Achievement First
Achievement First is a growing
network of 25 non-profit, college
preparatory K to 12 urban public
charter schools in Connecticut, New
York, and Rhode Island. Their schools
are focused on providing students
with the academic and character skills
they need to graduate from top
colleges in a joyful, structured and
academically
rigorous
school
environment. For the past three years,
100 percent of Achievement First
seniors have been accepted to fouryear colleges and universities. To learn
more about Achievement First’s
schools, students and teammates,
check out these videos.
Achievement First recognizes that
teachers are the key to unlocking
student achievement. Every teacher
at Achievement First—whether a 10year veteran or a recent college
graduate—has a coach. Coaches
provide teachers with individualized
attention to help them achieve their
learning goals for each of their
students. This support is rooted in
great modeling, lesson observation
and feedback, collaboration and coplanning. Teachers also participate in
the Achievement First Teacher Career
Pathway, a systematic, coordinated
approach to recognizing and
developing great teachers as they
progress through five career
stages. To learn about the AF
Teacher Career Pathway, click
here.
Achievement First strives to recruit a
talented and diverse team of
educators. Teachers and school
leaders who share racial and/or
socioeconomic backgrounds with
students are poised to be especially
effective role models, and they bring
an important perspective to school
teams that enhances sensitivity and
cultural competence. Achievement
Chris Friedline, a Marine Corps veteran and
Achievement First Principal-in-Residence,
works with a student at AF Bushwick Middle
School.
First also strives to create an inclusive
working environment in order to
attract talented people from all
backgrounds. You can learn more by
downloading the Diversity and
Inclusiveness Statement and meeting
some outstanding Achievement First
teachers and leaders from the team.

process of developing a professional portfolio as your thesis project, the NAT/
NBCT Specialization will work for you:
 Apply to the University as a graduate student
 Consider when you want to start and end your program
 Chart your course for taking the ten required classes. These parallel the
NBCT timelines for submitting the portfolio
Then complete the core courses:

When?
It’s critical that you observe the schedule for these courses. If you are an active
NBCT candidate, the schedule is designed to parallel your timelines appropriately
as you develop your portfolio in each course and meet the requirements and
submission deadlines.
Why?
The master’s program specialization was designed carefully and thoughtfully to
honor and respect the scholarly work that teachers do when they participate in the
NBCT process. National University encourages you to develop your NBCT
portfolio as part of the required coursework in earning a Master of Arts in Teaching
degree. You deserve an excellent, teacher-centered advanced degree program.
