St. Catherine Church Stained Glass Window Restoration Booklet

Stained Glass Window Restoration
2013-2015
St. Catherine of Siena Church - Broad Brook, CT
Introduction
The stained glass windows of St. Catherine Church
have inspired God’s people since 1881.
Symbolically, the windows are an outward sign of
our unique community. The window designs reflect
our expansive and compassionate spirituality. They
create a sacred space within our church, but they
also enhance the surrounding neighborhood.
Individually handcrafted, they were created through
the generosity of townspeople – farmers and
laborers at the Broad Brook Woolen Company –
hard-working men and women who laid the
foundation of our current building by hand. They
donated the cornerstone of our Church from
brownstone dug from their own land, building a church and a community that
lasts.
Over the years our building has changed – new paint, carpeting, pews, air
conditioning. What have lasted throughout, without change, are our 18
stained glass windows.
After 130 years of wear and tear, the windows were in great need of
restoration. When a stained glass window is between 75 and 100 years old, it
is at the point of requiring restoration by complete re-leading. While the
parish had invested funds to repair major damage as it occurred, these efforts
fell far short of the complete restoration that was needed. The restoration
completed in 2013 will result in another 75 to 100 years of maintenance-free

service life for our windows, which are
appraised at nearly $500,000 in value.
Through the leadership of our thenpastor, Fr. Paul Gotta, we commissioned
an inspection by Stained Glass
Resources, Inc., one of the largest
professional stained glass studios in
New England, and a member of the
Stained Glass Association of America. They have completed over 800 window
restoration projects.
The results of the inspection were as we feared — all of our windows,
especially the two major rose windows above the altar and in the choir loft,
suffered from bowing, buckling, and
bulging; air and water leaks; inoperable
ventilators at the base of side windows; and
aging and deteriorating wood frames. The
cost to renovate all 18 windows was
approximately $255,000.
Stained Glass Resources began the process
of window restoration in the summer of
2011 by carefully removing each window,
photographing and
cataloguing each piece of glass, and carefully restoring
each piece in their studios located in Hampden,
Massachusetts.
PAGE 3
This process took over a year to restore
each piece of glass, including replacing
severely damaged pieces and fabricating
replacement pieces as carefully as
artistically possible to match fit and
original color.
New frames were constructed. In some cases such as the rose window above
the altar, restoration uncovered pieces of glass that had been painted over
through the years, and these were restored to their original condition.
Finally, each window was carefully transported back to St. Catherine for reinstallation in fully-renovated wood and steel frames.
PAGE 4
While Stained Glass Resources was doing its work, Fr. Gotta
commissioned a fundraising project to help defray the cost
of this renovation. Each parish family and each friend of St.
Catherine’s was asked to sponsor the restoration of an
entire window or a portion of a window.
In a little over 3 years, over 400 individual contributors
raised over $243,000 toward the cost of the window
restoration. We are tremendously grateful to each of the
contributors below who have so generously supported this
project. For those who have gone home to the Lord and
whose memories are remembered below, please continue to
pray for the peaceful repose of their souls.
With God’s continued grace, we look forward to another
century of beautiful artwork calling us to worship in our sacred space.
Yours in Christ,
Rev. Daniel Wojtun
Pastor
