St Joseph’s Newsletter Friday 3rd March 2017 The Gift of Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving The season of Lent reminds us of Jesus’ forty days and forty nights of fasting and prayer in the wilderness prior to beginning his ministry. During this time he grew stronger through resisting various temptations. In the Gospel reading we hear how the tempter aims to divert Jesus from his true mission, however, he rejects each temptation with a word from Scripture, which is the Word of God. As part of our human condition we face temptations but through the knowledge and understanding of the Word of God we can be guided and strengthened to resist these temptations. During Lent we are called to follow the three disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. They prepare our hearts for repentance and conversion. The Holy Spirit gives us the grace to be creative and imaginative but also obedient and disciplined. What are you giving up for Lent? What are you going to do more of to help others in need? Fr. Des reminded the children at our Ash Wednesday Mass to pray more by reciting the Lord’s Prayer at 6pm each day with family members. The children have also been encouraged to show almsgiving by giving something up and then placing the pocket money they would have spent into their Good Shepherd Appeal Box. Please also bring into school any unwanted rucksacks so that these can be distributed to those in need at future soup kitchens in Birmingham. Make time to pray. Fast on Friday. Visit the sick. Give generously. Read the Passion. Study the Word of God. Go to Confession. World Book Day Before half term we informed you the school would celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 9th March. The children are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character and will take part in a number of planned activities throughout the day. .
