President’s Message
Hey Everyone,
I have a few things of importance for this month.
First, our own Stan Jackna, the Guppy Man will our speaker this month. He was just at the Michigan Guppy
Show a couple weeks ago and he will be talking about the experience and he has a lot of great pictures.
Secondly, this month will be the start of our election process. At this meeting we will be looking for people to
sign up and run for a position on the board and on committees. As everyone knows, we have a busy club, doing
a lot of different things, from food buys and fish buys to hardware buys. All the things we do take work and
some of the present board members may want a break, so if you’re interested, come to the meeting and sign up
to run for a board or committee position. Should you not be able to make the meeting and want to sign up,
please contact me by email or phone. [email protected] and 440-453-9738. The November meeting will
be the last time someone can sign up to run for a position. At 7:15pm, that night all registrations will be closed
and a vote held that night on all positions that have 2 or more people running. The new board will take over at
the January meeting.
Every position will be up for election and they are the following:
President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership, Editor, At Large, At Large, At Large
Those members who are heading a committee will also be asked if they want to continue as head of a
committee or if they too want to step down and we need a replacement.
Those committees are: Raffle, Speaker, Bowl Show, Refreshments,
We may also be adding another committee or two. As we do fish, food and hard good buys, we may look
at someone to research and oversee.
The board holds meetings each month, the same night as the regular meeting. We meet at 7:00pm
at the church. Committee members do not have to attend unless asked to attend by the board.
If you have questions about any of the positions, please see me. Every person on the board
will have some type of responsibility.

NEOfish is eliminating the use of Paypal and using Square solely since Square allows
for the club to receive the funds automatically and directly into its checking account. Square also offers the ability to build a store on-line as we did with the flake
food sale. Paypal does not, you have to use a third party web service to build the
store.

The Board meets before the general meeting at 7:00p.m. at the church as well. Even though you’re not on
the board, your are still welcome to sit in on the meeting. You would not have a vote but you certainly
could share some input. Per our Constitution and By-Laws, this is also the appropriate time and place to
air any concerns about the club. It would be helpful to first contact a board member to discuss the issue
but if you feel that the whole board needs to hear it then feel free to attend.

Hello everyone, hope all is well with you and your fish rooms. I
had the chance to visit the IFGA Michigan show last month.
Great stuff!!!!
So I get to do this months talk. Lori and I ventured out to the
land up north. Rain ☔️ going up . Rain ☔️ there, and rain back
to home.
We went up for a journey, to bring back a presentation to our
club.
We came back with more knowledge than before we left.
But before we left I got the chance to visit Brian and Pat’s
Shrimpton home. What a wonderful home!!! Brian has his fish upstairs and a fish room below. Wherever you looked there were
show fish everywhere.
Brian likes to do the beyond in the hobby. He's a master breeder
and super nice person!
Brian likes to take on projects, via tank or non tank. Rain water
for tank water. Heating for the room, which when you leave you
have a tan . Brian's room is right up there in warmth in a room.
Brian does love his live plants. Numerous tanks in the fish room
and daphnia outside. Brian loves the challenge above fish. How to
route a a rain water line from the basement to the backyard was
one of them. Brian has show fish. And I'm glad I had the opportunity to stop @ his and Pats home

Spawning a Killifish - Nothobranchus Palmqvisti
by Joe Doyle
The BAP program in my club has a peat spawning killifish class. Minimum requirements for
class closure are 1 soil spawner from the Old World (Africa), 1 from the New World
(Americas), and a total of 3. Always keeping an eye out for peat spawning killifish, I had
heard from friends who were members of the AKA (American Killifish Association) there
was a swap meet or box
sale being sponsored by
the MKA (Motor city Killifish Association) on
April 2nd, 2017. Made
plans to attend the
event.
For those unfamiliar, a
box sale may be comprised of breeders having a Styrofoam box full
of fish they are selling, they name their price, and there might be some trading and/or haggling involved with the sale. The sponsoring club asks for a nominal fee from sellers to help
cover cost of space. And sometimes an entrance fee is collected from buyers. Swap meets
could include anything aquatic related.
Took a couple fish friends along to the box sale. I bought a couple pairs of killifish over the
coarse of the first hour & talked to breeders about how they spawned & raised fry. The
swap ran from 9:00am to 1:00pm. After the first hour, we jumped in the car and went on a
self-guided tour of fish shops in the Detroit area. Took about 2 hours to visit 5 shops. Being
on a time limit, we headed back to the swap meet to see if any straggler sellers arrived late,
in which several did. Wrapping up final purchases, headed home with several new species,
one being Nothobranchus palmqvisti "Pangani, TZ-94-7". The line collected from Tanzania,
Africa in 1994, location #7.
Setup for spawning Nothobranchus palmqvisti, used a medium size critter container, compressed coconut fiber (fist full amount--always base this amount on the thought of how
www.neo-fish.com
much I want to wet in 3 months), and dechlorinated tap water. My tap is GH = 7 || KH = 4 ||
tds = 130. Gradually acclimated the new pair to my water for 15 minutes. Placed lid on critter
container and secured closed. All killies are escape artists, although I've never lost one from
jumping out of a critter container with a tight fitting lid. Some like to put a deli cup of coconut
fiber in the tank. I like to spread it all over the bottom so the fish spend more time spawning,
than trying to figure out how to get into the deli cup to spawn.
Fed the pair microworms and baby brine shrimp once a day. Water temperature was same as
room temperature which was 74F. After 2 weeks, setup a new medium size critter container
with new water and fresh coconut fiber. Moved the pair into the new quarters. Drained the
water and coconut fiber out of the pairs old breeding box into a baby brine shrimp net. Gently squeezed the water out so it was damp. Spread it out over a newspaper to air dry for
about 4 hours, 1" thick. Dumped the coconut fiber into a fish bag and marked bag with genus/species name, dry date, and wet date. Wet date for this species is 3 months. Closed up
the bag, kept in a dark place. After 3 months, dumped the contents of the bag into a small
critter container and filled it up with aged aquarium water from an established aquarium.
Anywhere from 1 hour to a week, fry appeared. Even saw new fry appearing after a month.
Evidently, eggs do well water incubating too. Fed an eye dropper full of paramecium once a
day for the first week, if I saw fry or not. If I saw fry, in start them on microworms, banana
worms, and Walter worms, in addition to paramecium. If I saw no fry after a month, the plan
was to dispose of the whole batch. This species was so prolific (50+ fry), I never had a bad
batch. The males of this species are territorial, but don't need separated. They just need kept
in a 10 gallon tank, moved after 2 weeks of hatching in small critter container.
Males start showing patterns in their fins after 2 weeks. Females have no pattern at all, light
tan in color. Fry are susceptible to poor water conditions. Kept water clean with 50% water
changes. Added baby brine shrimp to diet after 3 weeks. Slow growers, but the males colors
are just stunning. Kept temp at 74F, no heater just room temperature. Maybe they would
have grown faster at a warmer temperature. You'll have to experiment and let us all know in
a follow up article.
Very easy peat spawning killifish to keep & spawn. I'll be holding on to these for a while. And
hope to see more people spawning these stunning fish in near future.

Breeder Award Program (BAP) &
Horticultural Award Program (HAP)
BAP for August & September
We had a total of 29 items turned in for both months with quite a few "new" fish available. There was a really nice
selection, let's keep it up.
Reminder October and November will be the final 2 months to submit spawns for recognition in 2016. We do not
accept any for the Christmas meeting and the yearly awards will be passed out then.
HAP for August and September
We had 5 items submitted and once again October and November Will be the final months for submissions this year.
I had a problem with 2 of the entries from September so I have not (yet) been able to credit them and I will speak
with the member at the meeting to clarify a few things.
It is VERY IMPORTANT when submitting items for HAP (and BAP but it is usually less of a problem) that at the VERY
least you include the GENUS so I can look up the plant. In this case sp. Hawaiiian Eye netted me NOTHING other
than a couple of television series. Please also only submit Aquarium or Pond plants which can include marginals that
keep their feet in water and grow out of it. Other garden plants are not included and unless they are donations to the
club or a cause should be left at home. If you would like to bring some to share that is fine but they will not be auctioned off in the future unless they are donations.
I had planned on giving a summary of the other Plaque program this month but because it took me so long to aquire
the results from the August meeting it is not possible this month but it will be in next months bulletin.
Cheers,
John

Breeder Award Challenge Program (BACP)
The Challenge...
We will begin accepting fish for this program at the meeting April 15, 2016
and it will continue until the meeting on March 17, 2017 that will be the last
date for submissions. Any plaques that are earned will be awarded in April
2017 at our monthly meeting.
This program is an extension of our usual BAP program. The basic program
is still as it was and fish may be turned in from any category at any meeting.
As you look at the information below you will notice that there are very few
Central American, Tanganyikian, and 1 Malawian and no Victorian cichlids.
The reason for this is that basically we receive a lot of these and the purpose
of the program is to broaden your interests.
If there are fish you would like to have designated as a Target Fish, you may
submit it to me for consideration in person, by E-mail to [email protected] or even through Facebook. Please keep in mind that just because
you ask does not mean it will be. The purpose of the Target Fish is to challenge you to breed something a little bit harder. I may add new Target Fish
from month to month.
I challenge you to complete 6 challenges in the next 12 months. Those that
include at least 1 Target fish will receive a special award the others will get
the points. Each of the 6 MUST BE from a different group, in other words you
cannot turn in 6 Tetras. Again we are looking to EXTEND our interests. Only
1 item from each group will qualify for the Challenges, but of course you are
welcome to turn in any fish as usual for BAP points.
Finding Target Fish can be a problem. Places to look are Wetspot, Aquabid,
the Auctions and even the local Pet Shops. If you need help finding something ask me I may be able to locate them for you.
The Challenges are as follows:

Breeding and Growth Contest
Chuck Nowakowski has graciously donated an entire spawn of Green Terrors to the club for a Breeding and Growth contest. I have been holding them
for about a month now and I will bringing them to the meeting 6 per bag. If
you cannot attend the meeting and there are any left I will have them at the
Auction the following Sunday but I WILL NOT HOLD ANY, your best bet is to
attend the meeting. The first member to breed them and turn them for BAP
will win a prize of some sort. Then sometime in the future Bill Bilski will
schedule a special Bowl Show for you to bring in your best and the person
that brings in the largest fish will win a prize of some sort, we have not decided what the prizes will be so watch this spot.
I am willing to accept BAP entries from those that have already turned them
in if you would like to participate and already turned them in.

Auction Committee
Our action was a great success. We made money is all of our extra area such as
the Fish Raffle and Food. These are two areas that sometimes don’t make money.
So it says we had great food and great fish selection to try and win.
There were 844 items for sale, our Spring Auction had 925, or about 75 more
items in the Spring. We had about 55 sellers which is pretty normal, with Spring
auction having the same number. What was quite different in our Fall auction was
the number of buyers running a tab. This Fall we had only 54 buyers running a tab
vs. 86 at our Spring Auction.
