Syllabus Spanish II Sra. Lucero/ Room 601 (512) 260260-5500 X 3601 Course Description Welcome to Spanish II! Spanish II is a continuation of Spanish I. For those of you interested in the language, there is a more communication in this level of Spanish. This course will provide you with grammar , communication and listening abilities. The topics we will cover are: the present tense and the past tenses. We’ll use a combination of lectures, videos, presentations, and listening activities. I hope it will make you want to learn more about Spanish. Last of all it should be fun and interesting! Please keep this syllabus in front of your binder! Course Course Objectives • • • • • To develop communicative abilities by integrating the skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing and showing. To learn about and experience other cultures. To use language to acquire new information and knowledge in other subject areas. To learn the nature of language and culture by comparing other languages and cultures with your own. To use language to participate in communities both at home and around the world. There will be a total of 3 tests per six weeks. Check your emails and calendar for test dates. Homework will be given sparingly. Daily work is 40%, homework is worth 10% and tests/projects are worth 50%. How How can I get more information about the class? Final Exam - The final exam will be comprehensive (over every topic we discuss) and will have approximately 150 responses. Remember that your final counts 25% of your total semester grade. Grammar: Affirmative tú commands, present progressive tense, verbs pensar, querer, and preferir, demonstrative adjectives Culture: La arpillera, Joan Miró, Spanish speaking country presentations. 2nd six weeks: (Oct. 9 – Nov. 9) (7B-8A)…Vocabulary: Places to shop, gift items, accessories, buying and selling, talking about the past, places to visit on vacation, things to see and do on vacation, modes of transportation, expressions to talk about vacations. Grammar: preterite of –ar verbs, preterite of –car, -gar verbs, dops: lo, la, los , las, preterite of –er, -ir, verbs, preterite of IR, personal a. Culture: ñanduti, El Greco, Sarapiqui National Park in Costa Rica, Día de los muertos activity. Holiday presentations. 3rd six weeks: (Nov. 12 – Dec. 21) (8B-9A)…Vocabulary:.Recylcing, places in a community, volunteer work, television shows, movie genres, words and expressions to talk about television and movies. Grammar: present tense of decir, indirect object pronouns, preterite of hacer and dar, acabar de + infinitive, gustar + similar verbs. Culture: Peace Corps, Luis Buñueland Salvador Dali, Spanish Christmas Caroling, Churros y Chocolate. Food presentations. 4th six weeks: (Jan. 8 – Feb. 22) (9B-1A)…Vocabulary: Communication terms, computer-related activities and terms, Class activities, classroom rules, school objects, negative and affirmative words. Grammar: present tense of pedir and servir, saber and conocer, stem-changing verbs, affirmative and negative verbs. Culture: Pablo Picasso, Simón Silva, José Martí, Famous person presentations. 5th six weeks: (Feb. 25- March 19) (1B-2A)…Vocabulary: Extracurricular activities, internet activities, verbs to talk about getting ready, things you need to get ready, special events, words to say how you feel. Grammar: making comparisons, saber vs. conocer, hace + time expressions, reflexive verbs, ser vs. estar, possessive adjectives. Culture: Antonio Berni, Diego Rivera, make flour tortillas, 6th six weeks: (April 22 – June 6) (2B-3A)…Vocabulary: shopping, clothing, purchases, places in the community, running errands, items in a sporting goods store, pharmacy products. Grammar: preterite of regular verbs, demonstrative adjectives, using adjectives as nouns, direct object pronouns, preterite IR, SER, preterite HACER, TENER, ESTAR, PODER.
