WICKED WRITERS
Welcome to this term’s Wicked Writers’ Magazine. We hope you enjoy reading
the fantastic pieces of writing produced by our BVS pupils.
February saw some of the heaviest snowfall for over ten years. Miss Vincent’s Literacy Group were inspired:
WALKING THROUGH SNOW
by
Georgia Moore 6LV
Softly, I walk across the delicate, white blanket of snow. As I step I hear crunching sounds.
I’m excited. For a second I see a puff of steam like smoke from a fire. I wait for a moment
before I realise it’s me breathing.
Carefully, I walk on to find the snow all glittery, crumbly like sorbet. I rub my eyes just in
case I’m dreaming. To my amazement I can see other footprints both human and animal. I
walk on …
MY WALK IN THE SNOW
by
Rebecca Smyth 6DB
The snow was like a blanket of icing sugar on a white wedding cake. As the flakes fell they
twirled elegantly like a ballerina.
Walking through the snow it was as if I was in a world of my own. The only sound came
from my footsteps crunching. The snow was dead silent like a predator hunting for its prey.
As the day brightened I looked in the distance and stretched out in front of me was glittering
fairy dust, but I was mistaken, it was the sun gleaming on the crystals of ice!
SNOW WALK
by
Denise Mensah 6LV
Crunch! My foot landed on the fluffy, crystal, sparkling snow. Magical snowflakes twirled and
swirled as they danced and floated.
Snow covered everywhere. Trees were sprinkled and drizzled with the sieved white powder.
I was blinded by the beauty of the day.
Year 6 were given the task to write to Mrs Kennington about her plans to radically change school holidays:
I PROTEST ...
by
Alice Evans 6LV
Dear Mrs Kennington,
Rearranging the school year is totally and utterly uncalled for. In fact it is unacceptable.
I have discussed the matter with many others and they too have realised that four terms instead of three is an infringement of our human rights. Furthermore, reducing the summer
holiday would be a disaster because the children enjoy the sun and not the dull winter
weather.
This new idea is not popular with the teachers either. Surprisingly, teachers need a break
too and the summer holiday is a perfect time for teachers to refresh themselves and relax!
More often than not families go away together for the summer holidays to recharge their
batteries and spend some quality time together (two weeks is not enough time). Therefore,
any change from the current amount of time will be strongly opposed. So, you see, adjusting
the school year would be unwanted by all at B.V.S. Please consider my idea.
Yours sincerely,
Alice Evans
I WOULD PREFER …
by
Jack Cheshire 6LV
Dear Mrs Kennington,
I understand that you are proposing to change the school year.
As a student, I would prefer the school year to stay the same as at present. I find the year
with the long summer holiday to be beneficial because the six weeks break allows students
to relax and get ready for the changes that the next school year will bring.
To have the six weeks holiday in July and August gives, hopefully, the best weather, and
therefore more time for children to spend outside rather than sitting inside. This should
mean that children will get a lot more exercise rather than spending the time watching television or using game consoles.
Also, having six weeks together in one holiday gives families more choice about when they
can have a vacation together. If the school holidays were shorter, this could be harder to fit
in with working schedules and could mean more holidays during term time.
I hope my thoughts are of value.
Yours sincerely,
Jack Cheshire
Year 5 have been writing alternative fairy stories:
HANSEL, GRETEL AND THE THREE BIRDS
by
Charlotte Clarke 5FJ
Many moons ago, in a forest, lived a very poor woodcutter with his second wife, Griselda,
and his two precious children, Hansel and Gretel. They all lived in a drafty old cottage on the
edge of the dark and noisy forest. It was a real squeeze getting in, but they managed it.
One particularly gloomy day, a terrible famine swept the village and reached the Lewis family,
causing serious hunger pains. As the kids were tucking themselves in on the third night of the
famine, they heard their sly, wretched step-mother talking to their beloved father rather quietly. Afraid, Gretel gently woke Hansel and together they listened silently to what their stepmother and father had to say.
“Honey, there is NOT another way!”, Griselda almost yelled.
“But…”
“No! We take them to the woods and leave them there! That is FINAL.” Griselda was yelling
now.
How stupid she is, Hansel thought, to think we will not hear that. The next day, Gretel woke
up, her eyes tear-stained. She was shaking violently.
“What are we going to do? We shall die in those woods.” Gretel wept.
“Don’t worry, I’ve got an idea,” Hansel comforted her. That morning Griselda told Hansel
and Gretel to get out of bed as they were going to the woods. As she said this, Gretel glanced
at Hansel anxiously. So they all set off, wrapped up warm, but Hansel was not bothered by
the warmth, his attention was on something else. Crumbling the only piece of bread he had,
he left a trail of breadcrumbs. Little did he know his plan would be foiled… Deeper and
deeper into the woods they went, until finally, Mr Lewis set up a fire for his treasures and
went to search for wood.
Hansel and Gretel waited ‘til nightfall, then got to their feet to look for the breadcrumbs but,
to their astonishment, the breadcrumbs were gone! All of them!
“No! No! No! The breadcrumbs have gone and I know not where we are!” Hansel shouted.
“Calm down, it shall all turn out well!” replied Gretel.
After walking for hours on end, they came to a small sweet shop with seven doors.
“How confusing!” Gretel whispered under her breath. Suddenly, three birds started talking to
them.
“No! Witch! In there! Nooooo!” they squawked.
“OK! Chill! We won’t go in!” the kids yelled “but you have got to show us the way home!”
“OK! My name is Polly,” the first bird said.
“My name is Pelly,” the second bird squawked.
“And my name is Potty,” the third bird shrieked.
“Our names are Hansel and Gretel,” Hansel said.
After two whole days of walking and talking, Hansel and Gretel got home to their pleased father. Griselda had mysteriously disappeared, and they kept the three talking birds as pets. So
I guess, they all lived happily ever after!
Just before the Christmas holidays we did a piece of Big Writing based upon an ornament or tree decoration coming to life and the adventures which ensued:
FATHER CHRISTMAS
by
Becky McPhee 6PD
The sound of the song on the radio woke me up. I’ve been asleep for ages. Stretching, the smell
of cookies hit my nose. I looked around only to see a present and stockings, “Cookies!”. The
magnificent taste of them was impossible to resist, so I decided I was going down to eat some.
I slowly and carefully unhooked myself. Plunging towards the ground made my stomach turn
inside out. It isn’t actually as easy as it looks on TV after all. A stick of candy hooked on to my
neatly straightened trousers. I could still see the sensational cookies out of the corner of my eye,
so I decided to definitely continue my journey down the tree. Suddenly, I got hooked on to
some tinsel and I spun round and round until I reached a grotesque, coloured bauble and
smashed into it with a very loud ‘crash!’
Finally, reaching the bottom of the tree, I fell into a toy train carriage which was circling the bottom of the tree. The only thing that kept me going was the thought of having some glorious
cookies when I reached the bottom. After going round the circuit for the third time, I noticed
the switch to turn it off. I waited until I got nearer to it, grabbed the candy stick and then hit the
switch, not realising that I’d hit the button that speeds the train up. ‘Oh dear!’
Continuing to go round the track, the train missed the corner and instead went down the wrong
track. Disaster!
SANTA
by
Coral Coutts 5FJ
On one snowy Christmas Eve all was peaceful. A snowman, made by the children, was standing
outside. Inside the house the television was off and the tree was still. But what no one knew was
that on the tree, near the top, was an ornamental Santa who came to life! Suddenly, he woke up
from his extremely long sleep and sniffed. When he smelt the aroma of just baked cookies he
straight away looked round the room and spotted his objective. He had to think of a cunning
plan. Once again he sniffed those tender smelling choc-chip cookies.
How was he going to get down? Amazingly, Santa covered his silvery eyes and undid the pin that
kept him on the tree. He started to fall, then hit a branch which had a red and golden bauble on
it. It fell and shattered into tiny bits of glass. He gulped. He spotted a red and white striped
candy cane which he grabbed. He started to slide down some flashy silver tinsel leaving strands
of foil falling off the tall and branchy tree. On his journey he bumped onto a little train on a
track underneath the tree. Round and round he went speeding like lightning!
CRASH! He smashed onto a pole at the end of the track and fell off the train. He got up, brushing down his suit and hoping that the other ornaments on the tree didn’t see what had happened. He walked calmly to the table where he enjoyed a wonderful feast of crunchy, warm
chocolaty cookies!
FATHER CHRISTMAS
by
Kai Waggott 4LT
One Christmas there was a house and the house was covered with white plain snow. Inside
there was a Christmas tree and I was on it! Suddenly, I smelt something. I looked around
and I saw three delicious, scrumptious, chocolate cookies. My tummy rumbled. I was so, so
hungry. I forgot to tell you I am a Christmas decoration, Father Christmas.
I wanted to get down the Christmas tree to get to the biscuits. I pulled the pin off my bottom, then I covered my eyes. I fell on a bauble and it fell to the floor and crashed into a million pieces! I tumbled on to a candy. Then I fell on to tinsel. I went flying like a rollercoaster. I bumped on to a bauble. I did two backward somersaults on to the train carriage.
I sped round and round and round. I found a candy cane and I tried to hit the off switch,
but I hit a change line switch instead and then I crashed! I flew to the sky and I did ten forward somersaults, then I landed on my bottom …
THE AMAZING ANGEL
by
Caitlin Archer 4LT
It was dark and gloomy in Glovers Lane and there was an angel on top of a tree.
The angel was very beautiful. She had a pair of white, sparkly wings, a white sparkly dress
and a necklace. In the distance the angel could see a few choc-chip cookies, Celebrations
and a glass of fresh milk. “Wow!” gasped the angel. She was surprised! She looked down.
She was very high up. Well I’ve just got to be brave and believe I can do it, she thought. So
the angel flew off the Christmas tree and ‘bump,’ she bumped into Santa decoration who
was quite close to the bottom.
“Oh! I’m very sorry sir. I didn’t mean to hurt you. Can you forgive me?” she asked.
“Of course,’’ replied Santa.
Together they found their way to the bottom of the tree. Unfortunately, they accidentally
stepped into a toy train carriage!
“What shall we do?” cried the angel.
“We’ll jump out,” shouted Santa. “Now I’m going to count 3, 2, 1, jump!’’
Just as they landed a strange sound could be heard coming from the chimney. A man appeared with black boots, a red suit and a red hat with a white pompom on the end.
”He looks like you,” whispered the angel to Santa.
“Quickly let’s get to the biscuits,” he replied.
CHRISTMAS MAGIC
by
Nina Opoku 6DB
Outside there was a delicious, white icing covering everywhere. Trees and bushes
glistened with pure blankness of white and the sun beamed in the shimmering
sky. What a peaceful Christmas.
Struggling I shook out of my statue form and immediately came to life. After a
long ravishing beauty sleep I quietly yawned, then did a little exercise to make my
plastic body more flexible. My current home was the splendid Christmas tree. Its
spiky yet gentle leaves stood swaying side to side with the invisible air. Tinsel protectively wrapped round its trunk.
My nose suddenly twitched, what’s that scrumptious smell? Automatically I
slowly craned my head to see where these mystery biscuits lay! Freshly baked
aromas came twisting to my nostrils and my small tummy rumbled in reply.
I said my prayers and jumped. Tumbling and somersaulting I fell, banging my
head on other decorations and branches. I landed on a very dark, crimson bauble. It fell to the floor and shattered into a million pieces. I looked sideways and
saw a candy cane. Of course, this was the perfect solution for getting those cookies. I jumped to the cane and swung from the tinsel, going round and round,
landing in a carriage of a toy train. Unfortunately, the train developed incredible
speed. I caught a quick glance of the ‘on and off’ switch. I hit the switch but it
was the absolutely wrong switch. It changed the track and I travelled even faster!
The train crashed and I went flying! Up and up I went, straight onto the plate of
cookies! Quickly I grabbed a cookie, jumped off the table and sprinted across
the floor. I took my cane, threw it, and twirled up the mountainous tree, back to
my rightful place. Tired, I bit into a chunk of warm cookie. Mmmm! What a
wonderful Christmas!
FATHER CHRISTMAS
by
Matthew Adam 6DB
It is dark and quiet, everyone is asleep and there is a light snowfall just outside. I am inside. It is nice and cosy next to the blazing crimson red fire. Luminous lights are flashing
next to me, high on the Christmas tree, more dazzling than ever. I am an ornament, but
not just any ornament, I love this time of year. I am Father Christmas!
I have a perfect view of scarlet red stockings and the many presents magnificently
wrapped. Suddenly, without warning, my nose starts to twitch as a divine smell creeps up
my nostrils. I quickly scan the room for this delicious treat and I find newly baked cookies. The only problem is that the scrumptious cookies are on the other side of the room.
How am I going to get all the way over there?
Slowly, I look downwards and realise how high I actually am, but I need to get to those
delicious treats. I cross my fingers, close my eyes and pull the pin that is keeping me in
place.
As fast as lightning I plummet. Luckily I fall on to one of the tree branches. A red ball falls
to the ground shattering into a million pieces. (I’m still quite high up!) I look to my left
and see a candy cane sitting just below me. I start to swing myself back and forth, back and
forth, and then with a mighty leap I soar towards the candy cane holding on with all my
might.
Suddenly, without warning the candy cane starts to move forward and we drop again to be
caught by some tinsel. Very , very quickly the candy cane starts to slide on the tinsel, going
round and round, again and again. But then the sparkling silver tinsel breaks and yet again
I start to fall.
This time I fall all the way to the bottom of the tree and I land on a moving toy train. The
train keeps circling the base of the tree. I spot an on/off switch. Cunningly, I use the cane
to try to switch off the train, but regretfully I miss and accidentally change lanes! At full
speed I am heading for the STOP sign! I hit the blockade, carriage wheeling through the
air. I land, but just then the lights switch on and children come running in. They see me
and pull my string. I felt like I was going to explode. Then, without warning, I blurted out
‘MERRY CHRISTMAS!’
The children put me back on the tree and ate the cookies!!!
Emily and Melissa from Year 4 decided to write about their visit to our Environmental Area:
THE BVS ENVIRONMENTAL AREA
by
Emily Ross 4MC
When we went down to the environmental area, we did some pond dipping with a very
big box and we had long sticks to put in the water. Surprisingly, I did not catch any bugs
but this is what other people caught: a black water beetle, a water boatman and lots more
other exciting and fascinating creatures.
Firstly, we opened the gate and we walked down the brown bark, crunchy path, and
when we got half way there we heard a woodpecker. We walked further into the trees,
and because we were so quiet we were lucky and we heard a baby fox calling for its
mum.
So if you have not been to the environmental area, you should, because when you see it
you will be AMAZED!
THE BVS ENVIRONMENTAL AREA
by
Melissa York 4MC
Down in the Environmental Area it is extremely silent. Sometimes you hear the sound
of the fox cub calling its mother. When you hear it calling it is very relaxing and comforting but also a little frightening.
There are also many other fascinating animals homed in our Environmental Area. We
have a cold, turquoise, still pond. There are lots of animals that live in the pond like water boatmen and pond snails. Different kinds of plants share the pond space, like water
lilies and pond weed. There is a brown platform for when your teacher tells you that you
can go and pond dip.
When you walk round the Area you will find all kinds of different trees, like silver birch
and horse-chestnut. There is a very muddy, marshy part half way round where frogs and
toads have been found hopping, croaking and bouncing across the path in front of the
people walking round.
Early February saw Milton Keynes engulfed in snow. Year 4 wrote acrostic poems:
SNOW
by
Jason Suzen 4MC
Shimmering snow silently falls to the bare ground,
Now snow is falling in fluttering waves,
Over the freezing snow birds fly,
We look out of the window and can’t wait to go out!
SNOW
by
Sam Verity 4MC
Soft, glistening snow falling from the
bright grey sky,
SNOW
by
Kurtis Bull 4KL
Never lasting snow flutters from the dark
clouds,
Shimmering, glimmering, amazing snow,
Noiselessly, flakes spin to the floor,
Over the fields and trees the sparkling
crystals gleam,
Over the bare, bony tree tops,
Wonderful snow!
White blankets the school fields.
SNOW
by
Lydia Day 4KL
Shimmering flakes fall onto the icy grass,
Noiseless crystals fall from the sky,
Over the roof tops waves of snow flutter,
Why is snow so beautiful?
Our first piece of Big Writing this term involved composing a Newspaper Article about Unidentified Flying Objects appearing in the skies above BVS!
BRADWELL VILLAGE SCHOOL STUNNED BY UFO SIGHTING
by
Jack Marner 5FJ
On Monday at 9.30am the children at BVS were stunned by a strange flying saucer
hovering over the playground. Mr Cliff Stevens was trying to fix a computer when suddenly he saw a glowing object in the sky. He said he had never seen anything like it,
‘’I could just about see their long golden tentacles hanging outside the UFO. I was flabbergasted!’’
Mr Dunkley, a year six teacher, explained, “I was just about to give out homework
when a child in my class saw a shining golden light.”
People were saying it could be an aeroplane or a hot air balloon, but the teachers disagreed. Whatever was hovering in the sky above Bradwell is obviously going to remain
a mystery!
UFO FLYING OVER BVS
by
Afifa Ali 5FJ
One morning at 9:30, Mrs Kennington, the Headteacher of the school, was doing
some paperwork. As she gazed out of the window, something caught her eye.
There was a UFO flying over the school field and the children were all standing on the
playground staring up at it.
Mrs Kennington couldn’t believe her eyes; she rushed out of her office and into the
freezing cold weather. When she arrived at the school field she looked up at the sky.
There was a gigantic UFO behind the clouds.
It had shimmering lights that were twinkling. But no one could see it properly because
of the lights. Behind the thick clouds, a long, purple, slimy tentacle came out.
It was very cold outside, so Mrs Kennington said, “Come on children, go inside and do
your work.” The staff and children had never seen anything like that before. Mrs Kennington returned to her office wondering whether the thing would go or stay….
UFO SEEN OVER BRADWELL
by
Chantel Serevena 5FJ
A UFO was reported hovering over the BVS school field this morning just after
9:30am. The UFO was seen by two hundred children and the thirteen teachers.
Mrs Kennington came outside and wondered why all the children were not inside doing their work.
Mr Paul Dunkley said, “It was really weird how all of a sudden this thing just
came into the sky out of the blue!”
Mrs Kennington stated, “It might have been an aeroplane, a lantern from the local park at Heelands or a hot air balloon.”
The UFO stayed hovering over the field for about half an hour, when suddenly
one of the school children shouted, “LOOK!”. Everyone was totally flabbergasted when they saw five flashing lights disappearing into the distance.
UFO HITS BVS
by
Elle Buckledee 5FJ
Last Monday afternoon children from Bradwell Village School were playing on
the school field when suddenly, flying at a supersonic speed, several unidentified
flying objects appeared in the sky!
Mr Cliff Stevens, the site manager, said, “I was in the ICT suite when I noticed
something happening on the playground. I went outside to see what it was. Just
as I got there one of the UFOs just skimmed my head. It was chaotic!”
Miss James stated, “Yes, it’s true, there were flying spacecraft. They had flashing
lights like disco, silver blades, as white as crystal.’’
When Milton Keynes Council came to investigate, they could find no evidence
of UFOs. This is a total mystery!
UFO CAUSES LOCAL SCHOOL TO COME TO A
STANDSTILL
by
Rachel Plose 4KL
Over the field at Bradwell Village School something mysterious happened when
yellow spheres hovered overhead at 9:30 last Monday morning. Sia Sellu, a pupil
at the school, told us, “It was really weird, like the sun had multiplied itself.”
Mr Cliff Stevens captured some of these mysterious objects with his camera. He
reported, “As I was mending a broken computer, out of the corner of my eye I
saw an orange sphere hover outside the window. At first, I thought I was seeing
things, but then I looked closer and saw they were moving swiftly across the playground.”
Marlie Edwards added to this, “I was playing with Katie
and Rachel when I saw an orange flying ball. Rachel told
me there are no such things as UFOs. Katie said it might
be a hot air balloon.” A member of the Milton Keynes
Council stated that the children and staff had imagined
the whole incident.
Mrs Kennington, the Headteacher, thinks differently.
“Whatever it is, UFO or not, it still remains a mystery.”
UFO VISITS BVS
by
Luke Wood 4KL
Yesterday afternoon a UFO was seen hovering over, and landing at, Bradwell
Village School in Milton Keynes. Scientists are puzzled and have stated that they
have never seen anything like this before. They have issued a warning for all people to stay away from the site.
Mrs Kennington, the Headteacher of the school, said, ‘’We have no idea what it
is. It may be an alien spy plane!’’
Mr Stevens, the BVS Site Manager, reported seeing the craft falling from the sky
into the BVS Environmental Area. ‘’It was an amazing sight to see. There is a
massive crater and the ground is blackened.’’
We are waiting for the Government to check their confidential files to see if
there have been any other similar incidents.
