Hear my prayer and be merciful to me, a sinner. t shouldn’t be that difficult to be humble when standing before God in prayer. However, in addition to telling God what “I” want/need, we must remember the needs of the world around us. With whose prayer do you identify more, the tax collector or the Pharisee? Why? When has an awareness of your lowliness helped you pray in ways that pierced the clouds to reach God’s ears? NO COMPARISONS How many times have we read or heard about someone who’s gotten into trouble—maybe even fired from a job—because of a brush with the law? While our “Christian” minds tell us to be sorry and even pray for the person, a little voice inside our heads may also be saying, “I’m glad I would never do anything like that.” And perhaps we wouldn’t. But are there some things we do that are still not pleasing in God’s eyes? Today’s readings caution us not to look so intently at someone else’s wrongdoing that we overlook our own weaknesses and shortcomings. When we measure ourselves against the worst people we can think of, we come out looking pretty good. There is a danger, however, in using someone else’s behavior as a way of reflecting our own goodness. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Silver Ring Thing—Catholic Edition Young people today are faced with more pressures and conflicting messages about sexuality than ever before. How are we seeking to form the hearts and minds of young people in the truth and meaning of human sexuality? The Silver Ring Thing‐CATHOLIC EDITION is a high‐ tech, high‐energy performance that educates teens about the benefits of remaining abstinent until marriage and the dangers of promiscuous behavior. On November 19th the Silver Ring Thing‐ CATHOLIC EDITION will be held at St. Vincent College Fred Rogers Center from 6:30‐ 9:00p.m., and all teenagers, parents, and youth workers are invited to attend. With dramas, videos, special effects, and speakers, teenagers will be motivated in a unique and personal way to choose to commit to both God and their future spouse to remain chaste until marriage.
