SPRING 2016 Art Class Descriptions

SPRING 2016
Art Class Descriptions
ArtSmart – PreK - Kinder
ArtSmart is an early learning program that introduces young children to the wonderful world of
art. While building fine motor skills students explore color, texture, shapes, and different types of
art materials and learn to express their ideas through art.
Art After School – Elementary Grades
Using a variety of different mediums and techniques, both 2D and 3D, students will explore
concepts inspired by great artists and their works, delving into color, line, texture and other
elements of art. Through paintings, collage, clay sculpture and other multimedia projects,
students will draw parallels across space and time and experience personalized problem solving
and creative self-expression.
Middle School Art – 5th-8th Grades
Middle school students will be introduced to the advanced skill building within 2-D and 3-D
foundations, which will include developing techniques in drawing, painting, sculpture,
ceramics, and collage. Students will have the opportunity to experiment and refine their skills
and explore observational exercises and age appropriate concepts. Elements and principles of
design will be emphasized in each lesson, as well as higher order critical thinking skills and
problem solving.
Clay Pottery – Kinder – 5th Grade
Clay Pottery provides students with an introduction to working with clay through hands-on
training from a City ArtWorks’ instructor. Students will learn some basic clay, pottery, and
sculpture concepts using different tools and hand-building techniques while creating multiple
projects throughout the semester. This class is designed to help cultivate the students’
creative instinct, fine motor skills and visual proportion by shaping and creating texture with
clay.
Sculpture Magic – Kinder – 5th Grade
The aim of this Sculpture Magic class is to develop a student’s sculpture making ability from
idea to finished state. Students will gain experience working with basic three-dimensional
materials, such as clay and wood, paper, metals, and fiber. Upon completion of this course,
students should be able to effectively manipulate multiple materials and create interesting
and unique solutions to the inherent variations of sculpture. City ArtWorks will provide all the
supplies and tools for the classes.

20th Century Artists: Artistic Style & Heritage
We are excited to share our Spring 2016 curriculum which focuses on 20th Century
Artists. City ArtWork’s age-appropriate lessons introduce the art elements and principles
that vitally influenced innovative, or “avant-garde,” modes of expression that continue to
influence today’s artists. In these fun, hands-on art classes, our lessons will explore
mediums such as drawing/painting, printmaking, 3-D assemblage, collage, fabric work, and
clay sculpture inspired by the work of featured artists. Many of the included artists are
represented in Houston’s public collections, such as the Menil Collection and the Museum of
Fine Arts, Houston.
