Dear Parents and Carers,
You may be aware that the government has recently announced that all schools must become academies by
2020. Whilst the Education Minister has appeared to make u-turns in thinking, Medway as an authority had
previously had direction to become fully academised.
You might be thinking about what this means for our school. The short answer is very little on the surface.
The Governing Body has had this under review for some time and has met to discuss options open to the
school following the recent Government White Paper. St. John Fisher has worked to form its own school
improvement networks and has developed strong leadership at all levels including governance. For this
reason, we see very little change should the school convert to a Single Status Academy under the new
Government ruling. The school would be funded directly from the EFA (Education Funding Agency), resulting
in monies currently being top sliced to the authority remaining in the school purely for the schools’ use.
As such, the Governors are currently working with the Diocese to explore the option of becoming a single
status academy which is linked via the Dioceses to other similar schools, in a collaborative capacity.
Following the announcement in last month’s newsletter that I will be moving on at the end of the academic
year to De La Salle Catholic School and Language College in Basildon, the governors have successfully
appointed Dympna Lennon as Headteacher from September 2016.
We welcome Ms. Lennon to our St. John Fisher community and I know you will all make her very welcome.

Good Samaritan Mass
On Tuesday 26th April, a small number
of Vinnies from Year 8 together with the
Chaplaincy team were invited to represent
our school at the Good Samaritan Mass at St.
George’s Cathedral, Southwark.
Mass was celebrated by Bishop Patrick Lynch
and other members of the clergy from the
diocese. The main theme of the Mass was
helping others which enabled The Catholic
Children’s Society to introduce the launch
of their new CRISIS Fund which has been
approved by Archbishop Peter Smith.
End of Key Stage 5 Mass
On May the 3rd Year 13 gathered together for their Celebration
Community Mass. This was to mark the end of key stage 5.
Mass was celebrated by Father Baker and was the last Mass
year 13 will have together as a year group. Speeches were
given by Head Boy, Connor Russell and Head Girl, Mary Leach
in praise and thanks for the opportunities and achievements
at St. John Fisher and all the fond memories of year 13 as a
year group.
Chaplaincy wishes year 13 every success with their exams and the future months ahead.

News From Chaplaincy (cont.d)
May is the Month of Mary.
As we approach the end of May, let us not forget this lovely month is dedicated to Mary Mother of Jesus.
So to celebrate this occasion Chaplaincy has chosen a poem especially for Our Lady.
MAY IN BLOOM
May is so beautiful:
Orchards are fair;
Branches of fruit trees
Make gardens of air.
Flowers of fragrance
Bloom in the light;
Fall like the snowflakes
Showering white.
Orchards of heaven
Grow with a grace,
And like a blessing
Perfume the place.
Each tree in blossom,
Each lovely spray,
In this month of Our Lady,
Bring glory to May.
Helen Maring
The Magnificat. Volume LXVIII.
Number 1. May 1941.
Also, we should remember our Key Stage 4 and 5 students, who are currently sitting their exams. Chaplaincy
has lit a candle for them every day to give them the strength and wisdom they need in this stressful period
of their lives.
God Bless

What are members of the St John Fisher Community reading?
Luke Hockey Year 9 St Rose
Mr O Williams ~ LSA
Scorpia ~ Anthony Horowitz
Hard Times ~ Charles Dickens
Scorpia is the fifth book in the Alex Rider
series. Alex Rider is a teenage spy who travels
to Venice to discover the truth about his past.
Discovering that the truth lies with a criminal
group called Scorpia, Alex finds himself with
a difficult choice - work for MI6 again, or go
against everything he believes in.
Hard Times is set in the fictional Yorkshire
location of Coketown. The novel is a social
commentary on Victorian England, and shows
us how difficult life was in the 19th Century.
Dickens focuses on the lives of the inhabitants
of Coketown and shows us how every one of
their actions has an effect on other members
of the community; which indeed is a lesson
that still holds true to this day.
You should read this novel, particularly if
you have an interest in English history in the
Victorian era, or if you love a good story that
illustrates how even the smallest decision can
have a big impact on the people
around you.

Dear Parent/Carer,
Despite the intensive work done in school and recent messages placed in the
newsletter regarding safe use of social media, we have had cause to involve the
police over the past few weeks due to students making naive choices. Could we
ask again that you speak to your children about the dangers of adding unknown
people as contacts and sharing images or personal information via social media.
Please feel free to contact us at the school if you have any concerns you wish to
discuss.
Many thanks,

‘The Variety Show’
There was a wealth of talent displayed at the ‘The Variety Show’
on the evening of 29th April 2016. BTEC Performing Arts Students
entertained a large audience with the acts that they had worked hard
rehearsing over a 2 month period. There really was lots of variety
from contemporary dance to magic tricks. They had so much material
the show could have run until well after 8:30pm!
We would like to say a big “thank you” to all the parents, guardians
and friends of St John Fisher who came to support the students and
to the students themselves for their hard work and dedication to the
Performing Arts. We hope to see you next time.

READATHON 2016
Over a four week period we ran a READATHON for our Year 7 and 8
students.
Students were sponsored to read as many books as possible during this
time.
READATHON divides the money between four children’s charities: CLIC
Sargent, Readwell, Together for Short Lives and Roald Dahl’s Marvellous
Children’s Charity.
Our school also receives free books worth 20% of our donation.
As a school we raised £48, with one of our Year 7 students reading an
impressive 13 books.
A big thank you to all students who took part.

Maths Investigation
Team leaders Seyi Browne, Kelsey Holland and Callum Dunn headed up an investigation task for their
maths class this term. 8Ma6 were asked to investigate how far they could throw bean bags: in doing so,
the teams came up with hypotheses and thought of ways in which they could collect their data whilst
reducing bias. The teams considered factors such as: sample size; how to measure distance; whether
gender or height would affect distance; and what to do when the bean bag slides! They collected their
data in grouped frequency tables and used these in order to come up with conclusions. The class were
judged for their team work, so the pupils did a fantastic job of promoting inclusion and progress for all –
well done 8MA6.

The Human Form.
Year 8 have been looking at The Human Form in Art this term. They have
been doing speed drawings-observational work done in 60 seconds,
2 minutes, 5 minutes etc. The rationale behind this is well-known as
when one draws at speed, one focuses with great concentration, it is a
wonderful exercise to develop hand eye coordination and we also call
it brain training, as students have not only had to draw at speed, but
rules such as using 1 continuous line, drawing with the wrong hand,
drawing with both hands at once and drawing ‘blind’ which relies on your
short term memory and ability to focus.
The photographs show some gorgeous A2 self-portraits the students have
been working on. They have been allowed to use only one colour, then
show form, depth, shape and 3Dimensions by using shades of that one
colour. This is incredibly difficult as not only must you be able to work in
a controlled way, in terms of adding white to create the array of shades,
but putting the shades in the right places to create the desired form and
depth.
I am proud of their progress and the students have been enjoying working
on a prolonged piece of Art and they have also enjoyed having to work
independently to refine and modify their artwork.
The students have been terribly supportive of one another and have “buddied”
one another, when someone has been struggling and they have been sharing
ideas and ways of creating shades.
Enjoy looking at their work and the students are more than welcome to take
their portraits home once finished.
