THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
NOVEMBER 17, 2013
WORDS FROM
ALL DAY EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
As we approach the end of the
Church Year, our readings take on
an end-time tone and focus. When we hear this
Sunday’s Gospel with its doomsday language, it is
easy to consider it a prediction of the future. But in
reality the events described had actually taken place
shortly before Luke’s Gospel was written. With the
destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple in 70 AD it
is easy to understand why Luke would put these
words in the mouth of Jesus and call upon Christians, especially those who had fled subsequent persecution, to remain faithful. Each age faces its challenges. We may not be facing destruction from invading forces, but the call to be strong in the faith is
given to us as well.
Begins after the 7:15 a.m. Mass
Closes with Benediction at 6:30 p.m.
FATHER MICHAEL
CHRIST THE KING
On Sunday, November 24th, our parish will celebrate the Feast of Christ the King with exposition
of the Blessed Sacrament following the 11:00 a.m.
Mass and at 3:00 p.m. there will be prayers and
Benediction. Each family in the parish is invited to
spend some time with Jesus in the Most Blessed
Sacrament.
BE AN ANGEL FOR CHRISTMAS
As Christmas rapidly approaches, there are
still many in our community who may not
have a Merry Christmas due to financial issues. We can make a difference. Please take an angel from one of the Angel Trees in the church vestibule, purchase the appropriate gift, wrap it and return the gift, with the angel securely attached. Cash
donations can be placed in an envelope marked Angel Tree Gifts which will be used to purchase food
certificates and gifts. Please donate only new items.
There is also a box near the Angel Trees for donations of new unwrapped toys. Please return all gifts
by Sunday, December 1st.
Pink Yarns - needy children
Blue Yarns - senior citizens
Golden Yarns - special projects
Red Yarns - residents of Allegheny Valley School
As you select a gift please remember to pray for that
person and thank God for all your blessings, especially His Son. Thank you!
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 19TH
Please come and spend some prayer time with our Blessed Lord!
COMMUNITY THANKSGIVING SERVICE
Tuesday, November 26th at 7:30 PM
Ken Mawr United Presbyterian Church will host the
annual Montour Association of Churches community
Thanksgiving Service. The churches of Kennedy and
Robinson Townships cordially invite the public to attend this special ecumenical service. The Rev. Robert
Downs, Parish Associate at Ken Mawr Church will give
the sermon; and the Thanksgiving offering will benefit F.O.R. in McKees Rocks. Music for the service will
feature a combined choir made up of choir members
from the area churches. Refreshments will also be
served following the service.
THANKSGIVING DAY MASS
Begin your Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 28th, by giving
thanks to God for all your many blessings by coming
to the 9:00 a.m. Mass. Please bring a nonperishable food item for those in need. Our St. Vincent de Paul Society will distribute these items to
the needy just in time for Christmas.
ST. VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY
FISCAL YEAR ENDED SEPTEMBER 30, 2013
Total receipts
$15,626.58
Total disbursements
$15,838.46
Net deficit for the year
($211.88)
Our parish’s St. Vincent de Paul Society provided aid
totaling almost $16,000 to 126 people in our local
area over the past fiscal year. The aid consisted of
food, clothing, furniture, rent, mortgage, and utility
payments, and other direct assistance. They also
provided post-secondary tuition assistance to qualified students. All of this was made possible by your
generous contributions to the Poor Boxes in the
church, by your St. Vincent de Paul envelopes, by
the Thanksgiving Day Mass collection, by St. Malachy PTG Scrip program, and by many other very
thoughtful donations. Without your vital help, many
needy people of our area would not be served.
Thank you so much for your caring support.

SCHOOL NEWS
The Eighth Grade News
Mr. Walker’s 8th graders are a busy crew. In
religion class, they are preparing for their
upcoming Confirmation, have been learning about Church
history, and are working on an anti-bullying program.
American History is the topic in Social Studies class as the
students learn about the Reconstruction Period all the way
up to present day. Once a week, Mr. Lang volunteers at St.
Malachy School through the Junior Achievement program to
teach 8th grade all about personal finance. In Algebra, 8th
grade is hard at work on the ever popular word problems
and are using various strategies and operations to solve
them. The students just finished reading The Drummer Boy
of Shiloh in literature class. This short story by Ray Bradbury
is about a young drummer boy who learns about his
importance on the battlefield during the Civil War. In
Spanish, they are learning how to conjugate verbs that end
in “ar”. They have also been sharpening up their typing skills
in computer lab, making colorful “scratch art” turkeys in art,
and science class is covering all manner of chemical bonds
and the resulting reactions that occur. So, as you can see,
8th grade has had a lot on their plates so far this year!
Computer Lab
It has been a busy year in computer class so far for the
lower grade students! Kindergarten is practicing their mouse
and keyboarding skills by playing games and typing the ABCs
and words in Microsoft Word. First grade has mastered how
to add Clip-Art into Word documents. They recently
completed an ABC picture book and are continuing to work
on their typing skills. In second grade, students created fallthemed pictures in Microsoft Publisher using Auto-Shapes,
Clip-Art, and Word-Art. The students in 3rd grade are using
Publisher’s templates to make projects like birthday
invitations and mini-books. And, the 4th graders are working
on their internet research and PowerPoint skills by looking
up facts about an animal and then creating a presentation.
How wonderful that the students have access to such
exciting technology.
ANOINTING OF THE SICK & RECONCILIATION
