Reading Workshop Theme: American Stories ­ native tribespeople Purpose: Three day close read focusing on the particulars of theme. Resources: Pre planned questions, Notes template, Legend of Keesh copy Assessments: ongoing formative assessments. Focus Lesson Guided Inst./Reading Collaborative Monday Accumulating details from the text to make inferences about the protagonist Keesh. Read the selection together as a class. Establishing annotations, Focus Questions ­ why did Keesh speak up at the village council meeting? use examples from the text. Tuesday Determining the importance of events and setting relating Keesh and the village Discussions of one of those events: Keesh’s speech to the council. Guiding questions Think pair share “What does the illustration tell you about the setting” Turn and talk How does Keesh’s relationship with his village change throughout the story? track key events from beginning middle end on graphic organizer. Wednesday Using text to answer questions about a character’s words and actions. This will take place as an example when answering the focus question. re­read with a partner, annotate info about keesh. I will pull lowest readers as a group. Friday Culminating writing task As the narrator states, "The Legend of Keesh" recounts how “Keesh rose from being an insignificant boy to becoming the head man of the village.” Consider Keesh’s journey from a young outsider to becoming his tribe’s Independent leader. How does the author develop the theme of leadership through Keesh’s journey? Use specific examples from the text, including direct quotations where possible. Writing Lesson Lesson Purpose Focus Lesson Guided Instruction Collaboration Independent Sharing Monday Getting Ready to Put Our Opinions into the World Students will learn to only share their best work with the world. I will talk to students how you never finish a paper or share it unless its your best work with correct spelling and other conventions. I will read a passage to them and have them correct all the errors with me. Students will trade their work and correct each other’s papers. Students will complete the writing task. Once student
s are done, they will share from the Good News Chair. Tuesday Hey World, Listen Up Students will have a celebration for finishing the opinion writing unit. I will have the students pick their favorite opinion piece they wrote Student
s will share their favorite opinion piece. Wednesday Christmas Essay Students will write an essay on whether or not christmas is the best holiday and why. I will show students how to organize an essay. Students will complete the writing task. Once student
s are done, they will put them in the hallway. Students will begin to write their essay and I will walk around the room to check their progress Thursday Opinion On Demand Students will complete the opinion on demand to show all their understanding of how to write an opinion essay. I will read the prompt for the on demand. Students will complete the writing task. Friday Good Citizens/ Holiday Party Social Studies Lesson Monday Project Guided reading groups will be assigned to a region. Each group will start off by partner reading within the group that region in the social studies book. Each group will be responsible for filling out a graphic organizer as they go along. Tuesday Project Finishing up the graphic organizer as a group and choosing a state from their region to go deeper on per student. Thursday Project Students will individually replicate the work done by the group for their own state using only resources from the book at this point. Each state is noted in the text.
