Illustrators Program On Sat., June 3, 2017, Patrick McGuire of the Elkhart County Historical Museum and Martha Owen of the Nappanee Museum and Library, told of Illustrators of Elkhart County. Patrick told of T.Dart Walker of Middlebury; J. “Ding” Darling, born in Michigan who moved to Elkhart where his father was a pastor. He won two Pulitzer Prizes for his political cartoons; and Ted Drake, Elkhart, iconic sports artist of the Notre Dame Leprechaun and Chicago Bulls, who was the artist for Kulka, Fran, and Ollie. Marsha Owen of Nappanee then told of the Nappanee Six, 5 of whom were inspired by Nappanee art teacher Bessie Brown. They all knew each other, and were as follows: Max Gwin, cartoonist; Henry Maust, who did ad illustrations and cartoons; Bill Holman, inventor of the word “Foo” and character Smokey Stover, which was very popular during WW2. There were many Foo expressions, and even a Foo Car was developed. The Nappanee Museum has an actual Foo Car. Visit the Museum Website and Friends cartoons. Frances “Mike” Parks, drew political cartoons. There was also a 7th illustrator as well, J. Harrison Hossler, who designed a local church and did portraits.
