MATH
ELA
We have completed the
E.L.A. launch unit about
choosing “just right” books
and have moved into making inferences. Students
will be using background
knowledge, or schema,
and author’s details, or text
evidence, to reach conclu-
sions about theme, character traits, and more. We
will be sharing picture
books and excerpts from
novels and articles as students learn to talk and
write about the many
things they can infer when
reading a great book!
SOCIAL STUDIES
SCIENCE
The students did a fantastic job learning
the Land Bridge Theory and how our first
Americans came from Asia to settle the
New World. We are continuing the explorers
unit by discovering how international trade
led explorers from Europe across the sea
seeking trade routes, including that famous
voyage when Christopher Columbus landed
in North America thinking he was in the Indies. We’ll end the unit with the accomplishments of several different explorers ( and
our UNIT TEST) before beginning the next
unit, “Settlement.” Study will focus on:
We are finishing our
Weather Unit. Ms. Wilson’s
class took the weather test at
the end of last week and Mrs.
Watson’s classes will take the
weather test this Tuesday,
Sept. 16th! Note: We are
doing a science lab activity
each Monday that relates to
the unit of study.
*The Columbian Exchange
*How and where settlements from different European countries were established
in what is now the United States and
Canada and how their structures and
customs compared
*The introduction and spread of slavery
in the New World and its similarities and
differences from indentured servitude.
Next, we will start our
Astronomy unit! We will learn
the following concepts:
*Order of the planets as
they orbit the sun; How are
the planets alike and different?
*How the Earth moves and
why we have day and night
*Shadows/Changes in a
shadow throughout the day.
*Why does the Earth have
seasons?
We are continuing our
unit called: “Numbers and
Operations: Addition and
Subtraction”.
The students are learning place value up through
the millions place. We will
continue to work on rounding numbers to the nearest
10, 100, 1,000, 10,000,
and 100,000.
We have also started to
add multi-digit numbers.
We are using a “count up”
strategy using a number
line. The children are
learning how to do “mental
math.”
We will also be subtracting whole numbers
using the “count up on a
number line” strategy.
We will work on additional strategies as well
including:
*Making a nice number/compensation strategy when subtracting
*Left to right subtraction
with regrouping at the
bottom
