Bull Music Center, Linfield College 900 SE Baker Street, McMinnville, Oregon 97128 Given by Dr. Anton Belov, Issue 18 Spring is the time we look at nature’s abundant renewal. I invite you to renew your own creative spirits as well by noticing and participating in the continuing education opportunities that abound this year. I hope you have taken or will take advantage of the events for this year. Fifteen Oregon members attended the NW Regional Conference and NATSAA earlier this month, including six members of our new Oregon Willamette Chapter! We learned many things about Contemporary Commercial Music (CCM) and heard many fine singers from our young artists. Frederica Von Stade is being sponsored this weekend at Portland State with a master class that should energize all of us. Our chapter will sponsor a master class and recital with Anton Belov the following week at Linfield on Russian song. I do hope to see you at these events. Join me and other members at our national convention in Chicago in July to support our NW NATSAA finalist, Rebecca Sacks, who also won the Dagny Gustafson Award at the chapter’s spring classical auditions. Congratulations to her and to her teacher, Ruth Dobson. (All three semi-finalists for the regional sing-off were Dobson students!) Our chapter awarded Rebecca $200 to assist her with expenses to attend the national convention. Musial Theatre November 5, 2016 Lewis and Clark 0615 SW Palatine Hill Rd, Portland, OR 97219 Classical January 2017 Pacific University 2043 College Way, Forest Grove, OR 97116 I encourage you to attend these and other workshops to keep yourselves engaged as learners as well as teachers. We are never too experienced (or old) to learn new repertoire, new teaching skills and to make new friends in our profession. To quote Rabindranath Tagore: “It was my songs that taught me all the lessons I ever learnt; they showed me secret paths, they brought before my sight many a star on the horizon of my heart.” Sing On! Bull Music Center, Linfield College 900 SE Baker Street, McMinnville, Oregon 97128 Given by Dr. Anton Belov, Associate Professor at Linfield College. Dr. Anton Belov, Associate Professor at Linfield College will give a masterclass working with selected singers on Russian art songs or arias. The masterclass will be followed by a recital with Dr. Belov and collaborative pianist, Susan McDaniel. Issue 18 About Anton Belov Born in Moscow, Dr. Anton Belov was educated in the United States, receiving a Bachelor of Music degree from the New England Conservatory, Master of Music from The Juilliard School and a Doctorate of Musical Arts from Boston University. He studied lyric diction with John Moriarty, Nico Castel, Corradina Caporello, Kathryn LaBouff, and Richard Cross. As a successful performer he has earned critical acclaim for his portrayals of characters as diverse as Count di Luna, Don Giovanni, Escamillo, Count Almaviva, and Eugene Onegin. His baritone voice has been praised as “rich and mellifluous” by the New York Times and his performance as full of "great emotional honesty” by Opera News. Equally at home with oratorio and concert repertoire, Mr. Belov presented over one hundred recitals throughout the United States, appearing at such venues as Carnegie Recital Hall in New York City and the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Mr. Belov is the first place winner of eight vocal competitions including the George London Competition, the Licia Albanese Puccini Foundation International Competition, and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions. His Libretti of Russian Operas in Word-for-Word Translation and IPA Transcription (Leyerle Publications, 2004) is used throughout the English-speaking world. Dr. Belov is an associate professor of music at Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon. The focus was on how to healthily train singers to move between vocal styles, including pop, musical theater, jazz and even rock. Blake Lewis, an American Idol runner-up, spoke and demonstrated on Friday evening. Dr. Kari Ragan and Dr. Norman Spivey gave presentations on registration adjustments for different styles and maintaining vocal health in different styles. Kari Ragan especially likes Inge Titze’s use of partial occlusion (straw method) as a means of returning the voice to balance. Congratulations for the Cascade and Willamette Chapter students who placed in the NW Regional Student Auditions and their teachers. The next step is national video audition submissions. Then, National Finals in Chicago. Saturday at 1:30 – 2:00 pm was a general meeting, with all chapters giving a short report. We were given a warm round of applause J. Saturday afternoon was a Master Class with Norman Spivey and then a Master Class with Mari Hahn (Alaska Chapter) on the Alexander Technique. Saturday evening was a banquet, and then the NATSAA finals. Ruth Dobson’s student Rebecca Sacks took first place in a grueling sing-off that went to a three way tie, which meant that the three finalists had to come back to the stage and sing one more piece at 10 pm, after a very long day. 1st Place: Rebecca Sacks 1st Alternate: Kari Burgess 2nd Alternate: Elizabeth Galafa First on Sunday morning was a ½ hour leadership meeting, with chapter representatives having an opportunity to ask questions of both Nancy Bos and Norman Spivey. Board communication over distance was discussed – both Alaska and British Columbia Chapters are spread out over a lot of geography, making in-person meetings difficult. The fact that NATS National has a Go to Meeting account came up and the question of accessibility was asked but needed checking. Also, the question of how best to utilize the non -profit status of NATS for the chapter level came up – with Norman planning on researching the topic. Nancy also referenced the NATS Chat, as a new on-line discussion forum that we can participate in. Specific experts and topics are chosen for each Chat, listed on the NATS website and Facebook page. You must sign up in advance to participate, as number of participants is limited. Back with the main assembly, we broke into groups for discussion. I joined the discussion on teaching transgender students I and brought back some literature and a list of resource websites – I can scan and email if anyone is IB High School MT Women 11 & 12 Second: Hannah Boyack Teacher: Allison Swensen-Mitchell Fourth: Sunday Manisto-Saari Teacher: Linda Appert Fifth: Andrea Reichle Teacher: Vanessa Jump Nelson IIA High School MT Men 9 & 10 First: Ryan Manhard Teacher: Beverly Park Corvallis High School Second: Fox Postier Teacher: Kara Quello IIB High School MT Men 11 & 12 First: Isaiah Zimmerman Teacher: Kay Joham Ulysses S. The final presenter was a jazz singer/ songwriter from Seattle, Greta Matassa, who offered some great tools for teaching scat singing. This conference topic was especially useful for the private studio teachers, who see a wide variety of ages and musical styles. It was also a good reminder that incoming college voice majors usually have other styles of singing in their background, and may be asked to sing other styles in the future, when they are earning their living.
