In phonics, it has been claimed that about 80% of the pronunciation of English consonants and vowels is predictable based on their
distribution in the syllable, the occurrence of stress, and their neighboring sounds. Phonics knowledge refers to knowledge about
letter-sound relationships, used particularly in beginning reading instruction to help readers decode unknown words in text. In Taiwan,
the Education Innovation Council suggested that beginning 2001, English education adopt phonics instruction at the fifth and sixth
grades in primary school level. Apply your phonics knowledge and use K. K. phonetic symbols to transcribe the following nonwords.

III. Teaching English As A Foreign Language (30%)
1) Since the teaching materials for both Taiwan’s junior and senior high school English classes have been open for free marketing,
it is a lot easier for English teachers to choose whatever materials they want to use. However, things might not work out. What
impact does this policy cast upon English teachers’ uses of teaching materials and methods in the classroom? (15%)
2) In Taiwan’s English classrooms at all levels, the Communicative Approach to English teaching has been employed for quite
sometime. However, researchers complained that it cannot cultivate students who can communicate freely. Why is it so? Name
at least five reasons and elaborate them as long as you can. (15%)
