“I like to focus on what I’m doing,”
said Mr. Hollister, who was diagnosed with
Alzheimer’s disease almost eight years ago. “I
enjoy being able to do something that someone
else may like.”
Mr. Hollister, who has been a participant
in the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater
Cincinnati Memories in the Making® art
program at the Hyde Park Health Center since
2005, said he prefers painting landscapes.
Fred Hollister holds one of his art pieces.
One of his landscape paintings serves as
the featured cover design for the invitations to the Chapter’s Art of Making
Memories benefit that will be held at the Taft Museum of Art in Cincinnati on
Thursday, May 3.
As in the past, the benefit will feature framed artwork painted by
individuals who participate in the Alzheimer’s Association Memories in the
Making® (Memories) program, an art program that provides individuals in the
early to middle stages of dementia the opportunity for self-expression through
the visual arts. The Greater Cincinnati Chapter currently has 12 Memories
program sites that serve approximately 90 participants weekly.
In addition to select Memories artwork being up for bid, the benefit will
feature exciting silent and live auctions, live entertainment, dinner by the bite,
wine and beer as well as an optional cash bar.
Last year, a capacity crowd of nearly 350 guests helped to raise more than
$110,000 for local programs and services as well as research on a national level.
The David Kohnen family will serve as honorary chairs for the event.
Rodney Lear is chairperson for the event planning committee.

like life. And often the back-stories of
players, and their coaches, are as fascinating as the game itself.
As we go to press with this edition of Cornerstone, Pat Summitt’s
University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers are among the elite
eight in the women’s tournament.
But whether Coach Summitt and her team win another
championship is less compelling than the fact that she continues
to compete, those amazing blue eyes blazing, despite her
diagnosis last August of early-onset Alzheimer’s.
In that sense the coach plays out, in a very public arena,
the private stories of millions – including those people we know
and love – who heroically battle dementia every day. No matter
what stage of the disease, they are steadfast. No matter how
tough it gets, they fight on.
And they are inspirational.
At the Association we spend many hours planning and
executing events, programs and services to achieve our mission.
As we begin the last quarter of fiscal year 2012, the staff is
updating our three-year strategic plan, determining the next
12-month budget, creating action plans and setting aggressive
goals to present to the board.
Why is it critical that we set and achieve big stretch goals?
Because, in Pat Summitt’s words, “People who want (to win) a
championship, stand up and go for it. They don’t back away.
They aren’t nervous…they’re excited. And they have a big, ole’
attitude.”
In other words, winners don’t give up – they step up.
Your fellow team members know what we need to do to
win. We have great expectations and challenging metrics for
each strategic plan goal to help us keep score.
• Enhance care and support of those with Alzheimer’s and
their families. Conduct outreach with neurologists, geriatricians,
internists, psychiatrists and family practice physicians. Increase
use of our 24/7 Helpline. Offer new and innovative education,

• Accelerate research by engaging more individuals in
global research, including participation in Alzheimer’s disease
science priorities like TrialMatch, the Alzheimer’s Association

Advance Alzheimer Research and Treatment.
• Increase concern and awareness, expanding our
community’s knowledge of the urgency of the Alzheimer’s
epidemic and providing visibility of the disease through all
media, including growing participation in our Walks to End

Longest Day
Now is the time to show those facing Alzheimer’s
disease that they are not alone. On June 20, the
longest day of the year, teams across the northern
hemisphere will participate in a sunrise-to-sunset
endurance activity to honor the courage, dedication
and strength displayed by people with Alzheimer’s and
their caregivers, and to raise funds for programs and
research. Join us to be a part of this inaugural event.

New Memories Program Offers Time for Caregivers
he Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Cincinnati is introducing a new program
that focuses on relieving caregiver stress. Time for Caregivers is designed for
family members of the diagnosed individuals who participate in the Memories
in the Making® sessions.
The goal of Time for Caregivers is to provide stress relief to family caregivers
through supportive interventions, education, activities and time away from caregiving
responsibilities. In this program, caregivers will have the option to participate in a
variety of activities focused on health and wellness, personal enrichment, supportive
fellowship and creative expression, or the caregivers may choose to spend that time
engaging in their own pursuits, such as visiting friends, running errands or having quiet
time alone. A social worker facilitates the caregiver sessions, and other expert facilitators
will be included periodically to present special programming such as meditation, yoga
or other enrichment programs.
Memories in the Making® (Memories) is an interactive program designed
for persons in the early to middle stages of Alzheimer’s disease, or another form of
dementia, that encourages self-expression through the creative arts. In this program,
a person with diminished verbal and organizational skills can engage in productive
interaction with others via the visual arts, music or writing projects that offer an
opportunity for expression. The program provides meaningful activities and a safe
place for the participants to express themselves when words may have failed them.
Memories is based on the premise that there are no mistakes in creative expression, and
the process of creating art, music or writing is a powerful means of engaging affected
individuals throughout the disease process. These creative sessions are conducted by
trained facilitators with a background in the arts and a knowledge of dementia and its
effects on the abilities of diagnosed individuals.
Both programs are held once a week for 10–12 weeks. The session length is
90 minutes. Initial screening is required and space is limited. This program is free of
charge. Contact Joan Hock at 513-721-4284, ext. 104 for more information.

Volunteer Spotlight
Frank Finds Office a Most Comfortable Fit
For the past 18 months, Mr. Frank has been a weekly fixture at the office front
desk. In addition to overseeing the reception area and transferring calls, he assists
with data entry and various mailing projects. During the weeks leading up to the
Walk to End Alzheimer’s events, he does a little bit of everything, including folding
Walk t-shirts, assembling storage racks and forget-me-not flower displays.
“If it needs to be done, I’ve pretty much done it,” he said.
His work does not go unnoticed by the staff.
“We are so fortunate to have Gary among our volunteer staff at the front desk.
In addition to his infectious smile and fantastic attitude, Gary is also very computersavvy,” said Development/Volunteer Coordinator Diana Bosse. “Often when the
Development team has a project that involves more complex data entry, I’m asked,
“What time does Gary come in?’”
A native of Evansville, Ind., Mr. Frank earned a degree in Marketing from the
University of Evansville. After going through basic training for the Army Reserves
in 1971, he moved to Cincinnati and began a 33-year career at Procter & Gamble.
“It dawned on me that I should be giving back for all the support that I have
been given at no cost to my family,” he said. “Since being here, I’ve learned just how
dedicated and knowledgeable this staff really is and that the time I spend here allows
staff to do more important tasks.”
The Alzheimer’s Association of Greater
Cincinnati is fortunate to have hundreds
of generous volunteers serving in various
capacities throughout the year. Although we
cannot possibly spotlight every volunteer in

support and service. In this issue, we feature

F
or Gary Frank, there is no such thing
as a bad day when it comes to his
work at the Chapter’s Linn Street
office.
“It’s a bit difficult to describe but, for
me, it’s a feeling. It’s like wearing that
favorite pair of jeans that are broken
in or wearing your favorite boots. It’s
comfortable,” said Mr. Frank. “Plus, I’ve
never been around a more caring group
of people.”
Gary Frank
When Frank’s mother, Maxine, a resident
of Evansville, Ind., began exhibiting signs of dementia almost 11 years ago, it began
a long and slow process of learning and adjustment for the entire family. It also led to
contact with the Alzheimer’s Association, first with the Greater Kentucky/Southern
Indiana Chapter and later with Greater Cincinnati Chapter.
“During my mom’s continuing journey, the folks here on Helpline - Carolyn
(Ferris) and Marjorie (Rentz) - have been invaluable resources to me,” he said. “They
are sort of my insurance policy when things get difficult.”

for certain projects and tasks. To learn more about volunteer opportunities, please

2012 Alzheimer’s Facts and Figures Report Released
T
he Alzheimer’s Association’s 2012 Alzheimer’s
Disease Facts and Figures
provides a sobering look at the
growing impact Alzheimer’s disease
is having on caregivers and the nation’s health care system.
Released on March 8, Facts
and Figures confirms not only that
the number of people with the disease is growing, but that unpaid
care provided by family members
and friends is increasing at an even
higher rate. The new report also
explores the issue of those with
Alzheimer’s disease or a related
dementia living alone. Based on
U.S. Census Bureau data, approximately 800,000 Americans with
Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia live by themselves.
Among the report’s findings:
• There are an estimated 5.4 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease.
• One in eight people over the age of 65 has Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia. Nearly half (45 percent) of Americans over the age of 85 are affected by some
form of dementia.
• Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S. (fifth leading cause
of death for individuals age 65 and older).
• More than 15 million Americans provide unpaid care (totaling an estimated
17.4 billion hours) for a family member or friend with Alzheimer’s disease or a
related dementia.
• Most caregivers are family members who take on a tremendous financial, physical and emotional burden to help care for a loved one with Alzheimer’s or a
related dementia. Sixty-one percent of family caregivers rated the emotional
stress as “high” or “very high.”
• In 2008, average per-person Medicaid payments for beneficiaries aged 65 and
older with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementia were 19 times higher than
Medicaid payments for those without the disease.
• Most people survive an average of four to eight years after a diagnosis, but many live as long as 20 years with the disease. This prolonged duration often places
increasingly intensive care demands on family members and friends.
• Increasing evidence suggests that early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s and timely intervention is beneficial, both for people with the disease and their caregivers.
• Delays in diagnosis mean that individuals are not getting treatment in the earlier stages of the disease when they are most effective. They also miss the opportunity to make legal, financial and care plans.

Figures can be viewed at www.alz.org.
The Alzheimer’s Association’s Facts and Figures report is a comprehensive compilation
of national statistics and information on Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Since
its 2007 inaugural release, the report has become the most cited source covering the broad

J
ori Cotton, LSW, and Deb Benz, LISW-S, are the newest members of the Alzheimer’s
Association of Greater Cincinnati staff.
“We are very pleased to welcome Jori and Deb to our program team,” said Executive Director Paula Kollstedt. “Both bring a wealth
of professional knowledge and strong commitment to our mission.”
Ms. Cotton, who joined the Chapter in late
January, will serve as staff facilitator for the new
Time for Caregivers program. Time for Caregivers is a caregiver wellness and enrichment program
that will complement a new Memories in the
Making® program site this spring.
A life-long resident of Cincinnati, Ms. Cotton is a graduate of Ohio State University with a
degree in social work.
“My grandmother passed away from Alzheimer’s disease and my mom was her primary
caregiver, so I understand what effect it can have,” Jori Cotton
said Ms. Cotton.
In addition to her part-time position with the Alzheimer’s Association, Ms. Cotton
also works for the YWCA Battered Women’s Center. Her counseling work has included a
particular focus on creative interventions, such as poetry, writing and music.
Deb Benz was named Program Coordinator for the Southeastern Ohio branch in
February. She will assist Program Manager Melissa Dever in the delivery of Association
programs and services in a eight-county region
stretching from Brown County to Gallia County.
Originally from Hardin County, Ky.,
Ms. Benz is a graduate of Spaulding College and
the University of Louisville Kent School of Social
Work.
A long-time resident of the Greater
Cincinnati area, Ms. Benz has spent most of
her social work career focusing on geriatric care
management and counseling in home health and
dialysis settings such as Mercy Home Care and
Fresenius Medical Care in Cincinnati. She currently resides in Adams County.

Dance Delivers Valentine’s Gift
T
he “Cherish the Memories” benefit dinner and dance produced a Valentine’s gift of $8,600 for
the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Cincinnati.
Nearly 170 guests attended the seventh annual dinner and dance at the Cincinnati Airport
Marriott in Hebron, Ky. on Saturday, Feb. 11. The event featured dinner, music and dancing as well as
silent and live auctions.
For Cris Suesz, the loss of her father, Charles McQueen, to Alzheimer’s disease seven years ago
prompted the idea of putting together a Valentine’s Day dance to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association.
“We wanted to do something to remember him and to do something to help in the fight against
Alzheimer’s. What better time than to do something around Valentine’s Day,” said Mrs. Suesz, who
along with her husband, Joe, family members and friends, have organized the dinner and party in
Boone County.
To date, the event has raised nearly $50,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Cincinnati.
Concert Drums Up Support
A
fundraiser was held at the Syndicate in Newport, KY on November
4. Jim Courtney organized the event held during the DV8 and John
Waite concert. Guests of Mr. Courtney had access to a private party
room, hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar for the evening. Fifteen dollars from
each $20 ticket sold was donated to the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater
Cincinnati. In total, through ticket sales and other donations, over $700 was
raised for the Association.

ALZ Stars Prepare for Cincinnati Flying Pig
R
esearch shows there are as many as 5.4
million Americans living with Alzheimer's disease and that number is expected
to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050. In

68 seconds.
But you can do something to help end this epidemic. Become an ALZ Star by
joining the Race for the Brain Team and participate in one of the races offered by
the Cincinnati Flying Pig. Whether you’re a runner or walker, the Flying Pig has an
event for you. Participate in the 5K, 10K, half marathon, full marathon or 4-person
marathon relay the weekend of May 5-6.
There is no registration fee or fundraising requirement to join the Race for the
Brain Team; however, participants must pay their own entry fee to the Flying Pig.
Help lead the fight against this devastating disease. Register at http://ALZStars2012.kintera.org/Cincinnati and begin fundraising today!

Public Policy/Chapter News
National Alzheimer’s Plan Gaining Momentum
A
s the development of a national plan to address
the growing epidemic of Alzheimer’s disease has
quickly gone from discussion to action over the past
year, officials will now work their way through a myriad of
challenges in 2012 and beyond.
The passage of the National Alzheimer’s Project Act
(NAPA) by Congress in 2010 launched a coordinated
national effort to address the need for enhanced research,
care, institutional services and home and community-based
programs as it relates to Alzheimer’s disease and related
disorders in the United States.
By Steve Olding
Following a year of collecting public feedback to help
Communications
identify
priorities as well as the creation of a national
Director
advisory committee (that includes representatives from the
Alzheimer’s Association), the U.S. Department of Health
and Human Services (HHS) released a draft outline listing draft goals and strategies
for the National Alzheimer’s Plan. Among the goals is the development of an effective
treatment for Alzheimer’s disease by 2025.
Final decisions on the draft of the National Alzheimer’s Plan are currently being
considered not just at the highest levels at HHS, but in the White House as well.
Following a coordinated advocacy effort by the Alzheimer’s Association, President
Obama announced, in February, new efforts to support the fight against Alzheimer’s
disease, including immediately earmarking an additional $50 million available for
Alzheimer’s research through the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The administration also announced that its FY 2013 budget proposal
will increase funding for Alzheimer’s research by $80 million. An additional
$26 million in caregiver support, provider education, public awareness and
improvements in data infrastructure will be allocated to support the National
Alzheimer’s Disease Plan.
The additional NIH research funding will support both basic and clinical
research. Investments will include research to identify genes that increase the risk
of Alzheimer’s disease and testing therapies in individuals at the highest risk for the
disease. On the clinical side, the funds may be used to expand efforts to move new
therapeutic approaches into clinical trials and to develop better databases to assess the
nation’s burden of cognitive impairment and dementia.
For more information on the progress of the National Alzheimer’s Plan, please
visit: www.alz.org/napa.
While these are significant and encouraging developments, they only serve as a
starting point for the development of a nation-wide effort that will adequately address
the needs of affected individuals and their caregivers, both now and in the near future.
As an Alzheimer advocate, whether it’s in Washington, D.C., Columbus or
Frankfort, you can play a vital role in supporting our mission, with little time and
effort.

up as an advocate, please visit: www.alz.org or contact me at [email protected].
N
Advocacy in Action
early 100 advocates from across the Commonwealth attended the
2012 Kentucky Alzheimer’s Advocacy Day at the State Capitol
Building in Frankfort on Jan. 24. In addition to advocates meeting
with their elected representatives, the event included a program in
the capitol rotunda featuring several guest speakers, including Krya Elzy,
assistant women’s basketball coach at the University of Kentucky. Ms. Elzy,
who played at the University of Tennessee under coach Pat Summitt, spoke
about Ms. Summitt, her diagnosis of dementia and the way her former
players are uniting in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.
Volunteers from Page 1
“The generous donation of time, effort and treasure from all our volunteers,
donors and sponsors enables our chapter to better serve the thousands of families
in the Tri-state area who are affected by Alzheimer’s disease,” said Chapter Board
President Jane Fisher. “We are truly grateful for their generous support.”
Nancy Graeter received the Presidents Award, the chapter’s highest honor, in
recognition of her long-time and exemplary service to the Chapter. Rodney Lear
and Gemelia Tyler were also honored for their outstanding contributions.
Ms. Graeter, of Cincinnati, has served in a number of capacities for the
Greater Cincinnati Chapter, including as president of the Chapter’s board of
directors. Over the past decade, she has played a major role in the planning of
numerous fund-raising events as well as serving as a spokesperson and advocate for
the Association.
“Nancy is one of those exceptional leaders who inspires everyone around her.
She is a world-class marketer and mentor who makes sure that everyone she works
with knows they are valued and respected,” said Executive Director Paula Kollstedt.
“Nancy is passionately committed to our mission and our chapter is incredibly
fortunate to have her on our team.”
Ms. Tyler was presented the Elizabeth Bolles Outstanding Service Award.
A resident of Hillsboro, Ms. Tyler and her family have played a major role in the
success of the Adams, Brown and Highland Counties Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
“When you lose a loved one, you grieve. Some decide to do something
about the grief by turning it into hope. When Gemelia lost her mom in 2010 to
Alzheimer’s, she decided it was time to take on the disease that took Erma Kate,”
said Development/Volunteer Coordinator Diana Bosse. “Since then, Gemelia has
poured her heart and soul into raising money, raising awareness and furthering our
mission. Anyone who knows Gemelia, knows she never, ever stops advocating.”
Mr. Lear, Public Affairs Director for Hubbard Communications and host
of the weekly “Sunday Morning Magazine with Rodney Lear” that airs weekly on
WUBE-FM, WKRQ-FM and WYGY-FM, has been supporting the Chapter in
various ways over the past several years.
8 • Cornerstone • Spring 2012
In addition to serving on the board of directors, Mr. Lear has helped promote
various Chapter fundraising events and education programs through the creation
of public service announcements that have aired on Hubbard stations. In addition,
he has been an active volunteer at the Walks.
“Rodney rocks,” said Special Events & Outreach Manager Marcy Hawkins.
“His motivation and determination truly shines through with anything he does
for the Alzheimer’s Association. We are so grateful to have a strong leadership
volunteer, like Rodney, who is passionate about moving our cause forward.”

First Annual
Blondes vs. Brunettes
Created to have fun with the myth of the age-old rivalry between
blondes and brunettes, two teams of
women will compete in a flag football
game to raise awareness and funds in
the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. In
addition to the players, both men and
women can join as coaches, fans and
even cheerleaders.
