August –October 2016
Letter from our Pastor:
Dear Parishioners,
Our community has endured a lot this last year, especially in regards to the shooting that
took place at Umpqua Community College. This shooting has had a tremendous impact on
not only our Catholic community, but the larger community in which we reside. There are
some who internalize this tragedy with despair and desolation. With what is unfolding in
our country of racial tension has only continued to fuel that unsettling angst of despair.
This is why it is so imperative that we listen to God. God calls all of us with faith to reach
out our hand to all those whom are hurting in our community, and reach across the barriers
to embrace the hand of our brothers and sisters regardless of an individual’s ethnic
background. We are called to stand up for the oppressed, and seek social justice for all.
With the encouragement of the parish staff, pastoral council and administrative council
members on September 30th we will be having an event that will help us all to move forward
as Disciples of Christ. Please plan to join us as not only as a Catholic parishioner, but as a
community to begin the healing that Christ had spoken of many times.
On Friday, September 30th, our Catholic community will be hosting a U.C.C. Memorial Event
that will include Spiritual support/confessions, a dedication of the Our Lady of Grace Statue,
Mass, dinner and end with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. For those who are
scheduled to work that day I ask that you ask your employer to allow you to have this day
off. Join me in being a beacon for our community to see the light of Christ!
Grandfather,
Look at our brokenness. We know that in all creation only the
Human family has strayed from the Sacred Way.
We know that we are the ones who must come back together.
To walk in the Sacred Way. Grandfather, Sacred One, Teach us love, compassion, and honor.
That we may heal the earth and heal each other.
(David Schiller, editor, The Little Book of Prayers, pp. 328-329).
Sincerely Yours in Christ,
Fr. José Manuel Campos García, Pastor
In an attempt to update our parish records we will be conducting a membership
registration the weekend of August 13th & 14th. We have also included the Membership
Registration Form in this quarterly newsletter. Please take the time to fill this out
completely and return it the weekend of August 13th & 14th at the designated time. We
as a parish community want to make sure that we are meeting your spiritual needs.
Stewardship means respecting and sharing our resources as an expression of gratitude to God. It
reminds us that we are the administrators, not the owners, of our assets. Christian stewardship can
be identified by several meaningful characteristics; the most important is that it strengthens our
relationship with God. It is a way of life, not a program that has a beginning and an
end. Stewardship calls us to share a portion of our time, talent, and treasure so that the Good News
of Jesus Christ may be shared with those who do not know Him.
Stewards of Vocation Jesus calls us, as his disciples, to a new way of life—the Christian way of
life—of which stewardship is part. But Jesus does not call us as nameless people in a faceless crowd. He
calls us individually, by name. Each one of us—clergy, religious, lay person; married, single; adult,
child—has a personal vocation. God intends each one of us to play a unique role in carrying out the
divine plan. The challenge, then, is to understand our role—our vocation—and to respond generously to
this call from God. Christian vocation entails the practice of stewardship. In addition, Christ calls each of
us to be stewards of our personal vocations, which we receive from God.
We have included a form where you will have an opportunity to volunteer or join any of
the activities that are taking place at St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Francis Xavier
Catholic Church. Please return these forms in the Sunday Offertory or bring it to the
ministry fair & registration for Religious Ed., Youth Ministry, Confirmation, and RCIA will
be taking place at St. Joseph Catholic Church the weekend of August 20th & 21st.

How does our parish attract inquirers each year who consider becoming Catholic?
The short answer is you! When any parish has many inquirers year after year, it is the fruit of the
Holy Spirit as parish members open their hearts to welcome others. Members of a welcoming and
evangelizing community take seriously their call to share the Divine message of salvation. It happens in parish families, in the workplace, in gatherings with friends and neighbors, and in daily contacts. Give thanks to God as he continuously strengthens each of us who seek to do his will in offering a gentle, humble, and clear welcome to the Catholic faith. “Go out into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15)
What is RCIA?
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process established for the universal Church
for individuals to become Catholic and receive the sacraments of initiation — Baptism, Confirmation,
and the Eucharist. This initiation process also involves a parish community experiencing a renewal
in faith as it prepares and welcomes new members into the Church. The Rite speaks of conversion
as a “spiritual journey.” Centered on fostering a deep relationship with Jesus and the Church he
founded, this journey takes place through distinct stages over a period of time suitable to bring
about a thorough catechesis, significant experience of the parish community, and commitment to
the liturgical and moral life of the Catholic faithful. The Second Vatican Council called for the restoration and use of this venerable and powerful method of initiation for the worldwide Church.
Who is RCIA for?
1. Persons in need of Baptism.
2. Persons baptized in another Christian tradition who desire to become Catholic.
3. Persons baptized Catholic in need of First Communion and/or Confirmation.
In celebrating this month of Our Lady’s final journey to God in her glorious Assumption, let us ask
her motherly intercession to draw souls to the Sacred Heart of her Son. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a journey too — of conversion to God and what he intends for us. RCIA is
the process by which persons who were never baptized, or were baptized in another Christian tradition, become members of the Church, a people on pilgrimage to our Heavenly Father.
Inquiry will begin in August for adults, September for teens and
children. Please contact Chris Hart at the Parish Office
