THEME: Eco warriors
Outline
This programme introduces Beaver Scouts to the importance of caring for the environment and the Colony
could become involved in a recycling project thus meeting some of the requirements of the GLOBAL
CHALLENGE.

Register, Opening Ceremony, Introduction

GAME: Recycling Relay
o Space the labelled boxes across one end of the hall – bottle bank,
paper bank, Oxfam, plastic bank, compost bin.
o Divide the Colony into teams at the other end of hall and number
each team, 1,2,3,4,…..
o Dump all the items in a pile in the middle of the hall.
o The Leader calls out a number and a material – Beavers with that
number run up, find appropriate object and ‘recycle’ it in a box!

ACTIVITY: ‘That’s rubbish!’ quiz
o Place true/false cards on opposite walls of hall.
o Place bin in centre of hall, this is the starting point for each question.
o Leader asks questions and Beavers run to either true or false.
o Discuss answers.

GAME: Litterbug
o Divide the Colony into Lodges and give each a box.
o Scatter the rubbish around the room.
o Each Lodge has to run around together and choose items to put in
their box.

ACTIVITY: Scrapheap Challenge

o The Challenge is that each Lodge must make a spaceship or a robot
glue
using only the junk items they collected in the last game!!

o Display the final results and award certificates & prizes if appropriate.

ACTIVITY: Bin Bingo
o Divide the Colony into pairs or small groups and give each a bingo
card and squares of coloured paper.
o Explain that in some areas there are different coloured bins – blue for
papers, brown for garden waste, green for fruit & veg. peelings and
black for everything else.
o The Leader picks out a card and if the Beavers have the picture they
cover it with the appropriate ‘recycling’ bin colour! Items of clothing
can be covered with red squares.

then be made into jackets, blankets or used in anoraks or sleeping bags.

Recycled glass is used in the manufacture of concrete and is used in road beds, pavements and
car parks. Recycled glass can also be melted into rounded pellets and used in reflective paint on
road markings.

If 1 tonne of paper - that’s the same weight as 1,000 bags of sugar! - was recycled, then
seventeen average sized trees could be saved. Imagine what a difference that would make to
our world. Trees are the lungs of the Earth, absorbing carbon dioxide and giving us vital
oxygen!
