It is important to have the right nail nippers or clippers and a long
emery board or metal file.

How to File the Nails

We recommend you file your nails using one way action
pushing the file away from you.
After filing run you fingers over the nail to check there are no
sharp edges.
Regular filing of toenails can greatly reduce the amount of
cutting needed.

How to Cut Nails


Cut nails after bathing the foot as the nails are softer.
Cut nails with the tip of the nipper and make a series of about
three cuts across the toenail.
Follow the slight contour of the curve
of the toe.
Never cut the nail too short and never cut a “v” shape into the
nail.

How to Manage a Thick Toenail

To manage thick nails file the nail in a horizontal manner
across the surface of the nail to reduce the bulk.
This is particularly effective on fungal nails as they tend to be
fairly crumbly and soft.

When cutting the nail always look under the nail for any skin
tufts, this is when there is an extra tuft of skin that attaches
itself to the underside of the nail. In these instances leave
the nail longer.
If you do cut the toe apply pressure to stop the bleeding and
then apply a sterile dressing and check for healing 2 days
later. Seek medical advice from your GP if concerned.

Light Callus can be removed with a foot file or pumice stone.
Remember prevention is better than cure.
Apply thick cream to your feet daily if you can, avoid the
area between the toes.
If you can’t reach, use a spray on moisturiser or ask
someone else to help you with this.
Every little helps!!
Footwear – a good shoe has:
Lots of room for your toes
A cushioned sole
Soft uppers with no seams
An upper made of natural materials (eg leather)
A lace or a strap
A firm back to control the heel when walking
A heel height of less than 1.5 inches (3-4 cm)
Follow these tips for good foot health – from Society of
Chiropodists and Podiatrists.



Wash your feet every day in warm soapy water (don’t soak
them, as this might destroy the natural oils) and dry them
thoroughly, especially between the toes.
Trim/file your toenails regularly using proper nail clippers or
file.
Keep feet warm and exercise to improve circulation.
