St Thomas the Apostle Parish Camp Hill No. 10 3 Fourth Sunday i n Lent 6 March 2016 Entrance Antiphon Rejoice, Jerusalem, and all who love her. Be joyful, all who were in mourning; exult and be satisfied at her consoling breast. When we sing to God in heaven We shall find such harmony, Born of all we’ve known together Of Christ’s love and agony. Entrance Hymn: Ashes We rise again from ashes, from the good we’ve failed to do. We rise again from ashes, to create ourselves anew. If all our world is ashes, then must our lives be true, An offering of ashes, an offering to you. © 1977, D R Gillard, Scripture in Song Then rise again from ashes, let healing come to pain, Though spring has turned to winter and sunshine turned to rain. The rain we’ll use for growing, and create the world anew From an offering of ashes, an offering to you. Communion Hymn: May We Come to Know the Lord Refrain: In the bread may we be broken. In the cup may we be out poured. May we come to know the healer, may we come to know the Lord. © 1978, T Conry, New Dawn Music First Reading Joshua 5:9-12 The people of God went to the promised land and there kept the Passover. In breaking the bread, in sharing the cup, may we be filled as we come to know the Lord. © 1988, D R Gagnon, OCP Publications Thanksgiving Hymn: The Deeper River 1. There’s a river running deep Within the silence of our souls, Where the quenching, healing waters carve their art. At its source a spring of living water Surging and sustained; It’s the voice of Jesus waiting For the listening of our hearts. Refrain: When the living waters flow in us When the living waters flow again, They will carry us, they will wash us down. They will quench our thirst again. 2. Sometimes the river of our life Winds wandering away, Sometimes the rapids tumble restlessly, Comes the time to stop and find The deeper river running strong, To drink refreshing waters And to hear the Spirit’s song. 3. Hear the call to thirsty people, There’s no need to thirst again. To the weary come beside still waters lie. Full of goodness, full of mercy, Our cup will overflow, When the call of that deep river Is a voice we’ve come to know. © 1994, Digby Hannah. Peter The Gospel from Luke is one which is very familiar to all of us - the parable of the Prodigal Son or Lost Son. One of the features in the parable is that we can easily identify with the story and choose which of the people in the parable we see to be like ourselves. We would all like to be the son who returns to the household and is welcomed back by the father. Sometimes though we are like the older brother who fails to accept the renewal of the relationship of his younger brother with their father. At times too we like to be like the father who receives and forgives others and restores friendships. However, the parable is not a play in which there are several parts but a teaching tool used by Jesus in defence of his companionship with tax collectors and sinners. This behaviour irritates the Pharisees and scribes. We tend to focus on the younger son who comes back to the father and is restored fully to the place as a son, but we tend to overlook the response of the older brother. He cannot abide the behaviour of his father for whom he has slaved on the farm. He sees himself not as son but as slave and he refuses to join in the joyful celebration in the house. He remains outside and rejects the reconciliation between his father and his younger brother. In these days of Lent where are we in the celebration of the Year of Mercy - sharing in the forgiveness of God or staying at some distance, just looking on?
