Nursery & Pre-Prep News Reception Nursery No doubt you have gathered that the highlight of the week was our trip to Bocketts Farm! Pippins have been painting on the tables, posting marbles down tubes and transferring sand from bucket to bucket ... what fun! Acorns class have enjoyed reading Whatever Next, made their own space rockets and have blasted off to the moon! After a snack on arrival, we went off on a tour of the farm on the back of the tractor. We saw a new born calf being cleaned up by its Mummy and then went off to watch Betty the goat being milked; we were very impressed with how much milk she gave and how good she was, and we all had a turn to stroke her afterwards. We have been enjoying the lovely weather, spending time in the sandpit, riding on the bikes and scooters and creating lovely chalk pictures on the floor. Oaks class have also been enjoying the sunshine, playing with jelly snow in the tough spot and have been playing lots of football. Swimming is really coming on now, everyone has increased in confidence and are eager to learn and work on their skills. We also saw nine adorable curly haired pigs sleeping under a warm light and looked round the Kitchen gardens. After lunch was the pig racing with Will-I-am, Peppa Pig and Boris Johnson all racing around the track as we cheered and waved our flags. We then enjoyed the bouncy pillows and the playground before heading home. We had some very sleepy little ones and big one (Miss King!) on the bus on the way home. The farmer who took us around was very impressed with our behaviour and said we were the best group she had had all year! Well done to all the lovely children! In other news we have been looking at o’clock time in maths and writing about our farm trip in Literacy. What a fun and busy week in the run up to the Easter holidays! Nursery & Pre-Prep News (Continued) Year 1 Year 2 We have been continuing our topic about growing plants and have taken the opportunity to explore our school grounds in the lovely fine weather. We have discovered stems, roots, flowers and leaves on many plants and looked carefully at the jagged and smoothness of the leaves – some even had hairs on them! Our beans are proving to be of great interest in the classrooms with a leaf slowly uncurling – apparently it ‘looks like a dinosaur!’ This week and next the children are building vehicles and attaching the chassis to the wheels using fixed and non-fixed axles. There is a real variety of designs and much discussion about the logo too! Images of power and speed are very desirable! We are busy planning lovely surprises for Mother’s Day. Lucky mummies! Division is a tricky concept to master so please use any opportunity you have at home to practise practical sharing activities such as: if you have 10 sweets and give an equal number to 5 children, how many sweets will each child have? Thank you very much indeed to Dr. Cathy Dooris who came in to tell us all about her wonderful trek up Mount Kilimanjaro. We looked at a globe to find Tanzania, we saw some of her wonderful photographs depicting the change in landscape from the bottom to the top of the mountain and were all most impressed with her determination, perseverance and energy! In ICT we used the program to draw a teddy and the clothes or items we wanted our teddy to have. Once our drawings were complete we were able to dress our teddy by dragging the items across and place them onto our main drawing. By using the arrow keys we could change the angle of an item and make it bigger or smaller. We had some very cool teddies with trendy sunglasses and umbrellas! Congratulations to the children who displayed lovely manners last week and had a special treat sitting at the Good Manners table with Mrs Jones: Rec JD Finn Rec SJ Keir 1 HL Michael 1 DB Aryan 2 CP Ann 2 DP/EPS Caelan 2 CF Taran Red Nose Day, Friday 24th March We’re looking forward to seeing the children in their own clothes (preferably red) on the last day of term, and collecting the donations to the charity. The best joke from each class will be shared with the rest of the department! Pre-Prep Courtyard If you haven’t done so already, please take at a look at our beautiful, colourful, daffodil-filled courtyard! A huge thank you to ‘Auntie’ Mel Fegan (mum of Jack in Year 2) for all her wonderful gardening; we even have crocuses under the fire escape! I have 3 sons at Copthorne, Arun in Year 3, Rohan in Year 2 and Kian in Pippins Nursery. Junior parkrun is a fully marshalled, timed 2km run open to all children aged 4-14yrs and is held in parks across the country every Sunday morning at 9am. Children can walk, run, skip or hop their way around the course with their friends and family for fun or as part of a training plan. In January, we launched our own Junior parkrun in Tilgate Park, Crawley. We had over 320 children attend the event and we regularly get over 200 children joining us every week making us one of the largest junior events in the country. To celebrate our 10th run, we are hosting a Superhero themed run this Sunday, 19th March and would love to see some more Copthorne families! The aim of Junior Park Run is to offer free outdoor activity for all children aged 4-14yrs old. It also offers an excellent opportunity for all the family to get involved and come together on a regular basis. It is a great way for children to make new friends and to get involved and introduce themselves to a sport without any of the normal outside pressures as well as improving health and confidence. This is a fun event aimed at encouraging children of all abilities, not just those that are naturally gifted at sport. I have attached our flyer promoting our Superhero themed run this weekend (on page 11 of this newsletter) ... hope to see you there! The most important statistic of the day was the fact that every available boy from year 4 was representing the school today in either the A, B or C sides. The enjoyment factor was clear to see from the boys and although most of the results were not in our favour it was great to see all the boys getting involved as, I am sure you are all aware, is not always possible. I trust that the boys have enjoyed the season win lose or draw as the most important thing is the development of their game and skill set and it clear that they are all, at whatever level they perform, better rugby players now than they were at the start of the season. The U9Bs played their game indoors today, against a very good, tall BHHS team. Victoria was our captain and got us under way by winning the toss and taking the first centre pass. We started brightly with the girls making some good passes and linking the ball down to our shooters; Victoria U8ANetball v BHHS Won 8-1 The girls had beautiful sunny weather for their game in Brighton against Brighton Preparatory. Tianna had a wonderful game moving around the court and giving great passes to both Jasmine and Rachel for some excellent shooting. In the last quarter the girls managed to score 4 goals with some excellent defence by Ruby and Priya. The girls won the game easily with the final score being 8-1. Both Bella and Jasmine worked wonderfully around the D to create some opportunities for shooting. Well done girls!!! and Gabriella. We scored off this first passage of play and I thought the game was going to be an easy one - it certainly wasn’t! The Copthorne girls saw themselves 1-3 down after the first quarter as the BHHS girls settled into their game with a feisty centre, and very tall GD and GA! Mona had a tough game against the GA but she played brilliantly, marking her well. Katie also had her work cut out playing U8B Netball v BHHS as our centre, but she used her speed and height well. Won 6-0 Gabriella played in various positions and showed how A very enjoyable day out to Brighton for the U8’s final versatile she is. This game could have gone either way netball game of the term, the sun was shining and the but we eventually won it because of our great marking in girls all in good spirits. Both teams worked exceptionally the third quarter. Well played girls, you really had to also a huge help around the circle supporting her work hard and it paid off. Congratulations to Victoria who shooters. Sophie was instrumental in moving into the was, quite rightly nominated as player of the match by right position to receive the ball and quickly releasing it to BHHS. Thank you to our supporters this game was a real Paige and Bethany who each scored 3 goals. When pleasure to umpire! Copthorne found themselves having to defend Amelia, Ivy-May and Talia were not afraid to step in front of their U10B Netball v BHHS players to grab the ball, confidently making sure the ball Won 17-1 did not enter the net. Well done girls, great effort and The girls were super excited to play on a beautiful enthusiasm shown by all!! Players of the match went to our two superb GK’s, Amelia Wednesday afternoon, the sun was shining and the girls were ready to go although a little concerned as they had and Ivy-May. been told they faced tough opposition! They needn't have Team: Amelia, Ivy-May, Jennifer, Pippa, Sophie, worried as the first quarter Copthorne dominated from the Bethany, Jemima, Paige, Samantha and Talia first whistle, superb passing from Robin, Isabella and Sophie helped Ella and Amelie score an impressive 5 goals, U9B Netball v BHHS whilst awesome defending from Kirsten and Won 6-4 Isabelle only allowed BHHS to score one goal- in fact the only goal of the whole match! Copthorne continued to dominate and finished the first half 10 -1 ahead. A quick reshuffle of positions did not phase them and they all rose to the challenge in their new positions with goals from Isabelle and Kirsten taking the score line to 15-1, final quarter 2 more goals were scored and the final score line 17- 1. Fantastic play from all girls who did not give up with their determination and focused attitude, player of the match was awarded to Robin but you were all great and i thoroughly enjoyed umpiring! well done girls. can happen in versatility! They won this match 7-6 with three goals from both Rosie and Sheen and one from Jemima! Copthorne then took on Cumnor House and again went behind early on but unfortunately they couldn’t claw this match back like in the first match and they lost this match 4-3. We had lots of missed opportunities and chances in this match, and this game should have been ours! Copthorne’s final match in their pool was against Brambletye (the overall winners of the tournament) and Brambletye proved just too strong for Copthorne and won this match. U11A Netball Tournament at Hurst On a lovely sunny afternoon 9 schools took part in U11A Copthorne then waited to hear who we would be playing next and found that it was a three way tie between Netball tournament hosted by Hurst. Matches were 6 minutes each way, with a straight turn around at half time Copthorne, Cumnor and Ardingly for second place in our group to go through to the cup play offs! In the end it and 2 minutes between rounds. We had a tough afternoon ahead as we had to play our first five matches went down to goals for and against and Ardingly went through in second place, putting us in third and into the back to back. plate play offs. Round 1 v Cumnor Won 5-2 Copthorne then played Handcross in the play offs and it Round 2 v LND Won 7-4 was nail-biting throughout the match, as the game could Round 3 v Ardingly Won 6-1 have gone either way! When the whistle blew it was a Round 4 v Hurst Won 11-3 draw at 2-2, therefore extra time had to be played to see Round 5 v Great Walstead Lost 2-6 After 60 minutes of netball the girls were exhausted and who went through to the plate final! 5 minutes of extra time were played and you could see that Copthorne were thankfully there was a 10 minute break for a breather. After a well deserved drink and a doughnut the girls were beginning to tire, whilst Handcross were still hungry for the ball. They ended up just pipping us to the post and ready to play again. went through to the plate final, although what a way to go Round 6 v Handcross Park Won 6-1 out! Well done to all of the girls as this tournament was Round 7 v Brambletye Drew 5-5 played in very high spirts throughout the afternoon and it Round 8 v Burgess Hill Won 8-6 was nice to see just how far some of the girls have The final result was extremely close as the top 3 teams had all lost one match. Cumnor were the winners with 35 progressed this season, despite playing out of position! My player of the tournament was Rosie and Josie today, points and Brambletye (2nd) and Copthorne (3rd) both with the top goal scorer being Sheen! finished on 33 points. With a tie on points the positions were decided by goal average. U8 Tag Rugby Tournaments at Well done to all the girls today a super effort and a fantastic display of netball. Team: Alana, Beth, Emily, Ruby, Pennthorpe & Windlesham Gabi, Mallory, Alayna and Freya. It’s been an extremely busy week for the U8s with two tournaments in just two days. It turned out to be an U11B Netball v BHHS extremely successful couple of days with all the boys playing their part in almost bringing two trophies home. Lost 1-17 Tuesday afternoon saw the boys travel to Pennthorpe for The U11Bs played their away match against BHHS yesterday. BHHS put out an extremely strong B team and their annual Year 3 tag tournament involving 6 teams. Everything started really well with a convincing 8-5 possibly an A team! Unfortunately the Copthorne girls victory over the Pennthorpe Panthers with some great were outclassed in all areas of the court and although rugby being played and it was a sign of things to come. they battled on they lost 17 - 1. Although they probably couldn't have beaten this side, with a little more urgently Game two saw a close 2-2 draw with Reigate 2s, Copthorne just missing out on the winning try in the final they might have kept the score down. moments as the ball was put down agonisingly close to Well done Tia, Tali, Tanishka, Shriya, Leah, Macie and Leah who didn't give up and a great cheer went up when the try line. It was straight onto game 3 against Pennthorpe Pumas. Copthorne looked as if they had Tia scored their goal! Well done girls. secured victory but Pennthorpe scored with the final play of the game to secure a draw. A break was then followed U13 Versatility Tournament at Brambletye by an excellent victory against Reigate 1s with Copthorne Well what an exciting afternoon of versatility we had always in the lead and winning the game 7-6 with a very today, from start, to finish! The girls were placed into two good performance. The final game against eventual pools, with 12 minute matches been played (6 minutes winners Longacre was an up and down affair with per half) with the girls moving round position after each Copthorne always in the lead up until the last minute. half a match! With the boys leading by two tries, two careless mistakes Copthorne took on Ardingly in the first match and were cost us both times and a draw which seemed like a slow to being with but after a change of positions at half convincing victory a moment before was difficult to take time (following a set rotation) Copthorne clawed the and was probably the difference between us winning the game back despite being behind, proving that anything tournament and coming third. It was still a great effort by all the boys and a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon of rugby without any losses whatsoever. Wednesday saw the boys take the long journey to Windlesham looking to build on the momentum from the previous day. In glorious sunny conditions the first game was a success with a great 5-4 victory over Brighton Prep. The second game saw us up against St Christopher’s, a team we had been well beaten by earlier in the season. The game showed how much the boys have improved since that day with St Christopher’s having to dig really deep to come up with a try in the final play of the game to draw 3-3. A short break followed but then it was onto game 3 of the day against the Windlesham Wolves. A close game saw Copthorne run out 4-3 winners and they were to win the following game against Lancing Prep by the same score line. Game 5 saw us just lose out to eventual winners Holmewood House, once again in the last play of the game. A final push saw a well-deserved victory against Windlesham Wizards by 4 tries to 3 put an end to an eventful afternoon. Third place could and perhaps should have been first place with Copthorne playing the best rugby of any team on the day. As with all tag rugby, bitter blows can be struck even when the time has run out. Well done to all the boys who took part over the 2 days. A total of 6 wins, 4 draws and 1 loss with nearly 50 tries scored in just 11 games shows just how successful we were and the boys should all be proud of their efforts. Players: Arun G, Alex S, Charlie G, Matthew W, Rex R, Henry L-S, Harry L, Marcus O-B, John H U10 Rugby v Duke of Kent The final game of the season gave us the opportunity to bring together an extended squad to include all the players who had represented the A team throughout a successful season. The sun had it's hat and was coming out to play which put everyone in high spirits. It was evident from the first play of the game that we would spend much of the match in control as the boys scored from the set move called 'sausages'. Three further scores in the first 5 minutes gave us the opportunity to bring on our 4 subs earlier than expected. One of the highlights of the season took place towards the end of the first half as we scored a try from a set move from a scrum that started in our own half and went through every boys hands down the line for Wesley to score in the corner. We finished the half 7-0 up. The second half followed a similar pattern but to the credit of Duke of Kent they never gave up and were rewarded for the efforts as they scored a try. We continued to use the rolling sub policy meaning everyone could enjoy the last match. It is always nice to finish with a win and a 12-1 margin reflected the control the boys had. I would like to thank Duke of Kent for their commitment and courage throughout the afternoon. Tries: Luke 3, Nick 3, Wesley, Sam P, Chris, William, James, Shams. It has been a pleasure to coach these boys this season and what is clear to see is that we are not a one dimensional team who just give it to the same player. Everyone one of the boys brings something different to side meaning we have the opportunity for tries to be scored from everyone on the teamsheet. The afternoon ended with a well deserved team photo being taken to commemorate a remarkable season. I am sure that all the parents would agree that this has been a very successful season both in terms of results and the development of the boys skills both as individuals and as a TEAM. Under 10 A Squad: Sam P, Sam R, Wesley S, William C, Luke F, Nicholas C, Archie M, Matthew B, Chris F, Shams K, James V, Ruari F U11 Rugby v Duke of Kent The final regular game of the season took place under beautiful sunshine and the boys were looking forward to putting right a few wrongs from last week against Brambletye. We started well with Antony crossing the try line from a set piece place and were soon two tries to the good when Louis executed a superb dummy play from another set piece. All that training seemed to be paying off! With the final play of the half Duke of Kent were awarded a scrum and took advantage of a narrow defensive line to run around and score in the corner to reduce the deficit. We started the brighter of the two teams again and Louis popped up on Alex’s shoulder, broke a couple of tackles and touched down to extend the lead to 3-1. Kent’s strong runner, and captain, enjoyed a purple patch helping himself to two tries to level the game at 3 all with only 5 minutes left to play. From the restart we retained the ball well before feeding Luca out wide, who evaded a would be high tackle to score in the corner. With only 30 seconds left to play the Kent captain, once again, got up a head of steam and deservedly scored after some strong running. With the scores level at 4-4 there was still time for one last “winner takes all” play. Unfortunately for us, some solid defence from Kent kept us at bay and we were eventually tackled in to touch. A draw was probably a fair reflection on the game as I don’t believe we did enough in attack to warrant the win. There were far too many dropped balls and we didn’t learn to double up on their captain in the tackle. Overall, I am pleased with how this season has developed. As a small year group it is always difficult to compete against the bigger school but we have certainly held our own and even beaten the majority of similar sized schools. This Friday is the 7’s tournament at Brighton College, however the matches will be taking place next door to Whitehawk Football Club and next Wednesday will be the Interhouse rugby competition which you are all welcome to come and watch. Thank you again for the support from the parents and well done to the 11 boys who took to the field. Try scorers: Louis (2), Antony and Luca U12 Rugby v Duke of Kent Won 5-0 What a way to finish a season! It is a pleasure to report on the performance of the season. It was clear from very early on in this match that the Duke of Kent certainly knows how to tackle! Rather like Brambletye, whatever we threw at them throughout this match they were willing to tackle, tackle and tackle again. This resulted in a prolonged deadlock with both sides attempting to play positive, attacking rugby but failing to get as far as the try line. Eventually, Austin led by example, taking the ball on the half-way line and stepping inside and outside of several tackles and running straight through others he made it all the way to score our opening try. Our attack in this first half was rather too narrow and we were not using the support runners available to the ball carrier – ie we were not passing enough! So the score was still 1-0 at half-time. After the break, the boys really showed that they had listened and the last quarter turned out to be a very impressive all-round display. Ben tackled like a demon all afternoon and was always difficult to stop with the ball in hand. He made a lovely outside break mid-way through the second half after Karan had secured the ball well and he was well supported by Austin who, as a result, went over for our second try. Sam S sensibly dropped back when needed as full back which enabled him to show off his elusive running with ball in hand as well as turning in another impressive demonstration of the art of tackling. Alex again showed great determination and aggression in possession and added some nifty footwork to his repertoire. Today he also linked much better with his teammates and it was following a break by him, support play by Sam D and Jacob that Ben was able to score our third. Joseph was also linking well and Charlie continued to throw outrageous dummies as he was done all season and this enabled him to make good ground on a number of occasions. Luca, as usual, did a great job of securing possession at numerous breakdowns as well as going on several rampaging charges with the ball in hand. He tackled superbly as well. Following another break by Ben, Alex was in support and passed to Luca who went over from close range for try number 4. The icing on the cake was also supplied by Ben who ripped the ball from a maul near our own line and then ran the length of the pitch swerving left and right to avoid the last tackler. Throughout, Jacob did a great job of orchestrating our set moves and linked well with his outside backs. This was a real team performance and the culmination of a lot of hard work in training but Man of the Match has to go to Ben this week for an outstanding all-round display. It has been a pleasure to coach this group and they really deserve a hard fought victory today against a stubborn opposition. Final score Duke of Kent 0 – 5 Copthorne. Well done all! Cumnor 7s A really good performance from the boys although we lost 3 games they were all by a single try which was tough to take against some of the best sides in the area. Interesting tournament under the new RFU regs as no medals and no winners which was somewhat strange to most of us. Still a good day and a lot of fun. U13 Rugby v Duke of Kent What a beautiful day to finish the season on, sunshine, a dry pitch and no wind after all the miserable weather we had to endure in the early part of the year. The boys were certainly up for their last game of rugby for Copthorne. The game was a bit one sided as the boys ran in 3 tries in the first few minutes. To their credit they maintained their discipline and continued to play good rugby throughout the game winning clean ball and running in tries from the backs. Thanks for the understanding of Zac and Dan who left the fray early and also Kieron for similar reasons. A comfortable win at the end of a most successful season with only the one try defeat to Great Walstead spoiling an unbeaten season, having said that we did the same to the last year. It has been a pleasure to coach this year and a big thank you to Mr Jenkins for his invaluable input throughout. I hope that the boys will continue to play at their senior schools as there is clearly a lot of talent here. Thanks for the support and the touch line banter. Have a good Easter break and back for cricket in the summer. Congratulations to Mrs Jenks and the U9A Netball Team who won the Caterham Tournament on Thursday afternoon!!
