Forty Hill - Homework Grid Year: 6 Weekly Homework: Topic: Literacy & Communication Reading Spring Term 1 Spelling Topic: Go With The Flow -Rivers Maths Learning Opportunities Create a character description for one of the main characters in Floodland- draw a portrait as you see the character in your mind eye and label with features, personality and feelings- use evidence form the books to support your statements. Write a personification poem about a storm. Think about what human qualities a storm could have and how you can create vivid images of the build up and actual storm using the personification technique. You can also illustrate this around the edge of the poem. Write a letter from Zoe in Floodland to her parents on the mainland after they left her on the island of Norfolk. Describe your day-to-day life nd your hopes for the future. RE & PSHE Focus on the Sacrament of Baptism, and your own personal experience of this or a birth ceremony from another world faith. Think about who, when, how and the related symbols for this event. Research the link between Rivers and Religion and create a mindmap looking at the role of rivers in some religions and their significance to those following these religions. Why are rivers spiritually important? How are they used in the traditions and practices of different religions? Science and the Outside environment (Science, Research and produce an information report on a specific river creature. Include which art of the river it lives in, its diet, life span, appearance and part in the various food chains of the river habitat. Also include a detailed diagram, labelling its specific features . Find out about our local river, the River Lea. How is it an important part of our local environment? What has it been used for in the past and how is it used now? Maybe find some photographs and use this to enhance your research. River collage- using a range of recycled materials, create a river collage to show the different parts/ habitats in a river, including the varying textures and colours. Create a leaflet about Adaptation- this must include a definition then an example of a fish, a mammal, a bird and an insect, and look at the features these river creatures have and how they help them thrive and survive in the river environment. Our Value for January is Caring. Produce a poster to encourage and give guidance to children at Forty Hill on how to be caring and why this is so important to your learning and your life. Think about practical examples of what caring looks like and the affect it can have on others. Choose an area of climate change to find out about e.g deforestation, recycling, solar power etc. Imagine you are given 5 minutes to persuade the government to take these issues more seriously- write a persuasive and informative speech to change the world! Choose a famous world river, and create a bookmark that includeds information and pictures about this significant river. (Speaking and listening, language and literacy) PE, Healthy lifestyles, Eco issues and investigation) Humanities (History, Geography, Moral & Social and Economic Awareness) Creative Arts (Art, Design & technology, Music, Drama & Dance) Produce a beautiful and educational diagram piece of art to show the clear stages on the journey of the river. Ensure it is labelled and includes specific geographical vocabulary. Handel’s Water Music- what is Handel’s Water Music? Listen to it, and explain how the music captures the essence of water through different instruments, sounds and techniques. Include this in a short review about this piece of music and include your own personal opinions. Write a set of instructions for Noah from God about the preparation for the flood and the building of The Ark. Think about all the jobs that Noah had to do before the great flood, and create a clear set of instructions from God. Create an illustration showing a scene from the story of Noah’s Ark. Your picture must try and capture the power and deep meaning of this event from the Bible. Add an appropriate caption to summarise your illustration or even a quote from the Bible. Using your knowedge and skills from Autumn term, create a classification key that enables you to identify a range of river creatures. Remember the keys works with a series of yes/no questions regrarding the observable features of the creatures. Research the man-made feature of Dams. What is a dam and how does it work? Are there any famous dams in the world? Consider whether a dam is actually a good thing and explain your reasoning. Create a piece of art (painting, sculpture, sketch, cartoon, collage, model, graphic poster) based on the words Climate Change. You can interpret this in any way you decide, and be as creative as possible!
