Select a set of 20 sight word cards to use for this center. For easy reference, see page 79 for sight words by grade level. Make two copies of the spaghetti mat and color each of them. (You may want to copy them on card stock or laminate for durability.) Copy a class supply of record sheets. Place the spaghetti mats, word cards, and pom-poms in the shoe box. Glue the label to one end of the shoe box and the student directions to the inside of the lid. I ntroduce this activity by reading On Top of Spaghetti by Paul Brett Johnson (Scholastic Press, 2006), a print adaptation of the traditional song. Directions (For 2 players) 1 Each player takes a spaghetti mat. 2 Stack the word cards facedown. 3 Take turns following these directions: 22 Take a card and read the word. 22 If you read it correctly, place a “meatball” (a pom-pom) on your spaghetti. If not, do not take a meatball. 22 Place the word card to the side. Play until there are no more cards. 4 Count your meatballs to see who wins. Then play again.
