St. Francis Xavier Catholic Community of Faith Fifth Sunday of Easter May 22, 2011 “To move closer to God in all that we do” Happy 40th Anniversary to our Gym Mass! Fifth Sunday of Easter Pastor’s Page We do not live in a perfect world and we do not live in a perfect Church. It is almost a cliché to say those words but they are true. The question then becomes, how do we deal with life’s imperfections and life’s questions? In today’s 1st reading, we hear about one of the first questions that faced the early Church. How to respond to the needs of the widows of the Greek converts to Christianity? The response of the early Church was faithful and hopeful. “The Twelve called together the community of disciples and said, ‘Select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom whom we shall appoint to this task.’ We have here the institution of the order of deacon, a problem surfaced and it was answered. The way in which we deal with life’s problems indicates the level of our faith and hope. Faith inspires hope and hope is a virtue we always need. In today’s gospel, Jesus offers us great hope. “Do not let our hearts be troubled. You have faith in God, have faith also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places.” This reading is a favorite for people at funerals, but it is also important for us in our daily lives. Jesus stands with us in our lives and our attitude is one of hope as we lead our daily lives with their joys and challenges. Catechetical and Youth Ministries Awards The catechetical documents, Catechesi Tradendae and the General Director for Catechesis (#80) remind us that “The definitive aim of catechesis is to put people not only in touch, but also in communion and intimacy with Jesus Christ.” This goal is achieved by your efforts at promoting knowledge of the faith, liturgical education, moral formation, teaching to pray, educating for community life and missionary activity (cf.GDC, #85-86) Archdiocesan Honorees This award honors those who best exemplify the standards of catechetical and youth ministry excellence advocated by the Office for Catechesis and Youth Ministry. Our own Dr. Patty Jane Pelton was one of the Archdiocesan Honorees. Congratulations, Patty Jane! Fifth Sunday of Easter Fr. Peter’s Reflection Pg 4 The Same Mass BUT different words! Welcoming a new translation of the Roman Missal- History #1 As you perhaps you already know that on November 27, 2011 English speaking countries will start using a new translation of the Roman Missal book which guides our communal worship. Therefore, for the next few months I will focus my bulletin columns on the history of the Missal, the actual changes and the theology which guides it. I pray that my writings will be helpful to you as we all learn the new language of the same sprit- filled liturgical celebrations. For more than 2,000 years, the Church has paid careful attention to how our prayer is composed. After all, we believe, the words of our prayer express the words of our belief, therefore, they are very important. The Roman Missal is the book that contains the words used at mass. In 1969, after the Second Vatican Council ended Pope Paul VI promulgated the first edition of the Roman Missal. A slightly revised second edition appeared in 1975. In the year 2000, Blessed John Paul II promulgated the third edition, which unlike the second one did not contained too many changes but focused on adding a number of new texts for the many saints whom he had canonized. As usual, this liturgical book was released in Latin and then conferences of bishops all over the world began to translate it into various languages. You might ask here who actually is translating this important to all Catholics book? This is the answer; in 1963, the bishops of our country joined 10 other English-speaking countries and formed a group of linguistic scholars called the International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL). They prepared translations for the Missal, the Liturgy of the Hours, and all other sacramental rites. Their work was guided by a special Vatican written document entitled Comme le Prevoit. This guideline of the Holy See permitted translators to use “dynamic equivalence” – not word-for-word translation, but phrasing that better suited the cadence of each vernacular language and that’s what the ICEL had done. But when the third edition of the Roman Missal was released in the year of 2000, it was quickly followed by a new set of the Vatican guidelines for the translators entitled Liturgiam Authentica. This new liturgical guideline required a more literal translation. So after 11 years of hard translating work all English speaking conferences of the Catholic Bishops agreed on the translation which will be introduced to the English speaking Church in the months to come. I hope you will find this process of learning about a new language enjoyable as it creates for all of us a great change of deepening our liturgical awareness and strengthening our personal faith. Thus the Lectionary opens up for us the whole mystery of Christ as we walk each year through the events that are the paschal mystery—His life, ministry, suffering, death, resurrection, ascension, sending of the Spirit. As we might expect, in the first part of the Easter season the Lectionary focuses on Jesus’ resurrection, appearances, and captures for us one part of the meaning of this season,. Now, the Fifth Sunday of Easter, the Lectionary alerts us to the fact that this season is now at a turning point. Rather than a focus on the risen Christ, the Lectionary focuses on Jesus’ instructions and prayer for His disciples—all this clearly with an eye to Pentecost and the celebration of the coming of the Spirit. With the indwelling of the Holy Spirit we are empowered to take up Jesus’ saving mission, to continue His ministry, to be His presence for others. Thus, the last part of the Easter season is teaching us how to be good disciples. Another part of the meaning of this season put forward in the Lectionary selections is that the resurrection is more than a glorious event for Jesus. Jesus’ being raised up from the dead invites us to a new way to be disciples—to have a personal relationship with Him through shared risen life. By our discipleship we already share in Jesus’ risen life, we already share in the fruits of the resurrection. Do you have a family member or friend in the Military (stateside or overseas)? Call the Parish Office and we will put their name on our prayer list. Also, please let us know when your service person comes home so we can remove their name from our list. Fifth Sunday of Easter Happy Anniversary Gym Mass Pg. 6 Greetings: On this 40th Anniversary of the first Saint Francis Xavier Gym Mass, the Parish Council extends warm wishes and thanks to the founders, those who have guided it over the years and current participants for maintaining this vibrant ministry. What started as an interest in building bonds of families with children of similar ages, sharing faith with friends and neighbors, and celebrating a lay-guided liturgy has endured and evolved over the decades to become a welcoming feature for the parish and community. We thank you for extending the gym mass invitation to those with kids who prefer to run a bit free, others who find it easier to navigate a wheelchair on the wooden floor, some who prefer not to kneel, musicians and vocalists seeking more contemporary sounds, lectors who prevail in a resonant room and families who find the time convenient after Sunday school classes. We express our appreciation for the many priests who have ministered to the worshipers along with those who have created a welcoming atmosphere through the years with coffee, juice and cookies that have become a sign of hospitality and warmth of the worshiping community. The care you extend to one another and the SFX community as a whole is a concrete expression of your faith. As we celebrate your 40th year with you, we recognize those whose dedication and generosity have provided a unique worshiping opportunity and dimension to the Saint Francis Xavier faith community. Best wishes in the years ahead for more generations to enjoy the special environment that the gym mass and its participants provide. We ask the Spirit to bless the community as it moves forward. This is a cause supported by the 10:15 Gym Mass. Trees That Feed Foundation Feeding People, Benefiting the Environment Our mutual friend, Mary McLaughlin, has recently returned from Jamaica where she oversaw the planting of two thousand breadfruit trees by the Trees That Feed Foundation (TTFF) in its mission to fight hunger in developing nations. Mary first conceived the idea of such a project in 2008. She set up a non-profit organization and since then has worked tirelessly to see her dream become a reality. The foundation’s goal is to plant trees that produce edible fruit in tropical areas to feed hungry people, while benefiting the environment. The breadfruit is a highly nutritious food containing carbohydrates, protein, and other nutrients. In addition to farms, the trees are being planted around schools, orphanages, and homes. The Trees That Feed Foundation is becoming recognized nationally, inter-nationally, and locally. Last month The Chicago Flower and Garden Show donated two booths to TTFF to create awareness of this creative endeavor. Many of Mary’s friends, relatives and members of our Faith Alive community volunteered their time at the Flower Show to share their knowledge about Trees That Feed. Within two to three years the trees will begin to bear fru8it. Each tree will eventually yield about 200 fruit each year and live for about 50 years. Visitors to the Flower Show were invited to contribute $15.00 to sponsor the planting of a breadfruit tree...these were gifts that will keep on giving, well past the person’s life time. Please Read Carefully! Due to intensified national privacy concerns at hospitals and medical facilities, it has become increasingly difficult for our Priests and Ministers of Care to provide communion calls and pastoral visits to our parishioners that are hospitalized locally. You are very important to the pastoral staff at St. Francis. To assist us in providing quality care to those in need please note the following information. The patient or family must take the initiative to have spiritual needs met. If you would like to be anointed prior to a planned hospital visit, please call the parish office in advance, or request an anointing as instructed in our Sunday bulletin following the liturgy. Anointing can also be requested in the hospital. When you are being admitted to the hospital it is critical that you or a loved one identifies your religious affiliation, including the name of the parish. Either you or a loved one should indicate you are requesting Catholic Pastoral Care from those available in the hospital to provide this care. The patient or family can also contact the parish or the Pastoral Care Office for spiritual support at the hospital during their hospital stay.
