Palma de Mallorca
Palma de Mallorca is the capital of the
autonomous community of Balearic Islands of
Spain, and is located in the south coast of
Mallorca. Mallorca is the largest of all of the
Balearic Islands (Minorca, Ibiza, and
Formentera) and considered a major tourist
destination in Europe. The island is surrounded
by turquoise warm waters, which attract
millions of tourists every year.
The city is a popular destination due to its
warm weather, history and art. The Palma de
Mallorca airport is the third largest airport in
Spain and 15 minutes away from the City
Center. Palma also prides itself from being
one of the most multilingual and diverse
cities in Spain. Both Spanish and Catalan are
official languages and many people are fluent
in German and English.
Academic Program
Eligibility and Cost
Classes will take place at the University of Balearic
Islands (UIB), a public research university 20 mts from
the city center. The university and the Center of the Study
of Spanish language have a well-known international
reputation in the teaching Spanish as second language.
Students will stay with Spanish families and will be
exposed to Spanish 24 hours a day.
Applicants will be a Purdue University student with
an overall minimum of 2.5/4.0 GPA. They will have
completed 4 semesters of college Spanish or
equivalent, will have the maturity to travel

Baleares for a total of six credit hours of direct Purdue
credit with letter grades. All courses are taught in Spanish
by faculty from Purdue and the UIB. In addition to the
faculty member and an assistant in residence from
Purdue, students will have access to UIB staff members
who will be available to provide counsel, supervision,
and any other assistance that the students need.
Classes are divided into two different segments:
traditional classroom instruction and weekly excursions.
Attendance at both segments is mandatory. Traditional
classes meet Monday - Thursday in the classroom, and
Friday classes will include field trips around the city
and to the Island. Excursions are largely cultural
activities that include visits to the world-renowned sites.
Students will have access to Internet connection in the
university and in their families’ homes, if available.
