FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
Praised be Jesus Christ! “My life is my message” – Mahatma
Gandhi spoke these words years ago when asked to give a
message to the people of India. Jesus spoke similarly when he
said that people are best known by their fruits. Many parishes
have mission statements but hopefully people will know we are
Christians long before they have to ask. Relevant Radio speaks
of their mission as “narrowing the gap between faith and
everyday life.” What it all comes down to is our mission is
simply an expression of who we are. For example, we love God
and our neighbor because we were baptized into Jesus Christ,
“who came not to be served, but to serve.” It’s when we forget
our identity that our mission slowly but surely turns to serving
our own interests while simultaneously forgetting Our Lord and
His will for our life. Nathanial Hawthorne captured this in his
book The Scarlet Letter: “No man for any considerable period
can wear one face to himself and another to the multitude,
without finally getting bewildered as to which may be true.”
Because we’re human, we periodically need a shot in the arm so
as to deepen our conviction about who we are, where we came
from, and where we’re going. Parish missions were an annual
occurrence not that long ago and we’re blessed to be able to
host one every year (we alternate between parishes). This year
Christ the King has the honor of hosting Father Chris Alar, who
is a member of the Marians of the Immaculate Conception.
Father Alar is a very powerful preacher and will be sharing with
us the good news of God’s infinite mercy, which will very
beautifully help us to conclude this Jubilee Year of Mercy in fine
fashion. Father Alar will preach on Tuesday, Wednesday, and
Thursday (November 8th, 9th, and 10th) at Christ the King from
6:30 until 7:30 p.m. Please mark your calendar and join us for
one or for all three evenings. We expect a full church and it will
be a source of hope, which will be very welcome, given the fact
that the election will be taking place with the inexorable results
soon to follow. This parish mission is being well advertised all
over central Wisconsin, so you’ll want to arrive a bit early so as
to secure yourself a seat. Now allow me to segue to a couple of
other topics germane to life as we know it. I’ve been asked to
comment on whether it would be sinful not to vote this year. In
a nutshell, not voting is a person’s right, but one that should
only be exercised in extreme cases. If we absolutely cannot in
good conscience vote for either candidate, then we do have the
right to refrain from voting. Just the same, this right is also part
of our duty as good citizens, and it’s a right that cost many of
our finest Americans everything in order for us to have this
right. When both candidates are disappointing, we can still
choose the one who will do less harm. For Catholics, the issues
that have always mattered most have to do with respecting
human beings and God’s will for them. We know from Scripture
that murder is always evil. We also know that marriage requires
a man, a woman, and God. These are the issues that affect the
most people and getting them wrong does terrible harm to
human beings. Some will suggest that such thinking is overly
simplistic, but if we don’t get marriage and family right a lot of
avoidable hurt will ensue. It’s reasonable to claim that our
Supreme Court couldn’t possibly do any more harm than
they’ve already done (e.g. legalization of abortion and same-sex
marriage), but that fails to acknowledge the growing threats to
religious liberty. Please join us for the all-night prayer vigil at
St. John’s on November 6th. We’ll pray from 6:00 p.m. until
Monday Mass at 7:00 a.m. People who pray remember their
identity and their mission – and God knows we desperately
need these things at this time.
May God bless Father Chris Alar and all who attend our
wonderful parish mission on the Mercy of God!
Your friend in Christ,
Father Martin
Thanksgiving Food Drive: Ends this Sunday, Nov. 6th Please
bring your items by noon. Thank you for your generosity!
NOTES FROM FR. MARTIN
Holy Smokes! Thanks to everyone who came to our 4th Annual Pig
Roast. The night was once again a resounding success and that’s
thanks to our heroic volunteers, the KC Hall staff, and to the many
generous people who participated and supported the cause. We
raised $15,000.00 that evening! We’re sending $10,000.00 to the
convent to support our future sisters (and did you know that Faith
Becker won the gas grill?!). The rest will be set aside for a future St.
Francis Hall renovation. Insofar as vocations come from our young
people, and many youth events take place in St. Francis Hall, this is a
great way to build a culture that supports vocational discernment. At
this point it looks like we’ll take a year off from hosting the pig roast,
but if God wills, we’ll be back when the time is right.
Night of Adoration for the Election: Please join us at St. John’s as
we pray for the future of our country. We’ll be adoring Jesus in the
Most Blessed Sacrament beginning at 6:00pm on Sunday, November
6th and will conclude with Benediction at 6:50am (just before the 7:00
am Mass). You’re welcome to come at any time. In a time of
widespread confusion and unrest, we come together and beg Our
Lord to send us the Holy Spirit, that we might know God’s will and
have the courage to follow it. Sign up sheets for each hour will be
available at St. John’s beginning on October 29th.
Movie of the Month: The featured movie for Nov. 6th is Of Gods and
Men. Loosely based on the life of the Cistercian monks of Tibehirne
in Algeria from 1993 until their kidnapping in 1996. This is a tale of
Faith and Heroism! We will watch this on the big screen in the
Columbia room at 1:00pm. Feel free to bring snacks!
