SOL 2.4 Map Skills locating where Powhatan, Lakota, and Pueblo are located on a map of USA Each group used their environment in different ways. Country or Region Climate EASTERN WOODLAND The Eastern Woodlands had mild winters and hot, humid summers. PLAINS The Plains had hot summers and harsh, cold winters. SOUTHWEST The Southwest had hot days, cold night, and little rainfall. 2 Environment: Land / Water Features Culture The Eastern Woodlands had rivers, hills, mountains, and coastland. There were forests and a variety of plant life. The Plains had flat land with few trees, prairies, rolling hills, and grasses. The Southwest was mostly high flatlands with cactus. The Powhatan farmed, fished, hunted, used trees for homes and canoes, and gathered plants for food. The Lakota moved around the region and used horses for transportation. The Pueblo farmed the land and lived in villages in adobe (clay) houses. QUESTIONS: 1. What were the E. Woodlands and the Plains region different? 2. How is the climate in the E. Climate: the kind of weather an area has over a long period of time. Environment: surroundings like trees, roads, buildings, mountains, and rivers. Land: the part of the Earth’s surface that is not water. 3 ♦ United States is located in North America. ♦ Powhatan lived in the Eastern Woodlands Regions of the US. ♦ Lakota lived in the Plains Regions of the US. ♦ Pueblo people lived in the Southwest Region of the US. SOL 2.5 Locate continents, oceans, and regions of the world and USA Maps can be used to locate land and water features. Maps and globes help people to study the Earth. The Seven Continents: North America, South America, Antarctica, Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe The Oceans: Arctic Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean, Southern Ocean Rivers, Mountain ranges, and lakes of the US: Locate JAMES RIVER, MISSISSIPPI RIVER, RIO GRANDE Locate APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS AND THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS Locate GREAT LAKES Continent: a large body of land on the Earth. Equator: an imaginary line that goes from east to west around the middle of the Earth. 4 THE UNITED STATES 5 SOL 2.6 Map Skills: People who make maps include a map title, map legend, and compass rose. A map is a flat drawing that shows what places look like from above and where they are located. A map legend included symbols that represent objects and places. (map key) Compass rose: a symbol that shows direction on maps and globes. Map legend: a list of shapes and symbols used on a map and an explanation of what each stands for. Map title: the name or kind of map. SOL 2.10 Good Citizenship A good citizen has a varied of responsibilities: Respecting and protecting the rights and property of others Taking part in the voting process when making classroom decisions. Tell how actions can improve the school and community (ex: picking up trash) Having self discipline and self reliance (doing things independently with confidence) Practicing honesty and trustworthiness 6 QUESTIONS: 1. How can you be a good citizen at school? 2. If your class wants to play one game and there are many choices, what would be the best way to decide on one game? SOL 2.12 Government Voters in Virginia’s cities and counties elect officials to make decisions for them in the state and local government. People living in VA have different ethnic origins, customs, and traditions and participate in the communities by practicing the responsibilities of being a good citizen. All people even though they are different, are united as Americans by common goals and traditions.
