EXPERIENCE NEW ZEALAND’S BEST
Welcome to the University of Waikato. I applaud your decision to investigate the outstanding
education facilities and lifestyle choices offered by our institution and look forward to sharing
the advantages with you.
We offer our international students an outstanding, quality
education. But we also provide an introduction to our unique
New Zealand culture and the opportunity to make
New Zealand friends and connections. We hope that their
connections with New Zealand will become strong, and that
even when they return home their connections will remain
active throughout their careers and their lives.
Our Vision for the future embraces our three key strength;
Excellence, Distinctiveness and International Connectedness.
We commit to the delivery of a world-class education and
research portfolio, providing a full and dynamic university
experience which is distinctive in character and pursuing
strong international linkages to advance knowledge.
Firmly positioned as one of New Zealand’s leading and
most innovative universities, the University of Waikato
offers all of our students outstanding teaching and research
opportunities. What’s more, situated in the heart of the
Waikato, with easy access to some of this country’s most
beautiful beaches, rivers, lakes and mountains, we offer you
the complete package – a university experience to remember
and benefit from the rest of your life.
Nationally and internationally, qualifications awarded by
the University of Waikato are recognised and respected,
while our graduates are sought after for a range of academic
and commercial roles. We pride ourselves on our strong
and diverse global connections, and acknowledge too that
the social and culturally inclusive make-up of our student
population contributes to this.
The very special character of the University of Waikato
does not just rest on our academic laurels. Our close links
with our region – characterized by its farming, successful
entrepreneurs and businesses people, innovative scientists
and researchers, sportspeople and adventurers, cosmopolitan
cities and small towns, and the strong influence of the original
Māori tribe of the region, Tainui, are reflected in the Waikato
University experience.
Our excellence is self evident in the individual experiences
of students – undergraduate and postgraduate – and our
successes reflected in the national monitoring of research
achievements – we were rated first in 10 subjects in the last
review round. Moreover our clear leadership in some areas,
including Computer Science, Management, Education and the
Sciences is clear.
We value our distinctiveness in our commitment to
sustainability – environmentally, socially and economically,
our close connection with Māori, particularly Tainui, and
our support of educational achievement for our indigenous
population, and our leadership role enabling and inspiring
people (especially students) towards their full potential and
in the enhancement of shared social, economic cultural and
environmental outcomes.
At the University of Waikato we pursue strong international
linkages to advance knowledge. We foster elite international
alliances to enhance our international reputation and profile,
build staff capability through academic collaboration, enhance
student learning through shared curriculum development and
student exchanges, and collaborate in quality assurance, best
practice and benchmarking.
The Waikato University experience is unique, stimulating,
challenging and rewarding – we look forward to sharing it.

Distinction
Waikato Management School has a strong track record
of generating world leading research. The most recent
(2007) national tertiary research evaluations confirmed
Waikato Management School as the leading researchbased management school in Accounting and Finance,
and Management, Human Resources, Industrial Relations,
International Business and Other Business. These subjects

education. We’re accredited to AACSB (The United Statesbased Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business)
– the world’s longest-established assessor of business
education, EQUIS (The European Quality Improvement
System) and AMBA (The Association of MBAs). Only one
percent of the world’s business schools have met the strict
standards of all three accreditation bodies.
Practice Relevance
Waikato Management School is committed to ensuring all
students receive a research-led, practice relevant education.
The skills and curiosity of our students are developed through
an education philosophy that promotes independent thinking
and collaborative work. Because our faculty are active
researchers, students are exposed to fresh ideas, emerging
theory and real-world, real-time business cases.
International Connectivity
We have alliances with a number of international
universities and our faculty are drawn from the best
universities around the world. As a global business school
competing in a global market for education and research,
our focus is both international and national. We play a
significant role on the international scene through world
leading research, strong links to multinational companies
and major universities, and by providing education that
equips students for the global business environment.
Our faculty bring the rich experience gained through
international research and consulting connections to

international students come from more than 40 countries to
study with us and make up a quarter of our student body.

Waikato Management School strives to offer an outstanding
experience to all stakeholders. Students are supported by an

WHY NEW ZEALAND?
Why go to the end of the earth for your education? Because it’s there you’ll find a
culture of innovation, adaptability and risk-taking that is taking New Zealand forward
in today’s global knowledge economy.

Located in the South Pacific Ocean, New Zealand is around
the same size as Japan or Britain, with a population of just
over four million.
8
With typical ingenuity, Kiwis – as New Zealanders call
themselves - have turned their distance from the major
world markets and low population density into a competitive
advantage: it's made them into a nation of resourceful
all-rounders.
Around the world, Kiwis are known for their can-do attitude
and ability to find creative solutions to a range of problems.
A tiny nation by global standards, New Zealand has shown its
businesses can stand proud among the best in the world.
Peter Jackson's Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings trilogy
put New Zealand's creative technologies on the map –
and proved that blockbuster movies do not have to come out
of Hollywood.
Merino wool clothing manufacturer Icebreaker has given
the traditional Kiwi woollen singlet a new twist, marrying
sustainability with luxury, and transforming it into a
high-performance brand with global reach.
And New Zealand's dairy cooperative Fonterra is the
world's No. 2 exporter of traded milk products, second
only to Nestle.
New Zealand's reputation for innovation and adaptability is
matched by an exceptional quality of life. Lack of pollution
and the stunning diversity of scenery provide the perfect
setting for work and play, and New Zealanders are known for
their honesty, friendliness and openness. You can be sure of
a warm welcome from New Zealand's unique mix of Māori,
Pacific, Asian and European peoples.

“A trip into the country taught me there’s so much more value in
the environment than in money or material things. Back home in the
Philippines I visited an upland farming family who lived in a shackhouse that was almost falling over. I asked them how they were
doing. ‘Good,’ they said. ‘No problems.’ I thought, ‘What?’ Then it hit
me, the family had enough food to get by, and wonderful mountains
and forests to enjoy every day. That single visit provided the catalyst
for my PhD; I’m examining the value of biodiversity on private and
government owned land in New Zealand.
“I chose New Zealand to study because New Zealanders have
a passion for their environment that’s driving protection and
enhancement initiatives. I’m thrilled to contribute, and hope
New Zealand’s local ideas grow to have global impact.”
WHY WAIKATO?
New Zealand has proved it can take on the world with its agile and innovative businesses.
Dairy cooperative Fonterra is expanding into nutraceuticals such as chocolate cheese;
Comvita has cornered the global market with its innovative manuka honey based health
products, while Endace is a world leader in internet traffic monitoring equipment.
All these companies crucially combine knowledge and
innovation, and all are based alongside the University of
Waikato in New Zealand's innovation heartland, the centre of
the nation's agricultural manufacturing economy.
Just an hour-and-a-half's drive south from the main city of
Auckland, the Waikato region is home to three-quarters of
New Zealand's scientists, and contains the world's largest
dairy and cheese plants.
The University itself is a major contributor to innovation,
and punches well above its weight in global terms.
The University of Waikato outperforms its American
counterparts in research commercialisation, achieving the
highest return on investment compared to all US universities
according to 2005 data.
Innovative business needs innovative people, and Waikato
Management School is dedicated to turning out top-quality
graduates committed to sustainable business success. The
School's ‘triple crown’ accreditation by the worlds' three
leading assessors of business education means a Waikato
degree is recognised and valued anywhere in the world.
Typically, many young Kiwis choose to live and work
overseas for a few years after finishing their studies in what's
known as the Big OE (overseas experience). Sought-after
as employees around the world, they have a reputation for
bringing with them an inquiring mind, a can-do attitude and
a positive outlook.
Studying alongside Kiwi students at Waikato will give you
the opportunity to share their optimism for the future,
develop new ways of thinking and hone your innovative
problem-solving skills. Then you too will be ready to take on
the world.

Foreign exchange dealer and first-class honours graduate Xiaoman
(Charmaine) Cui beat out 6000 applicants for one of only 297
Australasian jobs with ANZ. Peter Green heads up ANZ Bank’s Franchise
Services and thinks Cui has what it takes. “Xiaoman has coped
admirably with the rigours of the dealing room environment and has
shown great ability to learn the ways of the financial markets.”
Cui’s education went beyond economics, finance and the mechanics
of foreign exchange. The young woman from Ningxia, China worked
hard to understand English and Kiwi culture. “I’m always looking to
get involved and find opportunities to stand out from the crowd. And
coming to Waikato University has given me the chance to do that.”

Waikato Management School offers five bachelor degrees. Each of these degrees provides
the opportunity to study a ‘major’ or specialisation within the area of the degree. It is also
possible to take a ‘second major’ from any other subject offered by the School or from

QUALIFICATIONS OVERVIEW
10
An area of study in which students can ‘major’. A major,
such as finance or tourism, forms a significant part of the
points required to obtain a qualification.
Bachelor Degrees
A structured course in an area of study such as management
or communication. Each degree has a different 'make-up' with
a set number of papers at different levels.
Certificates
One semester, or one year, qualifications typically used for
short specialised programmes or as bridging programmes.
Provides a programme similar to the first year of a
bachelor degree.
Diplomas
Awarded at a higher level than a certificate. Diplomas
cover a range of subjects and represent the second stage of
undergraduate study; corresponding to the second year of a
degree programme.
Bachelor Honours Degree
Either one-year full-time postgraduate programmes which
are a qualification in their own right, or part of a larger
programme that includes the bachelor degree.
Graduate Certificates
Require the equivalent of one semester of full time study at
graduate level. These can provide a bridge for students who
wish to seek admission into a postgraduate diploma.
Graduate Diplomas
Generally a one year full-time programme. These provide the
equivalent of a major in a subject other than that in which the
student has majored for their first degree.
Postgraduate Certificates
Available for graduates who wish to build on an earlier degree.
These programmes can broaden existing knowledge, provide
industry experience or retrain in areas of demand.
Postgraduate Diplomas
Generally comprise a one year full-time programme of
graduate papers. They build on attainment in a prior
degree and demonstrated practical, professional or
scholarly experience.
Masters Degrees
Advanced qualification involving intensive study and
supervised research. Specialist degrees such as the Master of
Management Studies (MMS) and generalist degrees such as
the Master of Business Administration (MBA) are offered.
Doctoral Degree
Gives the student extensive knowledge in their chosen
field, trains them to do original and meaningful research
and prepares them to function as a member of a
teaching faculty.
Undergraduate Study
Graduate Study
Undergraduate study provides the fundamental building
blocks of a university education – the foundation for your
career. At Waikato Management School you can take the
Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS). It provides an
integrated programme across all the essential areas needed to
be an effective manager and future business leader. Specialised
degrees are also available in communication studies (BCS),
electronic commerce (BECom), financial analysis (BBA(Fin))
and tourism (BTour). Certificates and diplomas provide short
programmes in management generally, or in a specialised
area associated with one of the degree programmes offered.
As well as providing valuable programmes in their own
right, certificates and diplomas are transferrable to degree
programmes for those who want to continue their studies.
Our graduate programmes are designed to practically assist
people already in business or commerce, as well as students
continuing with higher education. We work with companies to
provide tailored corporate and executive education for staff.
Our research degree students are encouraged to work
with and be informed by business and research. We would
welcome an opportunity to design, with you, a programme
or research investigation that meets your needs.

Why do a BMS?
It’s the focus on management that makes our Bachelor of
Management Studies (BMS) stand out. You’ll receive a solid
grounding in your specialty subject, as well as learn what
makes a business tick and what makes a manager great.
Waikato’s BMS has long been recognised by employers as
New Zealand’s premier management degree. The extra year
of the BMS compared to other commerce degrees means
that as well as covering all the core subjects that are central
to management, you can specialise in up to two different
areas, achieve a good grounding in both and expand your
career options.
Throughout your degree you’ll get practical experience.
You’ll develop a new product and marketing plan in your first
year, take part in a case competition in your third year, and in
your fourth year you’ll investigate an issue within a company
and produce a research report.

As well as being a great way to gain confidence and
experience, the winning team shares $1500 donated by Lion

to solve real problems in an actual management situation.
With the freedom to choose your own project, you can focus

Your second major can also be chosen from any

BMS Honours
In the third year of the BMS, top students may qualify for
entry to the highly regarded BMS Honours degree. The BMS
Honours programme provides an opportunity to further
explore and develop areas of interest in your chosen field as
well as demonstrate excellence to employers, and enables
you to include a first year of graduate study as part of your

you are able to synthesise ideas, develop skills and prepare

Why do a BBA?
This uniquely focused programme offers you an alternative
business degree to management studies if numbers and their
meaning are your game.
The BBA(Fin) is a three-year degree with a particular emphasis
on financial management, so you can get your qualification
and get on with investment banking or stock broking or other
financial sector careers. Rather than covering the broader
aspects of business management, you’ll look in depth at the
quantitative (math based) disciplines.
Your first major will be in accounting, or economics or
finance and it’s strongly recommended that you also choose
a second major. While this can be in any subject, you’ll
really focus your qualification if you take a second major
in another BBA subject; you can study any combination of
two of the three subjects, such as accounting and finance,
or economics and accounting. Other good second major
subjects include statistics, mathematics or computing.
If you choose to major in accounting, you can use this degree

route to meet the academic requirements for membership of
the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants.

industry that’s bursting with opportunity.
Our lecturers are both researchers and business advisors so
they’re hooked into emerging trends and industry needs. Your
classes will also cover broad management areas, so you’ll
study e-commerce from a range of perspectives including
communications, finance and business strategy as well as
hone your technical skills by studying programming and
through industry placements.
You’ll work on a real business challenge, which could be
anything from building a website to helping a company assess
its e-commerce strategy. This practical experience will give
you credibility and confidence when you are face to face with

BECom Honours
The BECom Honours degree provides a bridge into further
academic study in the electronic commerce area at masters
or PhD level. Because of the focus on further academic
study, the degree includes a research methods paper to
introduce you to the processes and techniques of conducting
and publishing academic research. The methods paper is
normally completed before undertaking the other required
paper – a one paper dissertation (591) – in which you, under
the guidance of an academic supervisor, will devise and
design a research project in the electronic commerce area.
The dissertation work will usually involve the development
of a literature review, selection of appropriate research
methodology and the design and execution of field data
collection. This work is then followed by analysis of the data
collected and the write-up of the dissertation.
Students who have been awarded the BECom degree at the
University of Waikato, or a qualification considered equivalent
by the Academic Board, with an academic average of B+ or
better may apply for entry in to the BECom(Hons) degree.
Students will normally complete Honours within one year of
full-time study, or the equivalent in part-time study.

CERTIFICATES AND DIPLOMAS
CERTIFICATES AND DIPLOMAS
The certificate and diploma provide university qualifications that require a relatively short
period of study and are targeted to meet particular educational needs. They can also provide
a pathway to future study.
The certificate represents the first stage of undergraduate
study. The diploma represents the second stage of
undergraduate study, corresponding to the second year of a
degree programme.
Who are they suited to?
These qualifications are suitable for the following types
of students:
> Those who want an introductory programme in
management, financial analysis, communication studies,
electronic commerce or tourism.
> Those with no background in the chosen area would
take a certificate. For those with some experience or
tertiary background in the area the diploma may be the
better programme.
> Those who want to work towards a degree part-time or
who would like to work through a degree programme in
stages, taking time away from university. A certificate or
diploma can provide you with recognition of what you
have achieved so far, but the credit is also transferable to
your degree programme when you want to go further.
In broad terms, a certificate is similar to a first year of
university study, a diploma a second year. In the Waikato
Management School we associate these programmes with
our degrees.

These undergraduate certificates and diplomas require
one year of normal full-time study, or the equivalent in
part-time study.

are specialist qualifications. The Postgraduate Diploma in
Management Studies is an exception. It provides a programme
in general management for those with business experience.
> Those with a bachelor degree who want to work toward a
masters qualification. For these students, the postgraduate
diploma represents the first stage or first year of a
masters programme. For example, for a student with an
undergraduate degree with a major in accounting, the
Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting could be followed by
a one-year Master of Management Studies in Accounting.
For a student with significant management experience,
the Postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies
represents the first stage of the Waikato MBA.

in a subject within the postgraduate diploma, it is necessary
to have significant background in the discipline from which
the subject is drawn. Normally, a grade average of at least 'B'
in the related undergraduate papers is required. Approval to
take graduate papers is given by the graduate convenor of the
relevant department. A one paper dissertation (591) may be
taken as part of a postgraduate diploma programme.
Distinction
Only postgraduate diplomas may be awarded with distinction.
There is no time limit involved for completion of the papers that
contribute towards distinction, therefore students who study
part-time may also qualify for distinction. Distinction is based
on gaining an A- grade point average over the papers studied.

MASTER OF
ELECTRONIC COMMERCE
The Master of Management Studies (MMS)
degree provides specialised postgraduate
level study in management disciplines.
The Master of Electronic Commerce (MECom) is
intended to provide an advanced, research-based
qualification in the field of electronic commerce.
The MMS is designed for graduate management students
looking to specialise in a management discipline and
undertake research in a particular area of interest. The MMS
degree is taken as a second year of graduate study after
completing an honours degree or a postgraduate diploma.
The MECom aims to develop in participants an
understanding of the leading-edge literature and research
in the electronic commerce environment, and from this
knowledge an understanding of how electronic commerce
affects different areas of management practice.
The MMS degree may be taken as a research-only degree, or
as a degree combining taught papers and research.
The MECom is taken as a second year of study after an
honours degree or postgraduate diploma.
Requirements for the MMS
Requirements for a MECom
The MMS requires one year of normal full-time study, or the
equivalent part-time. All papers are taken at the graduate
level, and must include a dissertation or thesis. A research
methodology paper must also be included unless it has been

An Accelerated Postgraduate Diploma and
MMS Programme
Students with the equivalent of a three-year bachelor degree
without honours would normally need to study for two
academic years to complete a programme leading to a masters
degree. The programme would involve a postgraduate diploma
followed by the MMS degree. For students who performed to
a high academic standard in their undergraduate degree it is
possible to enrol in an accelerated programme leading to a
postgraduate diploma and MMS in as little as 14 months. The
normal programme is accelerated by combining research with
a normal load of taught graduate papers. 500 level papers.
This programme places higher demands on students, and thus
has more stringent admission requirements.
ROSIE BENTLEY
MMS (First Class Honours), Post Grad Dip MNFPO.
“They say study broadens the mind,” says Rosie Bentley.
“It’s transformed mine. I’ve been guided, encouraged and
challenged to critique my world view rigorously.
“The Postgraduate Diploma in Management of Not for Profit
Organisations [now named Social Enterprise] helped me
understand the wider social context of issues that had occurred
in my workplace. After completing this qualification I wanted to
learn still more.”
A pivotal experience was finding herself in the middle of a G8
summit forum at St Paul’s Cathedral in London. Kofi Annan, who
was secretary general of the UN at the time, and other high
powered international representatives were speaking. “I was
inspired to deepen my responsibility for people’s wellbeing.”
This led Rosie to a Masters Dissertation exploring influences on
workplace well-being. Using action research, Rosie and the staff
of an organisation experimented with and implemented some
changes that are still valued today. “Research processes can deepen
understanding of practical issues facing managers,” says Rosie.
Waikato Management School has an active and successful research programme. The University

“I’ve researched iconic kiwi companies such as Heinz Watties and

that with increasingly competitive markets and finite resources,
adopting good supply chain management will create advantages.
Just look at any job website; there’s already huge demand for supply

seek the expertise to apply good supply chain principles.”
LIVING AND LEARNING IN NEW ZEALAND
Spectacular landscapes, healthy environment, pleasant climate and sophisticated cities
make New Zealand a great place to live and learn. The society is diverse and multicultural,
and New Zealanders are known for their honesty, friendliness, and openness. The country’s
compact size means that all of its attractions are close to each other.

LIVING IN HAMILTON CITY
Hamilton is a rapidly growing, vibrant and progressive city, with a population of approximately
130,000. It has an active music, arts and café culture, with a distinctively New Zealand flavour.
The Waikato River, New Zealand’s largest, provides a focus for many sporting and recreational
activities. Waikato, in the native Māori language, means ‘flowing water’.
Hamilton is a centre for education, research and innovation,
with a university, a polytechnic, and a number of research
organisations. The city is also home to the country's only
innovation park, Innovation Waikato, located right next to the
University of Waikato.
Hamilton is also a student city with more than 25,000 people
involved in tertiary study. The city caters for every student
need and has a large range of activities for students. The city
is clean and green with very little pollution, traffic congestion
or other urban problems.
There are a number of community events that the
University and its students feature in. They include
The Great Race – rowing against international universities,
the Balloons Over Waikato festival, “O” week – a week-long
celebration to welcome students, and a day dedicated to
celebrating University international students, generally held
in September.
Hamilton hosts the New Zealand rounds of the international
V8 Supercars motorsport street race (March/April) and the
WRC World Rally Championship (August), while the RipCurl
Pro Surf Classic is held at nearby Raglan (March). The city is
also home to Parachute, one of the world’s largest Christian
rock music festivals (February), and Fieldays, the third largest
agricultural exhibition in the world (June).
Students love the fact that Hamilton is so centrally
located in the upper North Island; only 90 minutes from
Auckland, yet offering one of the lowest urban living costs
in New Zealand. Student accommodation is inexpensive and
plentiful, with most students able to live within a 15-minute
walk of the campus.
The average temperature range is 15-30º Celsius during the

needs for all international management students.
The University Library – and its related facilities – includes
over 611,000 books and 201,000 serial titles. The University

students who have concerns or queries of any kind, both
inside and outside university life. Mentors are senior students
from a range of management school qualifications.
Waikato International

international students. The centre assists students in
both their pre-departure and subsequent arrival in
New Zealand, including advice on visa requirements,

and properly cared for. Waikato Management School and the
