Spartanburg Methodist College — Spring 2005
SPARTANBURG METHODIST COLLEGE
Message from the President
I
n graduate school, I took a course that helped me fully grasp the
meaning of “professionals.” After weeks of class discussions,
readings, and research, I came to a simple but profound
understanding: Professionals know who they are, what they are doing,
and where they are going.
In unique ways, this definition also applies to colleges and
universities. To be effective in educating students, colleges must know
who they are. Without such knowledge, the institution’s mission is
unclear. And without a clear understanding of its mission, the
institution’s ability to educate students and plan for its future is greatly
impaired.
Institutions must be intentional in doing what is best to promote student learning. Institutions
that do not retain a sharp focus on their raison d’etre lose the ability to meaningfully engage in
educational processes with students.
Without an understanding of who they are and what they are doing, institutions will not know
where they are going. An old Chinese proverb expresses it well: “If you don’t know where you’re going,
any road will get you there.” The institution’s vision must build upon the history of the institution and
remain faithful to the values upon which it was founded. Armed with this knowledge and with a
resolute commitment to students, the institution must then develop its vision for the future.
In mid-February, our Board of Trustees, along with selected administrators and faculty, held a twoday Strategic Planning Retreat that refreshed our understanding of who we are and what we are doing
to promote student learning in and outside the classroom. As the retreat progressed, visioning
activities helped the Board gain insight into the future of the College. The participants came to
understand the challenges we face and the future we must pursue.
The Board approved the construction of Sparrow Residence Hall, a 119-bed facility made possible
through a generous pledge from Mr. John Sparrow in Lake City, S.C. Plans are being drafted to
expand the Buchheit Administration Building through the addition of the Vassey Information
Technology Center, a Center made possible through a bequest from the late Herbert and Rebecca
Vassey. The College will continue to beautify the grounds and upgrade facilities.
As we build for the future, we will expand our academic curriculum and degree programs. New
career-track academic programs, such as our emerging Paralegal Studies Program, will be developed to
offer our graduates the option either to continue their education at baccalaureate level institutions or
immediately enter the work force after completing the associate’s degree. Also, we will continue to
enhance student learning both in and outside the classroom.
As we approach our 100th year anniversary in 2011, we ask for your prayers and your continued
support. Even more, we invite you to become our partners in education. Together we will strengthen
our college and better prepare our students to become effective leaders in the 21st Century.
Sincerely,
Charles P. Teague
President of the College

SMC EXCEEDS FUNDRAISING TOTALS
n 2004, Spartanburg Methodist College received the largest amount of fundraising commitments in
its 94-year history. In the final year of SMC’s Vision 2005 $20 Million Campaign, the 2004 totals
are at more than $16 million. Dan Foster, Chairman of the SMC Board, said that 2004 commitments
totaled $4,383,213. Foster made the announcement, which topped the previous high of $3,991,524
by approximately 10 percent, at the local Donors Appreciation Dinner, held February 15.
I
Foster said it was a difficult fundraising year and that it took a number of year-end contributions
to attain success. While the increased fundraising has enabled the College to construct new buildings
such as the Bridges Residence Hall, it has also helped increase enrollment by 10 percent and improve
the quality of the Fall 2004 entering class.
President Charles P. Teague said that the $2 million challenge grant from Drs. Edgar H. and
Charlotte Ellis was very instrumental in helping realize the totals.
VISION 2005
THE COLLEGE
AT A CROSSROADS
stablished in 1911, Textile Industrial
Institute, the forerunner of Spartanburg
Methodist College, was founded to provide an educational opportunity for the ambitious, but financially disadvantaged. A pioneer
in work-study and the first to be founded by a
church organization (Methodist), this institution has provided an educational opportunity
to thousands during the past 94 years.
E
essential for success in their careers. The
Criminal Justice Program is another expression of the intent of the College to provide
creative educational opportunities for all of
those who have a thirst for knowledge, or
desire a more productive life in their chosen
vocation. Academic innovations have been
many and varied over the years, and new ideas
continue to evolve.
In 1942 the Textile Industrial Institute was
renamed Spartanburg Junior College, thus
reflecting the major emphasis of the educational program. From its very inception, the
College has maintained a distinct character.
Sound educational programming, a deep commitment to the financially disadvantaged, and
sensitivity to emerging needs have been the
hallmark of this institution. In 1974 the name
was changed to Spartanburg Methodist
College.
As the College’s programs have increased,
the number of persons who call on the College
for educational services has increased drastically. There has been a 47 percent increase
since 1999. During the past two years, the
enrollment has increased 17 percent – an
amazing statistic for a private college today.
The College now stands at the crossroads
again. New facilities, the renovation of older
buildings, and a stronger endowment are
essential for Spartanburg Methodist College
to continue its distinctive role of leadership in
quality education – a higher education for
anyone who desires it – regardless of financial
need, ethnic or religious heritage. As many
private colleges are settling for less service
capacity, Spartanburg Methodist College is
striving for the strength to ensure future generations the same opportunity offered their
parents and grandparents during our 94 years
of service. We cannot and will not
settle for mediocrity.
The Board of Trustees continues to insist on
emphasizing student financial aid, sound basic
education, and new program opportunities. No
student has ever been denied admission to
this college for financial reasons.
In addition to the basic two-year Liberal
Arts course of study, special new avenues
have been opened in adult education. The
Paralegal Program, recently implemented at
Spartanburg Methodist College, provides students an opportunity to build required skills

uildings on the SMC campus bear the names of
men and women for their invaluable contributions
to this institution. But former president George Fields
is especially pleased to have the street leading into the
campus bear his name.
“Streets go somewhere. People get on the streets
because they have plans to be somewhere,” commented
Fields, who, along with his wife, Mildred, unveiled a sign
October 21, 2004 designating the entrance as George
Fields Drive.
President Charles Teague recounted Fields’
accomplishments during his many years at SMC,
noting, “We are grateful for that and are impressed by
the many ways you brought quality into this institution
throughout your 21 years as president and your years
as director of development.” During the Fields
presidency, which lasted from 1976 to 1997, SMC added
numerous programs of study, including associate
degrees in Computer Science, Science, Business,
Information Management, Office Administration
Systems and a general education certificate for the
National Guard.

ness leaders, as well as friends and members of the
Fields family.
Fletcher Thompson, an attorney and former SMC
trustee, characterized Fields as a very focused person
who spearheaded the College’s first million dollar campaign. Terry Stephenson, professor of Mathematics and
Computer Science and Chairperson of the Division of
Math, Science, and Computer Science, recalled that
Fields was a very good steward of this campus. “He
always saw to it that the campus stayed in ‘tip-top’
shape,” Stephenson said.
Dan Foster, Chairman of the Board of Trustees,
commended George and Mildred Fields for their
energy, enthusiasm, resourcefulness and skill while
serving SMC. “In the many years to come, future
generations will come to know George Fields Drive as a
pathway to higher learning named for a true leaderservant,” said Foster.
Fields expressed thanks to SMC trustees, faculty
and staff as well as those from the community who
came for the ceremony.
(continued)
Fields was joined by several family members
during the ceremony.
During the same period, SMC embraced computer
technology, adding fiber-optic lines for computer
networking and phone service, and a campus cable
television system.
The campus underwent major facilities renovations
and additions, which included improvements to the Olin
D. Johnston Outdoor Athletic Facility: revitalizing the
C.B. “Slim” Mooneyham Baseball Field, construction of
the Fred Nash Soccer Field, and construction of the
William C. Buchheit Tennis Complex. Also, the Eva S.
Grant Softball Field was added to the campus in 1989.
In 1981, Vera Davis Parsons Hall was constructed.
During the 1980s and 1990s, H. Lester Kingman, Eliza
Judd, William G. Willard, and Charles P. Hammond
residence halls underwent major improvements that
included installation of air-conditioning, new windows
and interior work.
Other notable changes included expansion of the
Phil Buchheit Administration Building, improvements
to the Frank Walker Building and William S. Moore
Student Activities Building and improvements to roadways and parking lots on campus. Under Fields, SMC
also experienced increased use of computer technology for registration and other operations.

to celebrate this dedication were community and busi-

the ceremony
“I’m glad to have a time we can celebrate together a period in the life of the college for which I was a
part,” said Fields, adding that he and his family spent
25 happy years and enjoyed the privilege of living in a
unique learning, caring kind of community.”
Fields expressed thanks to faculty for working as
a team on behalf of the students. He also expressed
gratitude to the trustees who served during his tenure
and helped him accomplish widespread improvements
on campus.
“Thanks be to God for the faculty, staff and
thousands of students who walked through this campus
and into these classrooms and are now serving in many
wonderful places throughout the world,” Fields
commented. “I see them constantly and there is no
feeling of accomplishment like seeing a former
student doing well and making contributions to
society.” Fields also expressed gratitude to his wife,
Mildred, for being what he described as a “helpmate
and colleague who did wonderful things for the
College.”

autographed bat and ball. Wallace recalled that the
bat was a “game bat,” which he said was “as valuable
as gold.” Foster echoed Sanders’ remark that baseball
is about kids, emphasizing that SMC graduates should
vow to make a difference in the lives of others. Both
coaches spoke of Sanders’ major league record, which
includes a six-year record of 20-plus home runs and
20 stolen bases earned while playing for six different
teams.
Perkins joked about the time he and Sanders
shared a room at SMC and how he was a stickler for
cleanliness, but praised him as a “good Christian,
God-fearing man with a lovely family.”
Teague then invited Sanders and his family to
unveil one of the signs that mark the street which
runs from Grant Softball Field to Bridges Arena
within sight of the baseball outfield. Sanders, accompanied by his wife, Wyndee, and children, Cody, 12,
Carrigon, 7, Carson, 3, and eight-month-old Cooper,
unveiled the sign.
Sanders then had his turn at the microphone and
took the next few minutes to recount his time as a student and to praise Joyce, Fields and others for welcoming him to SMC and helping him realize his talents.
(continued)
“I never realized I had
the talent to be a
professional baseball
player until I came to
SMC and had the first
opportunity of getting a
scout to recognize my
talents.”
— Reggie Sanders
St. Louis Cardinals player
and former SMC Pioneer
Sanders then heard tributes from past and present
coaches and presidents, signed autographs, and chatted with former teammates and others about their
days at SMC during the late 1980s.
Those paying tribute to the 36-year-old baseball
standout included Dr. Charles Teague, SMC President;
Dr. George Fields, former president; Dan Foster,
Chairman of the SMC Board of Trustees; Lon Joyce,
former Pioneers Baseball Coach; Roger Ullery, former
Assistant Coach; Tim Wallace, current Pioneers
Baseball Coach; and former college roommate, Joel
Perkins.
“The most impressive thing about this gentleman
to me is that he is truly a role model for others,” said
Teague of Sanders, noting his faith and commitment
to his family, friends and alma mater. Fields, who was
president while Sanders was at SMC, characterized
him as a winner and a gentleman who has brought
honor to his college.
Former Pioneers Coach, Lon Joyce, said he was
impressed by Sanders from the time he first saw him
play high school baseball at Florence. Joyce
recognized Sanders as a top player a few years later
when he came to SMC for baseball tryouts. He praised
Sanders for continuing to be an outstanding
spokesman for SMC.
When Roger Ullery joined SMC in 1987 as assistant coach, he recalled saying to himself that Sanders
was a professional prospect. “Reggie played shortstop
for us that year and the hill behind first base looked
like a battlefield because of his ‘grenade launcher’
arm,” said Ullery, who quipped that Sanders “tore up”
a few batting cages as a Pioneer player. Ullery then
stated how impressed he was with Sanders’ integrity,
honesty
and
genuine
character.
Wallace and Foster both
recounted a recent episode
that best illustrates Sanders’
character. In response to a
June incident at Texas
Rangers Stadium in which an
adult fan knocked aside fourSanders signs year-old Nicholas O’Brien to
autographs for fans catch a foul ball, Sanders
after the ceremony emerged between innings to
present the boy with an
Sanders (fourth from right) with former Pioneer
teammates, Coach Lon Joyce (left) and Assistant
Coach Roger Ullery (second from left)
“What you’ve given me through the years is
priceless,” said Sanders of Coach Joyce, adding, “I
never realized I had the talent to be a professional
baseball player until I came to SMC and had the first
opportunity of getting a scout to recognize my
talents.” To SMC faculty and staff, Sanders said, “Your
schooling me and helping me along that journey – I’m
definitely indebted for that.” Sanders then thanked his
family for instilling in him values of being respectful,
humble, and gracious. He said that the most
important possession for today’s youth is character.
Throughout his professional career, Sanders has
continually reaffirmed his close ties with SMC through
participation in baseball clinics, helping the 1996
Pioneers travel to District Playoffs in Mississippi, and
donating financial gifts which were used to improve,
maintain, and expand outdoor athletic facilities on the
SMC campus. In addition to the Cardinals, Sanders
played eight years with the Cincinnati Reds, and a
year each with the San Diego Padres, Atlanta Braves,
Arizona Diamondbacks, and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Sanders graduated from SMC in 1988.

Smoak was the kind of person who left an impression on hundreds of student-athletes during his dozen years of coaching. He
also achieved an overall coaching career mark of 301 wins and
only 148 losses, and 205 wins over 127 losses with the Pioneers.
Under Smoak, the Pioneers also advanced to the NJCAA Regional
Tournament three times. Bowers said Smoak brought a wealth
of experience to SMC as a coach and educator who also served
his country as a Tank Company Commander in the U.S. Army’s
2nd Armored Division in Germany.
Family and friends are establishing the John McMahon Smoak
Memorial Scholarship at SMC, and are seeking contributors.
Bowers expects that the fund will reach the minimum level of
$10,000 in time for the College to issue scholarship assistance as
early as the fall of 2005. The SMC Board of Trustees has agreed
to match, from general endowment, every dollar contributed
once the fund balance reaches $5,000. They will continue to
match contributions until the total contributed to the fund
reaches $10,000.
The goal is that the fund would reach
$100,000 in five years.

SPARTANBURG METHODIST COLLEGE
TII Founder Recalls
Military Neighbor
The Textile Industrial Institute, now known as Spartanburg Methodist College, moved several structures from
nearby Camp Wadsworth after World War I. Pictured at left is the camp’s library, which was moved in pieces by
students two miles to the campus. At right is a student and his family standing in front of a row of tents moved to
the Institute’s campus for married student housing.
hen the United States entered
World War I, the face of
Spartanburg would soon be
transformed by more than 30,000 troops
who lived and trained at Camp Wadsworth
before shipping off to Europe.
Today, almost nothing remains of the
camp, which sat on land now bisected
by Interstate 26 and occupied by
Westgate Mall and the bustling commercial area along U.S. Highway 29.
W
“We found it difficult to teach
patriotism and discourage courtship
both at the same time,” recalled
Camak in his manuscript. Daily
bugle calls and columns of soldiers
marching along the public road
through the TII campus served as
constant reminders to students,
faculty and staff of the military
presence. He noted that the soldiers visited the campus canteen,
men’s dormitory, and would occasionally be found on top of a large mound
of granite rubble overlooking the girl’s
dormitory.
At the same time, the Textile
Industrial Institute, located across
the creek, felt the impact of the
camp’s close proximity. Dr. David
English Camak, who established
the institute in 1911 and moved it
to its current location shortly after
that, wrote about those war years
as part of an unpublished manuscript, “Singing Helps Win Battles.”
Camak’s story, contributed by
Dr. Katherine Davis Cann, professor of
History at SMC, is featured in When the
Soldiers Came to Town, the latest book to
be published by the Hub City Writer’s
Project. Shortly after the U.S. entered
World War I in 1917, Camp Wadsworth
was carved out of 2,000 acres of pine
forests located west of Spartanburg.
Camak recalled a soldier who
offered to marry one of the female
students. “We referred him to the young
lady’s parents,” he wrote. At Camak’s
request, mounted military police would

patrol the campus. Concerned over the
interaction of female students with the
nearby soldiers, Camak penned lyrics and
set them to the tune of the popular war
song “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary” apparently to discourage his young students
from surrendering to Cupid’s arrow.
Amazingly, Camak didn’t recall any
instances of “serious social indescretion”
during those years when soldiers
appeared to be everywhere.

When the war ended and Camp
Wadsworth closed, the Institute acquired
several of its structures and moved them pieceby-piece to its campus for classroom space and
housing.

Love and Graduation
(Tune: “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary”)
To Textile Institute one day a pretty maiden went,
The boys began to look at her most ardently intent,
They sang to her sweet songs of love and looked her in the eye,
She shook her saucy head at them and made them this reply;
Chorus:
It’s a long way to graduation; it’s a long way, I know.
It’s a long way to graduation, but I am bound to go.
Good-bye old flirtation, Farewell, Cupid dear,
It’s a long, long way to graduation, but I’ll be right there!
A handsome fellow, too, was found within the school one day,
And all the girls began to look at him as if to say;
“You’re old enough to settle down and have a happy home;
Just get it fixed and send for me, for I’ll be glad to come.”
An educated man and woman built a bungalow.
Said she to Jim, “Do you remember why I first said no?”
“’Twas you that said it while I thought it, for the road seem’d long
Do you remember how we sang in the old school days that song?”

MC acquired some new equipment recently which is very
welcome, but hopefully will never
have to be used.
Carol Shearin, Director of
Health Services, says the heart’s
rhythm is basically electrical, and
that when an individual experiences
an abnormal heartbeat, they can
lose consciousness. Having quick
access to an AED (Automatic
External Defibrillator) improves a
victim’s chance of survival.
Two AEDs are now in place on
campus — one in the athletic
training area and another at the
Campus Safety Department —
which, Shearin says, is available
24/7. The two AEDs are similar to
the units found at schools, shopping
malls and airports. A major benefit
of AEDs, according to Shearin, are
that they are designed for people
without a medical background. The
AED is capable of first detecting if
an abnormal heart rhythm is present, and has a digital display that
gives instructions on how to use the
unit. In addition to Shearin, all
Campus Safety officers, members
of the Student Development staff,
the Athletic Director and most of
the coaches are are AED-Certified.

Wilkerson Scholarship
Established
York community pays fitting tribute
to TII Alum, Area Farmer
1960s:
When Hickory Grove farmer
and 1938 TII grad William B.
Wilkerson Jr. died on Feb. 3, 2000,
his friends and colleagues from
the York Soil and Water
Conservation Commission wanted
to do more than donate flowers.
He had been a commissioner 53
years and was active in his
community throughout his life.
“We thought setting up a
scholarship would be a more
fitting tribute than flowers,” said
York Soil and Water Conservation
Commissioner, Bennie Copeland,
who served with Wilkerson in the
York County Soil and Water
Commission and also a graduate
of the institution when it was later
known as Spartanburg Junior
College. Copeland knew Wilkerson
to be a dedicated member of his
community who was also fond of
SMC.
Patricia Gallman Jones
(’61) of Anderson, S.C.,
writes, “I have enjoyed
being a high school substitute teacher during
my retirement years.
My two grandsons are
very active in sports. I
really enjoy going to
their football, basketball
and baseball games. We
live on Lake Hartwell
and have adapted very
well to the laid-back
life.”
Roland Smith (‘56) and
his wife Jackie live in
Marietta, Ga. Although
both are retired, they
stay extremely busy with
work in their church in
addition to volunteering
with the Red Cross.
They spent seven weeks
in Florida last year with
the Red Cross after the
hurricanes.
Kay Trail McBee (’61) of
Cross Hill, S.C., is
retired.
Benita Davis Stavely (’56)
and husband, Charles,
recently visited Raymond
and June Howard in
Jacksonville, Fla.
Carolyn Finch Fowler (’63)
of Spartanburg, S.C.,
writes that she has two
grandchildren: a two-yearold grandson and a fourmonth-old granddaughter.

“We tried for so long to raise
that money,” said Copeland. “We
pulled money out of our own
pockets. It took us four years just to get close.” Last
December during its regular board meeting, the
Commission received a late Christmas present — a
$2,000 donation from Sharon-based Palmetto Masonic
Lodge 289 — where Wilkerson was past master.
“It’s a wonderful feeling of accomplishment,”
Copeland said of the donation. “Now the fund is
endowed, and it can help students who need a little
help with tuition.”
“That’s what Wilkerson would have wanted,” said
Bill Summerville, a good friend of Wilkerson and
current fund-raising chairman for the lodge.
“He was a fine man who always put others ahead
of himself,” Summerville added. “He was always one
to help the community.” Wilkerson’s community roles
included everything from Sunday School teacher at
Mount Vernon Methodist Church to a stint on the
state’s board of directors for the South Carolina
Association of Conservation Districts. This is the first
time the York Soil and Water Conservation
Commission has established a scholarship.

James L. Rowe (’62) of

“We see this as a mild stepping stone,” Copeland
said. “Now, we can add to this and hopefully watch it
grow to $100,000.”

Deaths:
Mahlon H. Bagwell (‘38)
died in January of 2005.
He was the head baseball
coach at Erwin High
School in Asheville, N.C.,
for 12 years. Mahlon
was one of 14 children
and is a brother to
Neetum Bagwell. Coach
Bagwell taught at Erwin

— from 1967 until 1984.
He spent two years in
minor league baseball,
six years in the U. S.
Army during WW II, and
organized the Senior
Babe Ruth League
Baseball in Western N.C.
A reality in education is that teachers must learn how
to effectively work with students who have a variety
of learning disabilities. Students in Lynn Haller’s
Introduction to Education class find out first-hand how
seemingly simple tasks can be daunting to a disabled
student. They attempted to decode transposed numbers when solving mathematical problems. With cotton balls in their ears (above), they tried to listen to
instructions. With socks on their hands (below, left),
they attempted normal tasks such as writing.
Blindfolded (below, right), they attempted to spread
peanut butter on saltine crackers. Haller’s purpose is
to give students at least some idea of the challenges
and frustrations persons with disabilities encounter in
a classroom setting.

leven SMC students took to the kitchens January
19 to prepare soup for Second Presbyterian
Church Soup Kitchen. The day began with a service
challenge honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The work was divided among three groups of
students: one group went to the home of Dr. Katherine
Cann, another to Dr. Paul Lofton’s home, and the
third group went with Chaplain Candice Sloan to the
Presbyterian Student Association House. Each group
was given the ingredients and a recipe for vegetable
soup, which was later to be frozen and given to the
Second Presbyterian Soup Kitchen. Each group then
received $35.00 with the challenge to collect as many
non-perishable food items for the Soup Kitchen as
they could. After three hours, the students returned
to campus with approximately 133 cups of vegetable
soup and 1,780 servings of non-perishable food items.

Campus Safety Enters a New Era

hose who work around the clock to keep the
campus of Spartanburg Methodist College
safe and secure now have additional
resources available for effective law enforcement,
since the Campus Security Department received
approval from the South Carolina Law
Enforcement Division (SLED) to be classified as a
law enforcement agency.
Established as a law enforcement agency by
SMC August 4, 2004, the Campus Safety
Department now has the same authority as a city
police department. According to Chief of Campus
Safety, Greg Weisner, full-time officers on campus
are now licensed as state constables. This means
they have authority to make arrests, write traffic
citations, and conduct investigations off campus
when necessary. Other improvements to the
department includes the acquisition of two additional patrol cars.
T
“This transition greatly enhances our ability
to provide safety and security services to students,” Weisner said.
The staff has also grown. In addition to the
Chief, Campus Safety now employs three police
officers, five part-time security officers, several
security officers under private contract, and five
members of a new Student Security Corps.
Members of the Student Security Corps have
been carefully selected and trained to supplement
the full-time duty officers during day and evening
hours. They will patrol the campus, help with
parking enforcement, and participate in investigations.
Faculty, staff and students came together
Nov. 3 for a Consecration service at the Davis
Mission Chapel. Tony Fisher, Spartanburg’s
Director of Public Safety, gave a keynote address
and offered his congratulations to the officers at
SMC.
48
FRONTIERS MAGAZINE — SPRING 2005
In his remarks,Fisher urged students,
faculty and staff attending the ceremony to say a
prayer of thanks for officers who are looking out
for their safety during the day and throughout the
night, and to understand the difficulties officers
face in their job. Fisher also urged students to
respond with maturity to the officers and to
appreciate the job they must do.
