“Experiencing and participating in
the arts can genuinely change the
direction of someone’s life and it is
in our schools that these first encounters should take place” Arts
Council England.
It was an absolute delight to watch
so many of our talented singers,
dancers and musicians perform in our Arts Showcase, led by Mrs Eastwood and Mrs West, on Thursday to an audience of year 4 pupils from
Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St Peter’s. It was a real privilege to witness the incredible diversity of skills and creativity that our pupils have
to offer – they are true ambassadors of St Bede’s. The prominence of
Music and the Arts is extremely important to us as is reflected in both
the wide range of extra-curricular opportunities available and in the
many opportunities for performance throughout the year in our extravaganzas, talent shows and drama production. Mrs Eastwood and Mrs
West have now completed training to deliver the Arts Award in schools
across our partnership. This will enable pupils to work towards and
achieve an accredited qualification in the arts and develop their leadership skills. All of this will support our application for Artsmark Gold Status in the summer term.
I would also like to congratulate the superb achievement of our year 7
netball team who will be representing Redditch at the School Games in
Worcester next month after their fantastic performances on Tuesday
evening. Congratulations also to our year 8 hockey and basketball
teams for their excellent performances and convincing victories this
week.
We are fast approaching the completion of our new Library and Resource Centre which, I am certain, will be an incredibly valuable facility
for our pupils. It combines the traditional elements of the Library
alongside new technologies such as e-readers to provide pupils with a
wealth of reading and research opportunities. We are looking to hold a
grand launch shortly after half term – more details to follow!
We are holding a PTFA meeting on Wednesday 12th March 7pm-8pm.
Our PTFA, set up in 2011, has already made a tremendous impact at St
Bede’s funding projects such as the purchase of a digital piano, refurbishment of the steel drums, soft seating area in the new library, leavers’ trips and many more. Our future plan is to raise money to develop
an outdoor area for the pupils to enjoy which would include seating,
shaded areas and landscaping. Please do come along and get involved!
We have a number of events taking place next half term with Parents’
Evenings, Lenten Charities Day, World Book Day, Stargazing Evening,
Parents’ Forum and our MST Enrichment Day to name but a few so do
keep an eye on our diary dates.
I wish all of our pupils and families a safe and happy half term!

Today is, of course, the feast day of St. Valentine, the
martyred Catholic saint who is best known as the patron of lovers.
But St. Valentine is also the patron of people with epilepsy, an association that’s just as old, but much less
recognized.
Historians offer two versions of how St. Valentine became an “epilepsy saint.” (He’s one of 40 such patrons,
by the way. Apparently, the only other illness with as
many saintly aides is the plague.) Some say it was because his name sounds like “fall” in German, and epilepsy was known as “the falling disease” for centuries.
Education Sunday 16 February 2014, is an opportunity for
schools and parishes to come together
to celebrate and give thanks for all the
students, staff and parents who work so
hard in and for Catholic schools. It is
also a chance for us to reflect upon the
contribution that Catholic education makes to our communities.
A PRAYER FOR EDUCATION SUNDAY
Father
Help us to pray without ceasing, to work without wavering
And to give without grudging, in order to ensure the future
of Catholic Education for all our children.
We make this prayer through your Son, Jesus Christ, our
teacher and our Lord. Amen
CONFIRMATION 2014
Please remember to pray for all the Yr 8 pupils
who are seeking to strengthen their own personal relationships with God as they journey towards making their Sacrament of Confirmation .

Anna Smith, Heike Esparon, Tabassum Khan, Kobe Richards. EmiYear 8 played in the County Hockey Finals at Bromsgrove
School on Tuesday night. They dominated the first game but
despite having over 20 shots only managed a 1 – 0 victory
over St Egwin’s with James Ruddy scoring the goal. The second game was a similar story with Bromsgrove School eventually being defeated 2 – 0. Sam Johnson and Jed Rogers
getting the goals. In a close fought third game St Bede’s lost
1 – 0 to eventual winners Windsor High, with Keeper Owen
Edwards making several superb saves. In the final game St
Bede’s needed to beat St Johns to seal the runners up spot but
could only manage a 0- 0 draw with Owen Edwards again being
the star performer with more excellent saves.
Year 8 Boys’ won the District Basketball after a convincing performance against Birchensale. They started well with Captain Lewis
Leigh scoring several early baskets but it was the superb defence
which kept Birchensale out throughout the game. St Bede’s dominance kept paying off as they kept gradually extending the lead.
Charley Schroeder, Ben Johnson, Sam Johnson, and Jenel Johnson
all contributed to the scoring. Final score 37 – 24. Congratulations
to all the boys who have worked so well as a team to secure this
deserved achievement. Team: Lewis Leigh, Charley Schroeder,
James Ruddy, Max Hombach, Ben Johnson, Owen Edwards, Jed
Rogers, Sam Johnson, Jenel Johnson and Patrick McAuliffe.
