year.
