David McNeil Gerry McNeil was the number one goaltender for the Montreal Canadiens hockey team from 1950 to 1954 and won two Stanley Cups with the club. This book discusses his career, wedged as it was, between two Hall of Famers – Bill Durnan and Jacques Plante. From his entry into hockey as a teenager to his incredible performance of over 218 minutes of shut out play against the Detroit Red Wings, Gerry McNeil’s is the story of an extraordinary Canadian. As readers follow McNeil’s journey from understudy to mainstay with the Habs, including four consecutive appearances in the Stanley Cup final, they’re also reminded of how different the game was for fans and players then. This book will appeal to any fan of the NHL’s “Original Six Golden Era” with its look back at a time when hockey was considered “pure” and only captured “in the moment” before technology gave us endless “instant replays”. Imagine - only a radio broadcast, a newspaper story and a few professional photographs. Fans came to see Richard battle Howe. Fans saw the overtime Leaf goal by Barilko on McNeil. Fans knew the name of every player because there were only six teams and trades were rare. This is a slice in time from the “Original Six” era when players travelled by train and fans wore suits and dresses. The Montreal Habs have one of the strongest fan bases in the NHL and any book related to the Habs is considered to have a built in audience that spans the country. Written by a son who lived the achievements of the Habs through his father’s first-hand accounts, David McNeil’s book offers an insider’s view of what it was like to play with The Rocket, Elmer Lach, Dickie Moore and against many legendary players of the 50’s such as Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay. About the author: David McNeil is the son of Gerry McNeil. Like his father, David was born in Quebec City and now lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia where he is a Professor of English at Dalhousie University. He teaches among other topics Sports Literature and Culture: Hockey. He is the author of published articles on hockey literature and hockey in general. A cultural critique, a meditation on the art and iconography of sports photography, and also a son’s memoir of his hockey-playing father, it is at once scholarly and moving. You may know the name Gerry McNeil, Montreal Canadiens’ goaltender, Stanley Cup winner, and supporting player on some of the greatest teams ever assembled, but after reading this you will come to fully appreciate him, and his hockey-playing kin, who are so much a part of the fabric of our national game. — Stephen Brunt, Sportsnet • Launch events and local media in •Montreal •Quebec City •Halifax • Review copies to national and regional print and electronic media. • Review copies to hockey commentators and sports bloggers • Media TBA 3 FIRST NATIONS HISTORY Available April 2016 Mapping My Way Home A Gitxsan History Neil J. Sterritt Today the adjacent villages of Gitanmaax and Hazelton form one of the most picturesque communities in all of western Canada—a tiny, tourism mecca nestled in Gitxsan territory at the foot of an iconic mountain in the heart of the Skeena watershed. But 150 years ago these neighbouring villages were the economic hub of the north when packers, traders, explorers, miners, surveyors and hundreds of tons of freight passed through from Port Essington on the coast east to the Omineca gold fields, from Quesnel north to Telegraph Creek. Mapping My Way Home traces the journeys of the European explorers and adventurers who came to take advantage of the opportunities that converged at the junction of the Skeena and Bulkley rivers. The author, Gitsxan leader Neil Sterritt, also shares the stories of his people, stories both ancient and recent, to illustrate their resilience when faced with the challenges the newcomers brought. And finally he shares his own journey from the wooden sidewalks of 1940s Hazelton to the world of international mining and back again to the Gitxsan ancestral village of Temlaham where he helped his people fight for what had always been theirs in the ground-breaking Delgamuukw court case. It’s British Columbia history, local history, family history and Gitxsan history. The book also includes a chapter on the history of BC’s land issues and a detailed description of Neil’s involvement in the Delgamuukw court case. 7 x 10, 384 pp, 104 b/w photos & images, maps, glossary, index • Paperback: 978-1-928195-02-3 $29.95 • Cloth: 978-1-928195-01-6 $38.95 Creekstone Press • APRIL 2016 First Nations History MARKETING • Review copies to major media About the author Neil Sterritt was born and raised in Hazelton, British Columbia and later lived with his wife and sons for many years at Temlaham, a Gitxsan ancestral village site. BC. He writes extensively on aboriginal rights and governance and serves as a consultant to many aboriginal organizations around the world. He co-authored the book, Tribal Boundaries in the Nass Watershed (UBC Press 1999). Here, he re-visits a theme first made famous by Joy Kogawa’s classic, Obasan. Although this story is very different, it is from the point of view of two teenagers faced with themes of internment, wartime fears and issues of race, morality and social class a lifetime ago. During World War II, Japanese-Canadians were exiled to the Interior of BC from their homes on the Coast. Such is the fate of Toshiko and her cousin, who land on a farm near a small, hostile town. While in high school, Toshiko discovers that not all residents see them as the enemy. One farm boy in particular from her graduating class is curious about the plight of the Japanese-Canadians and a friendship develops that soon blossoms into a kind of Romeo-and-Juliet romance. When their relationship becomes a scandal, he is thrown out of his house and sets off with Toshiko for Vancouver, where they attempt to establish a life together before the harsh reality of wartime Canada closes in on them.. NEWMAN THE LOST CANADIANS A Struggle for Citizenship Rights, Equality and Identity Don Chapman When Don Chapman was six years old, he was stripped of his Canadian citizenship, thanks to an arcane provision of the Canadian Citizenship Act. Years later, he was stunned to discover the fact, and thus began his David-and-Goliath battle to change Canada’s archaic citizenship laws. He’s since become the voice for 1 million other Lost Canadians, whose ranks include such Canadian icons as Roméo Dallaire, Frank Gehry, and Nobel Prize– winner Willard Boyle. Here, Chapman describes his fight with Ottawa, and the frustrations and rewards of trying to change an immutable system. He renders in heartbreaking detail the stories of Lost Canadians who’ve had their identities torn from them, thanks to labyrinthine legislation, bumbling bureaucracy, and disinterested politicians. Lost Canadians is a revelatory story that could well be the most important public affairs book of the year.
